SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak. This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation. The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said. But the cost is now coming under scrutiny. From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit. The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million. Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely. The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied. In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. The statement added comparing hotel rate does not account for the full cost of supportive services it provides at the shelter. 2064

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered Monday afternoon in a small town south of Portland for a pro-President Donald Trump vehicle rally. It comes just over a week after a member of a far-right group was fatally shot after a Trump caravan went through downtown Portland. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported vehicles waving flags for Trump, the QAnon conspiracy theory, and in support of police gathered at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The rally's organizers said they did not plan to enter Multnomah County, where Portland is located. Oregon City is about 20 miles south of Portland. 614

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former investigator with the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced today to more than a decade in federal prison for taking drug money seized during his work as a federal agent, then laundering the funds that he used for personal expenses.Tyrone Cedric Duren, 50, who pleaded guilty to nearly 20 federal counts last year, was sentenced to 130 months in custody, plus three years of supervised release.U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered the forfeiture of Duren's Bonsall home, a 5,000 money judgment and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Duren was assigned to a bulk cash smuggling task force and, as part of his work, would investigate suspected drug traffickers transporting cash. After seizing money during those investigations, he would deliberately fail to report the cash and used the money for his and his families' own personal expenditures, including real estate and international travel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Over the course of several years, Duren also placed GPS trackers on vehicles used to move drug proceeds, prosecutors said.Prosecutors cited an example from 2014, in which Duren tracked a vehicle heading toward Mexico, which was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint. After Duren seized cash found hidden in laundry detergent boxes in the vehicle, he took more than 0,000 for himself, which was later deposited into business and personal accounts to conceal those thefts,'' the U.S. Attorney's Office said.In addition, prosecutors say he didn't file taxes in 2013 to hide stolen funds and lied ``numerous times'' to investigating agents. 1675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt. The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said. The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging. The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821
