Thousands of pro-gun rights activists converged around the Virginia Capitol on Monday to voice opposition to gun control legislation proposed by the Democratic-held legislature.Among the vocal critics of the bills were members of law enforcement, who used their official office to advocate against some of the proposals. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page its support for the protest. The sheriff’s office also posted photos of deputies in uniform holding a sign saying, “we support the second amendment.”“Great turnout for 2A rally in Richmond today! Standing room only!!” the post read. Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins also attended the rally to show his support. He said he would deputize gun owners if Virginia lawmakers move forward with gun legislation. It is unclear if said deputies would have arrest power.“My intent was to swear in thousands of auxiliary deputy sheriffs and make it legal for them to possess the weapons that they're trying to ban and restrict,” Jenkins said. Dozens of sheriffs in Virginia have stated that their departments would not enforce gun laws they feel are unconstitutional. Jenkins suggested, but would not directly answer, whether his department would enforce state laws involving gun control if Democrats move forward with legislation.“I'll have to make a determination if these laws they pass or a violation of that,” Jenkins said. Although thousands gathered in Richmond to protest gun legislation, Gov. Ralph Northam said there was a reason why Democrats were elected in Virginia. In his State of the Commonwealth address earlier this week, Northam referenced the legislature’s response to a mass shooting at a Virginia Beach municipal complex last year as a reason why Democrats gained a majority in the Virginia House for the first time in nearly three decades. “Virginians watched. They saw what happened, and they were appalled. So they changed the legislature. And here we are,” Northam said. While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier last week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month.Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and an adjacent legislative office building. Another one of the more controversial bills is a so called “red flag” law, which would allow for law enforcement to take away firearms from gun owners who are considered a danger to themselves or others. Northam defended this legislation as “constitutional.” “If you have demonstrated extreme risk of violence, or there’s a protective order against you, you shouldn’t have a firearm. This means universal background checks. If there’s nothing in your record, you have nothing to worry about,” the governor said. Jenkins isn’t convinced. “Right now, it's hard to say that we're going to disarm our citizens who often have a 10- or 15-minute response time in rural areas for an officer to arrive and say we're going to disarm the homeowner and restrict their rights to defend themselves,” the sheriff said. The Senate likely now has enough votes to pass a measure blocking President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration after Sen. Rand Paul signaled his support for the resolution of disapproval."I can't vote to give extraconstitutional powers to the President," the Kentucky Republican said Saturday, according to the 334

The US military has flown an increased number of reconnaissance flights in international airspace off the coast of Venezuela during the last several days to gather classified intelligence about the embattled government of President Nicholas Maduro, according to two US defense officials. The officials would not detail which US military aircraft are being used, but the Navy and Air Force maintain several large fixed-wing aircraft capable of intercepting communications and monitoring the status of weaponry. The officials noted that the effort is limited to whatever the aircraft can gather by staying in international airspace.Several US military officials continue to emphasize there are no military options actively being considered for the Venezuela crisis. For now, the US military would only contemplate a response if US assets, personnel or the embassy were attacked.Venezuela is in crisis as self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido battles Maduro for control.Guaido has called for other nations to send aid to the country in response to worsening food and medicine shortages. Maduro denies a humanitarian crisis exists in Venezuela and says the aid efforts are part of a coup attempt.Over the weekend, violence broke out when the Venezuelan military blocked aid convoys at the country's border. In the state of Tachira, along the border with Colombia, more than 300 people were hurt in clashes that involved firearms and Molotov cocktails, said the Venezuelan government's special envoy for Tachira state, Freddy Bernal. He said the attacks were conducted by irregular groups protesting Maduro's government on the international bridges along the border between Venezuela and Colombia -- the Simon Bolivar bridge in San Antonio and the Francisco de Paula Santander bridge in Ure?a."We registered no deaths despite the violent attacks for more than 15 hours of battle" by groups on the international bridges fighting "against thousands of patriots who fought and defended themselves," he said. CNN has not independently verified the numbers of the injured in these clashes. The opposition group said five people were killed. CNN has not verified those numbers. In other developments:? There’s a new warning out by the American Psychological Association (APA) that says traditional masculine ideology has been shown to have a negative impact on men and boys.As a father and mentor, Dr. Ryan E. Ross knows expressing emotions is not traditionally what most men consider masculine. “Young men who I work with, when I see them I shake their hand and I give them a hug and I tell them that I’m proud of them and that I love them, so that they know that it's OK, and that's the kinds of things that they should be hearing,” says Dr. Ross. And he's right. According to new findings out from the American Psychological Association, traditional masculinity ideology--which also includes achievement, anti-femininity, and not appearing weak-- can negatively influence mental health and physical health. “You're taught to be tough; you're taught not to cry,” he says. “You know, you're taught certain things are cool you know certain ways certain attitudes.” That's why for the first time in its 127-year history, the APA has released guidelines to help psychologists specifically address the issues of men and boys. They include: encouraging psychologists to recognize that masculinities are constructed based on social, cultural, and contextual norms; understand the impact of power, privilege, and sexism on the development of boys and men and on their relationships with others; and reduce the high rates of problems boys and men face and act out in their lives such as aggression, violence, substance abuse, and suicide. Some people disagree with the APA’s report. In the Washington Observer, Nicole Russell wrote in part, "the APA gets it wrong from the beginning by asserting traditional masculinity holds only these traits, which are not even all negative, as negative."The study's authors say the intention is to educate and raise awareness on the unique issues facing men and boys. 1907

The White House was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after an aircraft entered restricted airspace in the Washington area. The event caused senior national security officials across the agencies to convene to coordinate and monitor the situation, according to a US defense official, and aircraft have been deployed to monitor the situation, US Northern Command tweeted."Senior officials across the interagency are monitoring the situation on a national event conference call. NORAD aircraft are on site and responding," Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell, a Pentagon spokesman, told CNN.The White House lockdown has been lifted. Two US Capitol Police sources said the situation is being classified as an "aircon," which is an as yet unidentified incoming aircraft. The US Capitol Police have also given an all clear to the Capitol Hill complex, according to two US Capitol Police sources. 896
