US Customs and Border Protection closed road and pedestrian bridges on Sunday at the San Ysidro port of entry, one of the largest land border crossings between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico.Groups of Central American migrants have been converging on the Mexican border city for days in their quest to gain entry to the United States. Their presence has drawn Mexican troops, protesters and fiery rhetoric from President Donald Trump and Mexican officials. As crowds amassed at San Ysidro, around 500 migrants overwhelmed federal and local Mexican police blockades and rushed toward the border, said freelance reporter Alfredo Alvarez, who is in the crowd.PHOTOS: Migrants converge on Tijuana-San Diego borderThe crowds were made up of men, women and a lot of children, Alvarez said. With bridge and pedestrian border crossings closed in both directions, the migrants headed for the cargo area where the railroad crosses, Alvarez said. They appeared to get close to the border wall, Alvarez said. He could not see from his position if the migrants had managed to get across the actual border.More demonstrations were planned on Sunday at San Ysidro, the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, according to the US General Services Administration. The planned demonstrations on both sides of the border prompted CBP to deploy extra personnel to the border crossing, the agency said."The additional personnel, which included CBP officers, US Border Patrol agents, and Air and Marine agents, were recently deployed to the San Diego area from various areas around the country in preparation for the potential arrival of the caravan in Tijuana."The mayor of Tijuana said on Sunday that he would not let the migrants' actions damage the city's relationship with its neighbors across the border. Many residents of Tijuana work, study and visit the United States each day, and the border closures affect them, too, Juan Manuel Gastélum said on Twitter on Sunday. The mayor has said previously that the city cannot support the migrants.  2049

Victoria's Secret CEO Jan Singer has resigned amid a sales slump and competition from young companies challenging the brand's grip on the lingerie industry. The Wall Street Journal first reported Singer's departure last week. Victoria's Secret parent company L Brands (LB) made it official during its quarterly earnings release.John Mehas, now the president of Tory Burch, will take over as CEO of Victoria's Secret Lingerie early next year, the company said.Sales at Victoria's Secret stores that have been open for at least a year dropped 6% last quarter. Victoria's Secret has close to 1,000 stores in the United States, many of them tied to struggling malls.Last year, Victoria Secret's same-store sales in North America fell 8% in part because of the company's decision to stop selling swimwear and clothing."Our number one priority is improving performance at Victoria's Secret Lingerie and PINK," said Leslie Wexner, Chairman and CEO of L Brands. "We could not be more excited for [Mehas] to lead Victoria's Secret Lingerie to a new phase of success."Singer took over in 2016 after a stint at Spanx. She worked at Nike (NKE) for more than a decade.Victoria's Secret has been struggling to keep up with changing consumer tastes. Flashy fashion shows, push-up bras and celebrity models aren't drawing people in like they used to. Instead, women are clamoring for more products with a better fit.Online stores like ThirdLove, Lively and True & Co. are using tech and harnessing data to offer custom sizes and new products.Other parts of the L Brands business have been struggling. The company announced in September that it is closing Bendel's website and all 23 of its stores, including the store's iconic Fifth Avenue location in New York, in January 2019 because of sluggish sales.A change in Victoria's Secret leadership may not be enough to convince experts that L Brands is turning itself around."Jan was not the problem," Jefferies analyst Randal Konik wrote last week following rumors of Singer's exit. "The real problem is the VS brand is not resonating with consumers, its pricing power is gone, its market share is under permanent attack, and the business is over-stored." 2198

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) -- The avocado boom in Mexico has pulled parts of the country out of poverty in just 10 years, but the prosperity there turns deadly as money-hungry cartels take hold of the market. While there's brutality below the border, there's a history in the homegrown in San Diego. "San Diego is the biggest producer of avocados in the state of California," said farmer Noel Stehly. 10News took a trip to Stehly Farms in North County where you'll find more than 250 acres of the flourishing fruit. The land has been in Stehly's farm for decades. "Those that buy California, great, but if you want it in November, you want a Haas avocado, its not going to come from California," said Stehly. SPECIAL REPORT: Baja California cartels accelerating extinction of world's smallest whaleThat's where Mexico comes in, filling in the gaps with avocados that can be grown year-round. They're competing with American growers in production and now threatening their workers. "I have a lot of my employees that work here right now in Michoacan," said Stehly. "They’re home for the holiday, they’ll come back over the next couple of weeks and my last words to them are, ‘Just be careful. Just really be careful".Michocan is the heart of the violence, where gangs robbed USDA food inspectors at gunpoint in August. "You hear the stories of what goes on down there," said Stehly. "They live in these pueblos that are in the growing regions that are dangerous. They’re absolutely dangerous."The cartels are at war with themselves while threatening growers and police departments with kidnapping, extortion, and murder. "I just worry about them they’re part of my family." said Stehly. "Most of them were at my wedding and have been here long enough to know every one of my kids. I know every one of their kids; they’re part of the family."WATCH: Drug cartels caught carrying new form of marijuana across borderBut the cartels aren't the only problem. Stehly said the water that feeds his farm is not what it used to be. The water now comes from the Colorado River instead of Northern California. "I don’t have enough well water to irrigate everything on my farm," said Stehly. "The price of water has gone up exponentially. Our water system in the state of California is broken and nobody's gonna fix it."The composition of the water has also changed with high levels of salt killing off his crop. The water issue is causing production on the farm to go down. "I do sell a lot less, I grow a lot less," said Stehly. "It's sad. It’s sad to have drying trees on your property."For this second-generation farmer, it's personal. "This property is special. It’s a labor of love now. It paid a lot of bills," said Stehly. "It's an important part of us. It would be hard to see it go."WATCH: Drug cartels recruiting children as young as 11 for smuggling, officials warnFarmers are battling a water crisis in San Diego while violence rages to the south. "It's gonna be tough to be a farmer anywhere in California," said Stehly. "Whether its avocados, lettuce, alfalfa."He said the best thing you can do is keep your support here in San Diego. "I don’t care if it’s a local craft beer or a farmer," said Stehly. "Support local." 3231
