BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's railways carried 60.75 million passengers nationwide around the seven days of National Day holidays and one day of Mid-Autumn Festival, the Ministry of Railways said on Friday. The figure was 2.18 million more or 3.7 percent up from the same period last year, according to the ministry. The peak transport season lasted for eleven days from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday. State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit. Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations. Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office. The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said. A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo. He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties. Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China. Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour. "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi. "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said.
BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) - A Chinese official vows on Thursday to curb the country's production overcapacity and avoid repetitious construction of projects that are less environmental-friendly. The move is part of the country's efforts to promote energy conservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Wan Bentai, chief engineer with the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), said on half of MEP minister Zhou Shengxian. "Today's projects should never become the target of tomorrow's environment control program." He said in a speech delivered at the fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development. The development and industrialization of green economy faces an important opportunity as the country has spent a large share of its 4 trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollar) stimulus package on energy conservation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects, he said. He called for strengthened environment assessment measures on enterprises and optimizing the structure of key sectors such as the steel and auto industries. The environmental problems brought about by China's sweeping urbanization, such as garbage and waste water disposal, should be seriously dealt with, he said, while stressing the importance of addressing issues in the rural areas such as water resources contamination, land pollution, garbage disposal and fertilization-caused pollution. He also pledged that the government will intensify efforts in fostering creative and highly-efficient green technologies and encourage a green consumption model for both urban and rural dwellers. A change to people's consumption habits, such as eating less meat, is conducive to environmental protection and greenhouse gas emission reduction, said Khalid Malik, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in China, in the forum. HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China displayed a scale model of its jetliner C919,the country's first home-grown large commercial airliner, for the first time at the Asian Aerospace '09 on Tuesday. With a scale of one to ten, the model was so far "the most precise one put up for public display," said Guo Bozhi, president of the Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, a unit of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC. The mockup was displayed at a prominent position at the Asian Aerospace, Asia's leading air show, side by side with industry giants like Boeing and Airbus. Together with some ten other Chinese mainland-based manufacturers, suppliers and service providers at the show, it attracted attention of media from around the world. It was intended as a single-aisle airliner to target the short and medium haul markets in eight to ten years from now, Wang said. If successful, COMAC plans to produce 50 C919 aircraft each year at the early stage and annual production could reach 100 or even more at a later stage, depending on how it is received by the market, Guo said. BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, issued a new regulation Wednesday targeting prevention and remedies for marine pollution caused by ships. The regulation, which includes nine sections and 78 rules, said transportation departments under the Cabinet should compile emergency plans to deal with pollution caused by ships or related activities. Once the plans are completed and have been approved by the Cabinet, coastal governments above city level should map out emergency plans based on one proved by the State Council. China's transport departments and governments above city level have also been asked to establish emergency mechanisms and plans to prevent and deal with marine pollution. Marine management institutions should cooperate with other departments to improve monitoring and supervision over the activity of ships and pollution caused by them Professional teams to deal with emergencies, specialized equipment and facilities should be organized, according to the regulation. Anyone who is responsible for marine pollution should make efforts to eliminate the pollution hazard and make compensation. The regulation will take effect on March 1, 2010. Official statistics say 733 ship pollution accidents occurred between 1998 to 2008 in sea areas in China's jurisdiction, which led to huge economic and environmental losses. The regulations will apply to every type of shipping, except military.
