Wreckage from the USS Lexington -- a US aircraft carrier sunk by the Japanese during World War II -- has been discovered 500 miles off the Australian coast by a team of explorers led by billionaire Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder announced on Monday. One of the first US aircraft carriers ever built, the vessel dubbed "Lady Lex" was located at the bottom of the Coral Sea -- nearly two miles below the surface -- by the expedition crew of Research Vessel Petrel on Sunday, Allen said. The Lexington was lost in May 1942 along with 216 of its crew and 35 aircraft during what is considered the first carrier battle in history -- the Battle of the Coral Sea."To pay tribute to the USS Lexington and the brave men that served on her is an honor," Allen said in a statement. "As Americans, all of us owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who served and who continue to serve our country for their courage, persistence and sacrifice."Along with the USS Yorktown, the Lexington and its fleet faced off against three Japanese aircraft carriers and is credited with helping to stop Japan's advances on New Guinea and Australia. The battle occurred just one month before the US Navy "surprised Japanese forces at the Battle of Midway and turned the tide of the war in the Pacific for good," according to Allen."The Battle of the Coral Sea was notable not only for stopping a Japanese advance but because it was the first naval engagement in history where opposing ships never came within sight of each other," read the statement from Allen.US ships were able to rescue more than 2,000 sailors before the Lexington ultimately sank from the damage sustained from a bombardment of Japanese torpedoes."As the son of a survivor of the USS Lexington, I offer my congratulations to Paul Allen and the expedition crew of Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel for locating the "Lady Lex," sunk nearly 76 years ago at the Battle of Coral Sea," Navy Adm. Harry B. Harris of US Pacific Command said Monday in a statement."We honor the valor and sacrifice of the 'Lady Lex's' sailors -- all those Americans who fought in World War II -- by continuing to secure the freedoms they won for all of us," he said. 2190

With over 160 vaccines in development, the race to defeat COVID-19 continues.A California company hopes to deliver its vaccine to your mailbox; one that is pain-free and doesn't require a needle and syringe."One of the things I wanted to do was make vaccines more patient-friendly, so they don't hurt and you're not afraid to take them," said Dr. Dan Henderson, a virologist and the CEO of Verndari, Inc.The biopharmaceutical company is based in Napa, California. Dr. Henderson originally came to the wine country to retire but stepped back into the lab during the Ebola crisis. He says some adults avoid vaccines because of a fear of needles, so Verndari set out to do something different. They created the VaxiPatch, a single-dose vaccination kit that uses a dermal patch with a metal microneedle array to deliver vaccines. Once applied, the person wears the patch like a Band-Aid for five minutes. The vaccine uses the COVID-19 "spike" protein that enables the virus to infect human cells and works to enhance a person's immune person.Unlike traditional vaccines, the patch doesn't need to be refrigerated, which Henderson says would make it easier and cheaper to send to developing countries. The company initially set out to make a flu vaccine but switched gears during the pandemic; they continue to adapt to the world's changing needs. "Now, for the First World, it's a shelter-in-place vaccine," said Henderson. They're working with the FDA to see if it could be mailed to your home. The vaccine would leave a temporary blue mark so the patient could take a photo and send it to their health care provider as proof of vaccination. In collaboration with the UC Davis, they've begun clinical trials in animals. Dr. Henderson says so far the results are promising.Other researchers are also working on getting a patch like this on people's arms.Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have created a fingertip-sized skin patch that is also showing promising results in animal testing. Verndari hopes to test its vaccine in humans in the fall, and if all goes well, it could be made available to the public early next year. Dr. Henderson believes they could manufacture about 20 million doses a month. "It would mean a lot because it's important to me to make a contribution and a contribution like that, to me, is priceless." 2408

YORBA LINDA (CNS) - A 40-year-old Long Beach woman is being held on possible charges including attempted murder after allegedly driving her car into a group of Black Lives Matter protesters and counter demonstrators in Yorba Linda. The BLM protest against police violence and systemic racism began at 2 p.m. Saturday on Imperial Highway and was interrupted by a much larger group of President Donald Trump supporters, who waved American flags and held pro-Trump signs. The Orange County Sheriff's Department declared the demonstration an unlawful assembly at 2:40 p.m. and ordered everyone to leave the area, Sgt. Dennis Breckner said.Tatiana Turner, a protester believed to be associated with the "Caravan of Justice" -- a car-based protest in solidarity with BLM -- was exiting the Yorba Linda Public Library parking lot when she allegedly drove her compact car through an intersection and struck a man and woman, according to OCSD PIO Carrie Braun."The man suffered two broken legs and the woman had major injuries," Breckner said. "Both were transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries."Breckner initially identified the male victim as a BLM demonstrator, but Braun said the department is no longer sure if that was the case, saying he might have been a counter-protester.Turner was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, Braun said. She was being held on million bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, according to Orange County jail records.Jason Mancuso, 46, of Anaheim, was arrested and jailed for refusing to leave after the unlawful assembly was declared, Braun said. He has a scheduled court date on Oct. 26, according to jail records.A total of 250 protesters converged at the scene, Breckner estimated, adding that everyone eventually left and roads were reopened.A 47-year-old Yorba Linda man at the protest, who would only give his name as Mike because he feared Antifa-leaning elements might seek to harm him, told City News Service that he's been getting together with a group of several dozen other locals every other week for patriotic rallies. He claimed he personally saw three Trump supporters injured by the car that was hemmed in and trying to drive away. But he also said the "Make America Great Again" demonstrators had been harassing the woman, causing the panicked look on her face."They started to pound on her car," he said, while clutching a carefully rolled up American flag. "It took damage."Mike told CNS he witnessed one female counter-protester get swept under the vehicle, as well as a male counter-protester who suffered an ankle injury. He said another male counter-protester suffered minor abrasions. The crowd included hundreds of pro-Trump supporters and about 100 to 150 Black Lives Matter demonstrators. 2818

at the General Motors plant in Spring Hill as the United Automobile Workers strike continues. Between 7 and 9 people were arrested, according to Mark Herron, Chairman of UAW's Local Chapter 1853."They weren't aggressive; they were just going ahead and making a point," Herron said. The demonstrators were asked to move by law enforcement, Herron went on to say."At the end of the day, these men and women in uniform don't want you to get hurt," Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles, said. Ogles said he supports the strike but doesn't want to see anyone get hurt.Nearly 50,000 workers nationwide — including 3,300 workers at the Spring Hill plant — went on strike at midnight Monday after contract negotiations broke down between GM and the UAW. Union leaders say GM pulled the plug on healthcare benefits without warning."It was a low blow and unnecessary." Ogles said."Suddenly, when that healthcare was dropped, it put a lot of people in jeopardy." Herron said. "People are waiting on organ transplants. We have pregnant mothers." Herron added three employees needed chemo treatments as of this morning. The three-day strike has already started to affect production in other countries. GM has placed about 1,200 workers on temporary layoff at a Canadian factory that makes pickup trucks. This story was originally published by Caroline Sutton and Lisa Reyes on 1357

With the election coming in a matter of days, Americans are waiting with baited breath as a survey found a majority of people expect the outcome of the election to play a role in their personal finances.According to the Consumer Credit Confidence Survey from Equifax, 69% say the outcome of the election is a significant factor that will impact their future financial decisions. The survey, which was released on Wednesday, came on the same day that the Dow Jones lost more than 900 points. The markets have taken a tumble in recent weeks as coronavirus cases jump throughout the US.The survey did find that more Americans (33%) are optimistic about the economy compared to April (27%)."The pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives," said Beverly Anderson, President of Global Consumer Solutions at Equifax. "It has forced many consumers to closely manage household finances and reprioritize their available cash. Based upon more deliberate financial management, as well as the impact of some of the stimulus and financial relief programs, we see reductions in consumer debt, higher savings rates and better credit health." 1136
