If the White House takes the unprecedented step of trying to tip the scales on how safety and benefits will be judged, the impact on public trust will render an effective vaccine much less so.”Last week, Trump said it’s possible he would overrule the FDA if the agency uses stricter guidelines to give an emergency use authorization for a coronavirus vaccine candidate.The group of former commissioners blasted Trump for his comments.“The implications of the recent shift are potentially dire,” they wrote. “When the FDA warns about a risk from contaminated food, will people heed it? A Kentucky judge said Thursday that she hopes to issue a ruling soon on whether a grand juror in the Breonna Taylor case can speak publicly about the proceedings.Judge Annie O'Connell of the Jefferson County Circuit Court heard arguments during a 90 minute hearing Thursday from Kevin Glogower, the attorney for the unnamed grand juror, and Assistant Attorney General Victor Maddox.Glogower filed a motion on behalf of his client on Sept. 28, seeking a declaration of rights to "disclose information and details about the process and details of the grand jury proceedings."In a press conference held the next day, Glogower said his client had concerns about "truth and transparency.""Our client felt a strong conviction to step up and take action to get all of that information out," Glogower said at the time.Shortly after the motion was filed, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said his team had no concerns with grand jurors sharing "their thoughts on our presentation."But in a filing Wednesday, his office moved to dismiss the motion because "this type of broad and unchecked disclosure could jeopardize not only witnesses and other grand jurors but also set a dangerous legal precedent for future grand juries."Cameron's office has also suggested a disclosure by the grand juror could undermine the pending criminal case against former Louisville detective Brett Hankison, who was indicted by the grand jury for wanton endangerment."I think one of the problems with getting a fair trial, in a case as high profile as this, is finding a jury pool that has not been tainted by pretrial publicity," Maddox argued Thursday.O'Connell quickly challenged that argument."That cat's already out of the bag," she said. A drug called K2 is believed to be behind more than 100 overdoses in New Haven, Connecticut, this week. Some of those who overdosed experienced speeding heart rates, difficulty breathing and vomiting. Others were found collapsed in a semiconscious or unconscious state on the New Haven Green, the downtown park.Although no deaths were reported, two people experienced serious, life-threatening consequences. Earlier this year, K2 was also tied to 56 cases of severe bleeding, including four deaths, across Chicago and central Illinois. In a separate incident, 33 people collapsed on the streets of New York City. A little girl with a passion for writing letters is now becoming a published author.Emerson Weber went viral earlier this year when her dad tweeted her story.Emerson had about a dozen pen-pals at the time. She writes them letters filled with jokes and stories, and she always decorates the envelopes.“It's like a little piece of art that someone's going to find in their mailbox, and I get my inspiration from everywhere,” said Weber, author of “Sincerely, Emerson.”Weber wanted to thank her mail carrier for always taking all her letters, so she wrote him too. Her mail carrier then shared that letter with his supervisor at work, who shared it regionally, and the responses poured in. Two boxes full of letters from postal workers arrived.Some sent back stamps or asked her to send a letter to more people in their family.Many postal workers said they felt seen for the first time in a long time, and she wrote back to all of them.“In this time that's a little crazy, they're still out there doing their job, so we can stay connected to our pen pals and people we love,” said Weber.After her story spread online, even more people from all over started writing Weber.She hopes when people read her book, they realize how one act of kindness can spread.“And I also hope they take the time to write a letter because people really appreciate that,” she said. “Your grandparents, your friends, anyone would really love to get a letter from you and it's just so meaningful.”Her picture book based on the viral story, “Sincerely Emerson,” comes out next week. 1562
