RANCHO SANTA FE (KGTV): As the costs to grow avocado and citrus keep rising, farmers in San Diego are trying a new crop to put a jolt in their business: coffee."We’re excited about the possibilities," says Chuck Badger, who runs R.E. Badger and Sons. He's planted about 5,000 coffee plants across several farms that his business manages."The plants are very happy. They’ve got a lot of cherries on them. So we’re super excited for this summer to pick it."Badger says he heard about the possibilities of coffee from growers in Ventura County. San Diego's coastal climate and soil are similar to other coffee producing regions.The timing couldn't be better. In addition to dealing with the lingering drought, many farmers are getting frustrated with the rising production costs of avocado and citrus trees. They're looking for ways to diversify their crops.Badger says the upfront costs of coffee are a little higher, but the profit margins can be much better. He told 10News that coffee needs about 900 trees planted per acre, while citrus uses only 150.But, if the coffee grades out as a "premium" brand, farmers could net as much as ,000 per acre. Citrus and avocado trees bring in anywhere from ,000 to ,000 an acre, depending on the yield and other market factors.Leaders with the San Diego County Farm Bureau are excited about the potential as well, but caution that coffee is still in an "experimental" phase in the area."Nobody's all in at this point," says Executive Director Eric Larson. He points out that San Diego has around 50,000 acres of total farmland. Larson guesses that coffee makes up less than 20 total acres right now."Folks are seeing if it’s going to work here before they make a future decision to be all in," says LarsonHe says it could be a good crop to plant in conjunction with other established crops, doubling up acreage to increase profits.Badger thinks San Diego could become coffee country, in the same way Napa is known for wine."We want to model it after the whole wine growing template, where people are asking for certain varietals, certain regions, organic," he says. "So those coffee snobs become like those wine snobs and will pay for premium coffee."Badger won't be able to harvest any of his beans until next summer. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The young man found shot to death in a Ramona home was identified by his roommate Monday as a resident of Ukraine.San Diego County Sheriff's deputies got a 911 call reporting Sunday at 8 p.m. reporting shots fired near the home on Wood Rock Lane. They found the victim dead inside.Four people live in the home, including Ben Ledbetter. He said the victim, a 20-year-old man, worked for Ledbetter's mobile detailing business for four years. Ledbetter believes he is being targeted and said someone killed his best friend out of anger."He's 100 percent good.  His heart is strong, his will is strong.  His attitude was positive.  You couldn't kill a better person.  He was the best person you could ever know," Ledbetter said.The victim's name is being withheld until his family can be notified.Deputies shut down the area near the home until 1 p.m. Monday to search for evidence. Ledbetter told 10News that detectives took his phone, truck and clothes as part of the investigation.Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact sheriff’s Homicide Detail at 858-974-2321 or 858-565-5200.   1182

Republicans are reportedly seeking to extend increased unemployment benefits in the next round of COVID-19 stimulus, but at a much lower rate, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post.Both The Times and The Post report that Republican lawmakers are prepared to introduce a stimulus package that would continue increased unemployment insurance, but would reduce weekly aid from 0 a week to 0 a week.The 0 federal payments, put in place by the .2 trillion CARES Act that was passed in March, expired over the weekend.According to both The Times and The Post, the Republican plan would offer the 0 insurance for two months, during which time states would need to develop their own plans that would pay unemployed workers 70% of what they were making prior to the pandemic.Many Republicans argue that the 0 a week payments created an incentive for those unemployed to not work, arguing that many were receiving more in unemployment insurance than they would if working.Democrats favor extending the 0 payments through the end of the year with the HEROES Act — a stimulus package that passed through the House in May. The Senate has not yet taken action on the bill.On Friday, Democrats argued that Republicans needed to work with them quickly in order to get payments to those that need them. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Illinois, argued that the benefits were needed because COVID-19 made it too dangerous for some to work, made others unable to work due to lost jobs, and made childcare more difficult due to the closure of schools.Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee completed a significant step in confirming President Donald Trump's pick for a new Supreme Court justice on Thursday, despite Democrats' attempts to throw up parliamentary roadblocks in an attempt to delay the process.The committee reconvened at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday — four hours earlier than was previously scheduled — and held a vote that sent Barrett's confirmation to the Senate floor. No Democrats were present for the vote, following the promise of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, who said Monday that they intended to "boycott" the vote.Committee rules require that a quorum — or a minimum number of senators from the minority party — be present at the meeting for a vote to take place. Republicans simply changed the committee rules and voted anyway.Schumer tweeted Wednesday that he will force a vote to adjourn the Senate until after the election. That vote will likely fail, given that Republicans control the Senate. He and other top Democrats will hold a press conference later on Thursday.According to The Washington Post, some Democrats placed cardboard cutouts of their constituents who have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act in their seats.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he plans to keep Senators in Washington through the weekend to focus on Barrett's confirmation.
