A judge has upheld the Virginia governor's ban on all types of weapons at a pro-gun rally planned for next week. Gov. Ralph Northam had announced the ban on Wednesday as he declared a state of emergency over threats of “armed militia groups storming our Capitol." The judge's order Thursday came hours after the FBI announced the arrest of three alleged white supremacists in Maryland. Virginia's solicitor general told Richmond Circuit Court Judge Joi that law enforcement identified "credible evidence" that armed out-of-state groups planned to come to Virginia with the possible intention of participating in a "violent insurrection." The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office.Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers.“We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades.With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control.While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier this week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month.Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and adjacent legislative office building. The law does not prohibit guns from the grounds near the Capitol, which is why Northam signed an executive order for this weekend.The response to gun legislation in Virginia has been swift, prompting an expected protest for this weekend. The summer months are the time to work on big highway construction projects. But once you start digging, you never know what you might uncover. “We have over seven pit houses and similar structures that we’ve identified and are excavating and are trying to get the information we need to interpret the site," said Charles Reed of Alpine Archaeologists. While getting ready to expand highway 550 near Durango, Colorado, a team discovered a site about the size of half a football field. Inside were multiple structures that likely were home to a Native American settlement more than 1,000 years ago. And now, the clock is ticking on this group of archaeologists. They’re trying to recover as much of it as possible before a highway is paved over all of it. “We’ve found some worked bone artifacts, which have been really cool," Reed said. "Some sort of worked bone awls, where they’re punching through leather and sort of stuff like that." Reed is leading the team of archaeologists as they excavate this site on top of the Florida mesa. “We have a lot of roof fall here, you can see the collapsed beams and posts along with the reddish oxidation from burning which is suggesting that they probably ritually closed at the end, like intentionally burned it and pulled it down,” said Reed. These archaeologists are hoping to find out more about who lived in these structures, what they ate, and when they left. And they might be the ancestors of the tribes that live nearby today. The Southern Ute Tribe is just a 20 minute drive away from the dig site. The tribe is a partner in the project, and they’re interested in what’s uncovered. They didn’t want to go on camera, but in a statement, they told us they’re collaborating with state agencies on what they call a highly sensitive project. These types of finds during construction aren’t that unusual. The Society of American Archaeology says last fiscal year more than 27 thousand properties were reviewed for historically significant discoveries. And many of these reviews include input from Native American tribes. The Southern Ute tribe says it wants to ensure that any ancestors recovered from these sites are treated with the utmost respect. Reed and his team will keep working with that care in mind until the clocks run out. “Any archaeological excavation, you never, never dig it all,” said Reed. One day soon, this will be a highway, but right now it’s a high point in Reed’s career. “It’s the biggest site, and coolest site I’ve gotten to work on.” 2534

QUICKSBURG, Va. – With a push of a button, 40,000 square feet seemingly come to life to show off America’s love affair with parades. “Every parade float tells a story,” said Joe Proctor, general manager of the American Celebration on Parade. Nestled in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, it’s a retirement village of sorts – for some of the largest floats of America’s most iconic parades. “Most people have no clue or no idea how big these parade floats are,” Proctor said. “Some of these or as long as 80 feet long and also go up to heights of over 30 feet.” Proctor grew up at the museum – literally. His father was once the general manager. Now, he runs the place. “I always felt a special love in my heart, like there was something in that,” he said. “I was a part of something very special.” So how did it all come to be here? Back in the 1940s, a man named Earl Hargrove was designing storefront window displays in Washington, D.C. His work caught the eye of President Harry Truman, who asked him to design a float for his inauguration parade. And the rest is history: Hargrove’s floats have appeared in every presidential inauguration parade since then. “We have a parade float that came out of Ronald Reagan's inauguration that's over 65 feet long and about 30 feet tall,” Proctor said. That’s not all: their floats have appeared in the Tournament of Roses Parade and Thanksgiving Day, among others. “Earl Hargrove loved parade floats,” Proctor said. “He loved decorating. And each year the parade floats kept getting bigger.” Hargrove couldn’t bear to get rid of them, so he built the museum to house them. We had the place all to ourselves on one December day, but during the summer, tens of thousands of people make their way there to see the lights, sounds and plenty of glitter. “He used to put glitter on lots of different things because he loved the flash,” Proctor said. Earl Hargrove passed away several years ago, but he ensured his decades of work remained ready to roll and show off a time-honored American tradition. A 15-year-old Texas teen was arrested after he was accused of spitting into a bottle of tea and putting the bottle back on the shelf, KOSA-TV 154

A 25-year-old mother was arrested in Mississippi after two of her three kids drowned when her locked vehicle rolled into a creek on Saturday. Leland police say they were called to check out the scene around 5:45 p.m. on March 9 after someone reported a Nissan Pathfinder floating in Deer Creek with kids trapped inside. The Leland Fire Chief and others had already found the vehicle and tried to break the windows to get the children out. They were only able to safely rescue one of the kids, 2-year-old Raelynn Johnson. Police say a dive team located the vehicle, which had drifted further downstream, about two hours later. The bodies of 4-year-old Steve Smith and 1-year-old Rasheed Johnson Jr. were located in the car. The mother, Jenea Monique Payne, reportedly told police she left the kids in the car while she went into a Stop-N-Shop store. She walked out to find the vehicle had rolled into the water. Payne was booked into jail on Monday and charged with two counts of manslaughter and one count of child neglect. Police say she was then released on her own Recognizance Bond by the county court. 1119
