BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Lenovo Group, China's largest PC maker, said it aims to become the world's second-largest PC provider by the end of this year, China Daily reported Friday. The PC maker will take aggressive action to expand in the international PC market left by its competitors because of strategy adjustment, the English newspaper quoted Liu Chuanzhi, the board chairman of Lenovo, as saying.A few weeks ago, the world's biggest PC maker Hewlett-Packard Corp. said it will spin off its PC sector. Apple Inc's former CEO Steve Jobs resigned."The Chinese market is the starting point for Lenovo, but it won't be the only place Lenovo should put emphasis on. We will set up a more active strategy for expanding in overseas markets," Liu said. The PC maker has long been focusing on the global market. It purchased the PC division of the IBM Corp. a few years ago. In January, it announced a 175-million-U.S.-dollar joint venture with Japan's NEC Corp. In July, Lenovo completed its acquisition of Medion AG, a German multimedia and consumer electronics maker.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Middle-aged women who wolf down their meals are much more likely to be overweight or obese than women who eat slower, New Zealand research has found. In what they claimed to be the first such nationwide study anywhere, Otago University researchers analyzed the relationship between self-reported speed of eating and body mass index (BMI) in more than 1,500 New Zealand women aged 40 to 50, an age group known to be at high risk of weight gain. The study by the university's department of human nutrition could lead to new and more successful methods of treating obesity, say the researchers.Study principal investigator Dr Caroline Horwath said that after adjusting for factors such as age, ethnicity, smoking, physical activity and menopause status, the researchers found that the faster women reported eating, the higher their BMI.Results from the two-year follow-up were expected to be published next year, and if analysis confirmed a causal relationship, the researchers would test interventions that focused on encouraging women to eat more slowly.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have been making great efforts to show how harmful coffee is to us, though no evidence yet. A latest study may be reassuring for coffee-lovers.Women who drink caffeinated coffee are less likely to be depressed than those don't. And the more they drink, the lower risk of developing depression, according to a study published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers of the study tracked the health of over 50,000 women aged between 30 and 55 in 1996 for a decade and recorded their mental health and coffee intake periodically. They find that women who drank two or three cups of coffee per day were 15 percent less likely than those who drank little or decaffeinated coffee to be depressed. And for those who drank four or more cups, the risk of developing depression reduced by 20 percent. The reason why coffee could protect depression is not clear. But the scientists from the Harvard University speculated that caffeine was the key player. More research is needed to show whether caffeine can ward off depression. It might be that not-depressed people tended to be more activated and the habit of coffee drinking just fit in their lifestyle. However, the depressed ones, who might suffer from sleeplessness, chose not to drink coffee because the caffeine might exacerbate it."There's no need to start drinking coffee," said Dr. Alberto Ascherio, the senior author of the study, "The message is that coffee is safe to drink, with no adverse effects. That's really all that can be said."

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Eating a low-carbohydrate, high- protein diet may reduce the risk of cancer and slow the growth of tumors already present, according to a study published Tuesday in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. The study was conducted in mice, but the scientists involved agree that the strong biological findings are definitive enough that an effect in humans can be considered."This shows that something as simple as a change in diet can have an impact on cancer risk," said lead researcher Gerald Krystal, a scientist at the British Columbia Cancer Research Center.Krystal and his colleagues implanted various strains of mice with human tumor cells or with mouse tumor cells and assigned them to one of two diets. The first diet, a typical Western diet, contained about 55 percent carbohydrate, 23 percent protein and 22 percent fat. The second, which is somewhat like a South Beach diet but higher in protein, contained 15 percent carbohydrate, 58 percent protein and 26 percent fat. They found that the tumor cells grew consistently slower on the second diet.As well, mice genetically predisposed to breast cancer were put on these two diets and almost half of them on the Western diet developed breast cancer within their first year of life while none on the low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet did. Interestingly, only one on the Western diet reached a normal life span ( approximately 2 years), with 70 percent of them dying from cancer while only 30 percent of those on the low-carbohydrate diet developed cancer and more than half these mice reached or exceeded their normal life span.Krystal and colleagues also tested the effect of an mTOR inhibitor, which inhibits cell growth, and a COX-2 inhibitor, which reduces inflammation, on tumor development, and found these agents had an additive effect in the mice fed the low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet. When asked to speculate on the biological mechanism, Krystal said that tumor cells, unlike normal cells, need significantly more glucose to grow and thrive. Restricting carbohydrate intake can significantly limit blood glucose and insulin, a hormone that has been shown in many independent studies to promote tumor growth in both humans and mice.Furthermore, a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet has the potential to both boost the ability of the immune system to kill cancer cells and prevent obesity, which leads to chronic inflammation and cancer.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Facebook announced Thursday that Netflix CEO and Chairman Reed Hastings has joined the social network company's board of directors.Hastings, who successfully managed Netflix through an IPO in 2002, is expected to provide useful guidance for Facebook which plans to go public. As the most popular subscription-based movie and television show rental service in the United States, Netflix could also help Facebook figure out how to enter the business of music streaming and movies, which, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the eG8 Forum held in Paris last month, would be Facebook's next focus. The Facebook board seat could also help Netflix to catch up with the social evolution of the Internet with its 23.6 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada."Reed is an entrepreneur and technologist who has led Netflix to transform the way people watch movies and TV," said Zuckerberg in a statement. "He has built a culture of continuous rapid innovation, something we share and work hard to build every day.""Facebook is propelling a fundamental change in how people connect with each other and share all kinds of content," said Hastings. "I'm looking forward to working with Mark and the rest of the board to help Facebook take advantage of all the opportunities ahead."
