At least not as much as it has in recent years.Acreage burned through Sunday is down 90% compared to the average over the past five years and down 95% from last year, according to statistics from the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.The stats are good news for a state that has seen terrifyingly destructive and deadly blazes the past two years, but the worst of those fires occurred in the fall.The precipitous drop could be due to the amount of precipitation the state received during a winter of near-record snowfall and cooler-than-average temperatures — so far.Scott McLean, a spokesman for CalFire, said the state hasn't dried out as quickly this year and the temperatures haven't been as consistently hot. In October 2017, fast-moving, wind-driven blazes in Northern California killed 44 people and destroyed thousands of homes.Last year began with less rainfall and a smaller snowpack and the state dried out even faster with more dire the consequences. It was the worst fire year in state history in both acreage and deaths with the Camp Fire in November wiping out the town of Paradise, destroying nearly 15,000 homes and killing 86 people. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - County public health officials said have ordered the continued closure of LA Apparel's manufacturing facilities in South Los Angeles, announcing that more than 300 workers have been confirmed with the coronavirus and four have died.The company's manufacturing complex on 59th Street was originally closed June 27 after inspectors found "flagrant" violations of infection- control protocols and the company "failed to cooperate" with the county's investigation of what were then about 150 total infections.According to the county Department of Public Health, an official order was issued Thursday mandating the "continuous closure" of the facility.Officials with LA Apparel could not be reached for comment Friday when county officials announced the extended closure."The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic," public health director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. "Business owners and operators have a corporate, moral and social responsibility to their employees and their families to provide a safe work environment that adheres to all of the health officer directives -- this responsibility is important, now more than ever, as we continue to fight this deadly virus."Public health officials said Friday three workers from the plant died in early June, and one more died this month. The agency began investigating conditions at the plant on June 19 after being notified by a "concerned health care provider."According to the department, investigators asked the company for a list of all employees so it could be compared with testing results, but the company failed to provide it.In late June, inspectors found violations at the facility of distancing requirements and infection-control protocols, according to the department, noting that the company was using cardboard as a barrier between workers.On July 4, the company sent the department an "incomplete list" of employees, and by then 198 positive cases had been reported. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A third Los Angeles police officer has tested positive for the coronavirus and was exhibiting symptoms inside the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division station for several days this week, according to the department.The officer, who had recently returned from a vacation out of the country, was "coughing and sweating" during roll call in Central Division, which patrols areas that include downtown L.A., two of the officials said.Despite protests from several officers in the station, the affected officer was allowed to work for at least two days this week, according to the Los Angeles Times.The officer was tested for the virus, and a positive result came back Saturday, according to three law enforcement officials. Additional officers who worked with the afflicted patrol officer were expected to be quarantined, officials said.Saturday night, the LAPD reported that it had disinfected all of the officer's work spaces and common areas inside Central Division."We have also identified anyone who may have come into contact with the employee and directed them to contact their healthcare provider for evaluation," the LAPD reported.The department said it also established guidelines for all employees who either exhibit symptoms of the virus or cone in contact with someone who may be infected. No residents are allowed in or out, as part of an effort to keep COVID-19 out of this homeless shelter.“That was a difficult choice for us, but our goal from the beginning was to provide a safe place for homeless men to be fed, sheltered and be COVID-free,” said Joseph Mettimano, president of the Central Union Mission. “And so not allowing new folks come in, that was heartbreaking.”It was heartbreaking but effective.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been no cases of COVID-19 at the shelter. It’s a feat they weren’t sure would be possible at the start of the pandemic.“We started working on this process very early with the same countermeasures that everybody else was doing: handwashing, sanitizing hand railings, all those types of things,” Mettimano said.That also included regular health screenings for residents and staff, all of which combined to create a coronavirus-free zone.“I think we've gotten close. The guys that are here in the facility over the last six months and encouraging one another to try to follow the protocols that the mission has [in] place,” said Jonathan Moncado, a resident at the shelter.While the shelter lockdown hasn’t been ideal for him and the other 100 or so men there, Moncado said there is a sense the sacrifice has been worth it.“We just are thankful to the staff that they've kept us safe for all these months,” he said. “There hasn't been one confirmed case or any deaths.”The same can’t be said everywhere.Across the country, people who are homeless haven’t completely avoided COVID-19.The most recent numbers show 400 of the 12,000 people who are homeless in Seattle tested positive for the virus, with at least two deaths. LONDON — U.K. regulators say people who have a “significant history’’ of allergic reactions shouldn’t receive the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine while they investigate two adverse reactions that occurred on the first day of the country’s mass vaccination program. Stephen Powis, the national medical director for the U.K.'s National Health Service in England said Wednesday that health authorities were acting on a recommendation from the Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. He says the agency has advised, on a precautionary basis, that "people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination."
