LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. The parents only found out after their 7-year-old was complaining of back pain after school and they asked why she was in so much pain.This is an excerpt from a letter written to Scripps station WFTS in Tampa from the student’s Aunt, Kiara Francisco: 1026

LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - For the first time, a member of the drill team at Lincoln High School recalls the moments she was called the N-word at Friday night's football game in San Clemente. Lillian Mixon is a sophomore at Lincoln High School and she tells 10News, "A group of us were walking to the bathroom during halftime and a little boy asked me if I do flag or twirl, and I told him no, I dance, I do drill, and he responded with the N-word." Mixon says it happened again on her way back from the restroom, "I was confused and I was like did she say the N-word to me because this is a grown woman." Immediately, Mixon says, she told two security guards at the game about what happened, "I told the security guard that they were saying racial things to us and the guy looked at me and didn’t respond he just looked and turned away." Meanwhile, Orange County Sheriffs Department released a statement on social media that reads in part, "At the game an individual told deputies that the San Clemente Middle School students were on the visitor side being rowdy and obnoxious and deputies removed them from the area." They went on to say there was no mention of inappropriate language or hate speech. After the game, following normal protocal, Lincoln High athletes and coaches were escorted back to their buses. Mixon says when she got back to the bus she felt awful, "I felt awful after the game and I had to keep it together. After the game I told myself things like this happen but they never happen to me." Both school districts are continuing their investigation into the allegations. 1598

LAS VEGAS — Internet juggernaut Amazon is flourishing during the COVID-19 pandemic as people turn to online shopping for supplies. But, Nevada authorities are investigating the company after insiders say employees are getting sick and management is slow with revealing details.In a massive, 2.4 million square foot facility near Sloan and Tropical Parkway in Las Vegas, hundreds of Amazon employees file in and help the behemoth internet company deliver everything from above ground swimming pools to toothbrushes.In a public relations videoes, Amazon has touted the steps the company is taking to combat the spread of COVID-19. The precautions include employee temperature checks, mandatory mask-wearing, routine building cleaning, and social distancing for employees.But several Amazon employees are speaking out about their safety."Some people aren't even following [those precautions], and furthermore, in the break room, there's a lot of people, and it's hard for us not to come into contact with each other because we are right next to each other," said one insider who spoke on a condition of anonymity.The same insider fears retaliation for revealing details.She believes the company, which brought in about 0 billion in 2019, has been slow to reveal new cases of COVID-19 among Amazon employees."We were concerned already because we are in a warehouse, and there are so many people and we don't know where [the new cases] are coming from or who has [COVID-19]," she said.The trouble started in March when word began to spread among employees of possible illness. At the time, the company allowed for unlimited, unpaid time off for employees.The insider says management otherwise downplayed the presence of the illness among employees."Pretty much don't worry about it, and they told us it wasn't in our warehouse, it was in another, and it's all just a rumor," she said.But as weeks went by, the company acknowledged cases among employees.An Amazon spokesperson confirmed a case at a "North Las Vegas facility" on April 24.The company operates several large warehouses scattered around Southern Nevada, and insiders say concerns spread even more among employees about the exact location of the confirmed case.In fact, an internal email revealed that the company's public relations team deemed local news reports about the situation as "inaccurate," adding the positive case was at a facility internally dubbed "LAS 2" and at the time, no reported cases at the facility named "LAS 7."The email instructed employees to disregard news stories, and management would "hopefully report new cases before it hits the news.""When we had the second confirmed case, there was one person in management — I'm not sure of his position — but they had made a comment that, 'Well, by now you all should be immune to it. If you've been exposed to it, so you have nothing to worry about," the Amazon insider said.The situation went downhill, according to the Amazon insider.In an internal communication sent on May 5, Amazon revealed that an employee at the "LAS 7" facility had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 30. The email said that the employee was present at the facility for several weeks prior to testing positive.The company told employees the facility had been "deep cleaned" in accordance with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines."It's hard to say you are sanitizing the place, which is not sanitized, by using it every day, the whole time we're there," the Amazon insider said. "Close it down for two days since you hired so many people or allow those who are sick not to feel threatened with their jobs if they need to take off."The insider says the company eliminated the unlimited time off for employees despite a rise in the number of reported cases among Amazon employees.Internal communications later revealed new reported cases at the LAS 7 facility on:May 11May 13May 15May 18May 22June 1June 5June 10June 15June 24July 15 (multiple individuals)July 18 (multiple individuals)July 21 (multiple individuals)The email to employees indicated the company was unable to reveal who had tested positive, citing privacy concerns."We work very hard for these people," the Amazon insider said. Our top concern is ensuring the health and safety of our employees, and we invested approximately billion from April to June on COVID-related initiatives to get products to customers and keep employees safe," Lisa Guinn, an Amazon spokesperson, said. "This includes spending more than 0 million in the first half of the year on COVID-19 safety measures, with investments in personal protective equipment, enhanced cleaning of our facilities, less efficient process paths that better allow for effective social distancing, higher wages for hourly teams, and developing our own COVID-19 testing capabilities."Authorities with the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration have revealed that there are multiple, active investigations into local Amazon warehouses. LIPAN, Texas – A man in Texas is dead after a possible mountain lion attack and officials are warning nearby residents to keep young children inside at night as they search for the animal.Around 3:30 p.m. last Thursday, deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 15000 block of Howell Rd. in Lipan in reference to a missing person call.Deputies were told Christopher Allen Whiteley, 28, was missing and last seen on Wednesday, in the early morning hours.Deputies checked a wooded area nearby and eventually found Whiteley deceased, the sheriff's office said.Preliminary findings show Whiteley died from a wild animal attack, possibly a mountain lion.The sheriff’s office has contacted a governmental trapper with the USDA, who specializes in tracking and removing mountain lions. Officers said they'll work with the trapper and Texas game wardens to locate the animal.The sheriff's office urged the Lipan community to be mindful of their surrounding and to keep their young children and animals inside at night.“The safety of Hood County citizens are my priority one, but please don’t interfere with the process of locating the animal and stay clear of the area being actively worked by officials," said Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds.Whiteley’s body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.This story was originally published by Thalia Brionez at KXXV. 1415

  

LEE COUNTY, Fla., — Your child gives it their all, both time and effort, yet struggles to complete a homework assignment.Another child scribbles their name on a piece of paper and turns it in.Technically, both students could get the same grade according to an investigation by Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida that’s uncovering the tactics teachers and administrators are using to boost low grades.WFTX's Tony Sadiku obtained emails from a Harns Marsh Middle School assistant principal to teachers asking for everyone’s commitment to follow the school’s grading policy, '50% minimum, 0 = 50' in a practice known as minimum grading.Teachers say students who would otherwise get a zero are given between a 50 to 59 percent regardless of whether they prove they’ve learned anything. If a student doesn’t turn in a single assignment all quarter, they’ve earned a 50% at some schools. The principal at Harns Marsh told teachers in 2016 via email, “A 60 for our students that are trying but are several grade levels behind academically is fair.”Some parents said they disagree.  “I don’t believe it’s fair, by no means,” said one parent of a 7th grader at the school.Several parents said they've never heard of minimum grading.  Even some Lee County School Board members said they were unaware of the school’s grading practice.  “I know of no such policy, formal or informal, in Lee County schools,” said Board Member Cathleen Morgan.“I am not aware of such a policy,” said Board Member Dr. Jane Kuckel. “I think every parent needs to be aware of the grading policy,” said Mark Castellano, a former Lee County public school teacher. The Lee County School District said minimum grading is not a District policy, but a practice implemented by some schools and teachers to encourage struggling students. “Often times a zero can completely deteriorate a grade and they will lose interest because they think there’s no way for them to get a passing grade,”  said Dr. Wanda Creel, the District’s Chief Academic Officer. “When students will grasp those concepts is really is on a personalized individualized basis. Minimum grading allows students to stay engaged while still learning and for teachers to continue to work with them through the process.”Creel said the goal is for students to pass on their own.But does a better grade on a report card mean students are actually learning?While students may have a better shot at passing their classes because of minimum grading, numbers from the Florida Department of Education show many still aren’t testing well.At Harns Marsh Middle school, 38 percent passed the English Language Arts Florida Standards Assessment test in 2017. In the entire District, 53 percent of middle schoolers passed.Harns Marsh kids also had lower numbers in the FSA Mathematics Test. Only 35 percent of kids passed last year compared to 51 percent of middle schoolers in the District who passed.Middle school students who don’t pass are still promoted to the next grade level, but may be more likely to struggle down the road.Statistically, 8th graders are more likely to be retained than 6th and 7th graders according to the Florida Department of Education.“Teachers will begin to think that I need to retain because this child doesn’t seem to be able to tackle the issues in high school,” Creel said. “A retained 8th grader can be one of the highest indicators of a dropout. We are finding strategies to help our overaged 8th graders to get the credits they need so they can move on to high school.”“You have kids that are absolutely motivated and they love learning. Those kids you rarely have to do anything. Then you have kids that struggle. They struggle with their home life. They struggle with their socioeconomic situations,” Castellano said.But is adjusting a student’s grade closer to passing the solution?“What are we teaching kids in terms of their personal responsibility for their education?” Castellano said.Castellans says in his nearly 30+ years of teaching, not once has he used the practice. “What they’re saying is for those kids the grade is irrelevant, it’s not going to motivate them,” said Robert Kenny, a professor of education at Florida Gulf Coast University. School Board Member Jane Kuckel supports minimum grading policies at some schools.“All students learn and thrive in different ways," she said. "The outcomes are non-negotiable. The process for getting there needs to be tailored to the achievement levels and learning styles of the students.”One parent argues her child earning the grade matters more.“It’s a big deal cause he needs to learn and he needs to make it in this world," the parent said. "The world is not going to give him a free pass forever and they don’t need to learn that in middle school.” The District said they plan to set up committees next fall to evaluate how minimum grading is being done to come up with a more uniform approach across the District.  5113
