Imagine knowing you have pancreatic cancer and your doctor is unwilling to tell you how bad it is because they’re uncomfortable.That’s the situation Dr. Ron Naito, a now-retired physician, found himself in this past August.“It’s never an easy task to tell someone they have a terminal illness. How can it be?” Naito says, sitting on a couch in his home in Portland, Oregon. “I mean it brings your own mortality into the picture for one thing.”Naito has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and as a doctor himself, he knows full well what that means. It can mean a person only has months to live.“Of all the major cancers, the one with most dire of all prognoses is probably pancreatic,” Naito explains. “Particularly what I have, which is stage 4. And I don’t think he felt comfortable telling me or discussing it.”Not only was one specialist unwilling to discuss the severity of his illness, but Naito found out about the size of his tumor from a second specialist in a less than optimal way, as well. He overheard the doctor talking to a medical student just outside his open exam room door.“They were walking this way and they said, ‘5 centimeters.’ He told the medical student. Then, they were walking the other way,” he recalls. “And I heard the words, ‘very bad,’ and I knew it was me, obviously. I know that pancreatic cancer if they exceed 3 centimeters, it’s a negative sign.”The doctor never did talk to him face to face about the precise size of his tumor.Naito says he didn’t think it was “very professional,” but even so, he has no anger toward his doctors. Instead he says it highlights how easy it is for a doctor to be careless.“They’re not uncaring. It’s just that they don’t have any experience or training. Nobody’s there to guide them,” Naito says. “And there’s no book on this. I mean you can’t go to the medical school library and check out a book on how can you deliver a dire diagnosis to patients. That book does not exist. I don’t think.”That’s why Naito not only choosing to speak out in the months he has left--despite his weakness--but it’s also why he’s given Oregon Health and Science University’s Center for Ethics in Healthcare a grant so people like Dr. Katie Stowers can teach the next generation how to better deliver news to someone who’s dying.“Unfortunately, Dr. Naito’s experience is not an anomaly,” Stowers says.Stowers is the inaugural “Ronald Naito Director of Serious Illness Education” at OHSU. Medical students under Stowers’ guidance must now pass a unique final exam, delivering grim news in mock scenarios.“It’s not that doctors don’t want to do better. It’s not that doctors are bad or inhumane, it’s that they just haven’t been taught how to do this the right way,” Stowers says.Naito, who has outlived his prognosis but estimates he may only have about six months left, says doing it the right way all comes down to one thing.“When you’re talking to your patient that has terminal illness, you have to realize your doctor and patient roles become a little bit blurred,” he says, fighting back tear. “Because, basically, you’re just two souls. You’re two human beings meeting at a very deep level. You’re in charge with giving this other person the most devastating news they will receive in their lifetime potentially.”It’s a very crucial moment, Naito says. 3314

"Speed dating is a way to meet people face to face in a 6-minute mini-date format," says Michael Clarke, who runs Pre-Dating Speed Dating. Clarke says people dating later in life are frustrated with the apps and the online quest to find love. "Prior to marriage, or when they were younger, they met people face to face,” Clarke says. “This is what their comfort zone is." Jodie Lopes is done swiping right and left on dating apps. "It's really about always putting your best foot forward all the time. I just want to be myself," she says. So, Lopes is participating in this speed dating event that’s for midlife singles only. And this place is packed! Lori Chapman, a divorced mother, is also here, looking for her match. Chapman says online dating scares her and speed dating is more her speed. “I'm old school, and face-to-face is the best," she says. Chapman says the men at speed dates are more genuine than the ones online. "The guys are more on a mission that they are here for a reason,” she says.If you’re a midlife single, both Chapman and Lopes say try speed dating, but do it with an open mind. Organizer Clarke says you’ll never know who you might meet."Most people come to one to two, sometimes three events, just to test the waters see if they meet anybody,” Clarke says. “But I can tell you this, I just had my 68th marriage in the last eight years." 1526

  

It’s been nearly four decades since a Northern Ireland-based start-up car company put a futuristic take on the sports car. With its low profile, sleek, stainless steel body and unmistakable gull-wing doors, DeLorean’s DMC-12 remains one of the most recognizable cars on the planet. “You're going down the road and people are just hanging out their windows taking pictures and videotaping,” explains DMC-12 owner Robert Keslar.Keslar bought his second DeLorean with severe engine damage eight years ago.“There was some fiberglass damage from the fire that occurred,” he said. “So, I did all that myself and then I brought it up here to the shop and they finished it up for me and got it back on the road.”Only one model, in one color, was ever released before the company shutdown production in 1982. Its founder John DeLorean was in legal hot water and the original company was left insolvent.“It was a perfect storm,” said current DeLorean Motor Company Vice President James Espey. “A bad economy, high interest rates and a bad exchange rate on the pound to the dollar.”With just over 9,000 produced, an estimated 6500 remain on the road today.But it was 1985’s "Back to the Future" that electrified audiences, cementing the DeLorean’s place in American pop culture.In the film, an incredulous Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox asks the question: “You built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd responds with this: “The way I look at it, if you’re going to build a time machine you ought to do it with some style.”It’s that style and original design that’s been frozen in time. And the re-imagined DeLorean Motor Company remains on its quest to bring the iconic luxury car into the future. “We still have people who don't know that the company is still in existence,” says Espey. DMC is now headquartered just outside of Houston in Humble, Texas. They specialize in the service and restoration of DeLorean cars. They even hope to one day produce new ones.“When the Delorean factory closed in late ‘82, all the remaining parts got shipped here to the United States,” according to Espey.Their warehouse, now a time-capsule, is lined with original parts manufactured nearly 40 years ago. “About three and a half million altogether,” says Espey. “Nuts Bolts Washers glass interior trim switches stainless steel panels pretty much everything to make a car.”That’s enough parts, potentially to build another 500 cars. But DMC says new production is on hold for now. They are waiting for final federal regulations for a law passed in 2015 that would allow them to produce a low volume of vintage cars that would be exempt from today’s emission standards. “In a perfect world that would lead to an all new DeLorean at some point in the future," says Espey.Fortunately, enthusiasts like Keslar don’t have to wait for the future. “The doors the finish the stainless steel there's just nothing else like it,” says Keslar with a smile. “It’s an absolute blast.”A blast from the past. 3024
