DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- "When difficult things happen, artists really feel the need to give a voice to what's going on," described mother of two, Deana Lederman. Lederman always turned to paintbrushes and a canvas when things got tough. "I have been drawing and writing since I was really little."She turned her passion into profit when she became a published cartoonist, but she always had an eye for writing and books."I've always written stories and I've always wanted to get it out there, and this is kind of an interesting time to get this out there because there are a lot of families who are having a really hard time," Lederman described. She pivoted from human to something more serious and recently published a series of children's books about COVID-19."I have a friend who has two little boys in Brooklyn, New York and she shared photos of the rainbows in the windows. That seemed like a logical storyline for the silver lining and sense of connection we have during the fact we're all isolated." It inspired her first book titled 'Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story'. After that, came 'Masks'."It's about a mom who sews masks for essential workers and I think everyone's been thinking about that and seeing all the work everyone's been doing," Lederman said. Her book was recently published by TBR, a non-profit organization that supported multilingual children's books. Lederman's books were published in spanish, japanese and hebrew to name a few."It's really wonderful to be able to have these stories in my first picture books published in many languages so we can connect people during this time from all over." 1629

DEL MAR (CNS) - Horse racing at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has been canceled Thanksgiving Day due to stormy weather forecasts, racing officials announced Sunday. ``With inclement weather predicted to bring substantial rain on Wednesday and Thursday of the coming week, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club proactively canceled its scheduled Thanksgiving Day race card as part of its continuing emphasis on horse and rider safety,'' the club said on Twitter Sunday. Several of the races from Thursday's program, including the 0,000 Grade III Red Carpet Stakes, will be shifted to expanded race cards Saturday and next Sunday. Friday's scheduled feature race, the 0,000 Grade II Hollywood Turf Cup, will be run Sunday. ``The weatherman is making it tough, but safety always comes first,'' said Del Mar's Executive Vice President for Racing Tom Robbins. First post next weekend will be moved up to noon, and 10 races will be run each day. Grass racing will be emphasized. DENVER, Colo. – A group of entrepreneurs is launching a new app that directs users to Black-owned businesses.“The app is across all 50 states. We just got a notification today about a Black-owned business in Ireland,” said Mariam Kazadi, the co-founder of the BBLK app.The app uses GPS to find Black-owned businesses near you. Or you can search through businesses that allow you to order online. It is organized by the type of service. As communities push for racial justice, there has been growing momentum to support Black-owned businesses. Yelp saw searches for “Black-owned business” spike 6,000% between June and August.Companies rarely identify themselves through Google searches as being minority-owned, which can make it difficult for consumers to find them.“Black-owned businesses not only don’t get visibility, but they don’t get funding. So, we want to put the Black dollar back into the community so those economies and communities can grow,” Kazadi said. The BBLK app is free for users and businesses. The app is running through donations. The founders hope the app helps make the buying Black trend a more permanent part of the American consumer experience.“Make every Friday a Black Friday, and that is a push to have people support these businesses at least once a week,” co-founder Ramond Murphy said. The BBLK app goes live Friday, Sept. 4.This story was first reported by Jessica Porter at KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 1438

Despite a ruling from the Michigan Supreme Court that struck down several emergency COVID-19 orders by the state's governor, a statewide mask mandate remains in effect. That's because the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an order of its own, also limiting social gatherings.Three days after Michigan's Supreme Court rules that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer did not have the authority to issue emergency orders to address COVID-19, the state Department of Health and Human Services issued similar orders on Monday."I want to make clear today's order is lawful under the Michigan supreme decision," Michigan state health director Dr. Robert Gordon said. "...we are tired of the virus, but the virus is not tired of us."The order takes effect immediately. At indoor or outdoor gatherings, masks must still be worn.Wearing a mask must still be enforced by businesses and government offices, and schoolsOnly Region 6 — the western part of the state — is exempt.Just as before, the size of indoor gatherings will be limited. Not all Michiganders are embracing the new mandates."More than 539,000 Michigan citizens stood up against an elected governor abusing her power. They're not going to tolerate an un-elected bureaucrat continuing the abuse," said Ron Armstrong, the co-founder of Stand Up Michigan and state co-chair of Unlock MichiganIn the wake of the ruling, Monday night, Whitmer put out a video urging Michiganders to wear a mask and lawmakers to act."The CDC and experts agree these measures are crucial to slow the spread of the virus, to protect our frontline workers and keep our schools and small businesses open," Whitmer said. 1668

Despicable. This is a serious moment in history and it's disgusting you are mocking the dying words of a murdered man. https://t.co/71YqW1KYmB— Martha McSally (@SenMcSallyAZ) June 25, 2020 196
