SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego County have doubled in the past two weeks. As cases continue to soar through the country many hospitals are being pushed to their limits.Nurses at Paradise Valley Hospital have seen some of the worst cases of COVID-19. In a new series of PSA videos, frontline workers like Rochielle Jocson are urging everyone to keep fighting.Jocson spends the night shift in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit treating patients who are struggling to survive.“I get scared honestly,” said Jocson. “I don’t want to bring it home to my family.”For the past eight months, she’s suppressed exhaustion and conquered fear.“Sometimes it’s just not within your hands and you cry it out,” said Jocson. “Let it all out, take a deep breath and do it another day.”But the situation is only getting worse.In a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher says the number of COVID-related hospitalizations have doubled in the county over the last two weeks. County hospital beds are now inching towards 80% capacity.Jocson says they’re fully staffed and have enough supplies at Paradise Valley for now, but she knows the virus is unpredictable.“Resources are limited. We don’t know when the supplies are going to last,” said Jocson.She lives through the wrath of COVID every day and knows some people still aren’t listening to the warnings.“It’s heartbreaking to just see people not follow safety precautions,” said Jocson. “It’s like a punch in the gut so-to-speak to us healthcare workers.”She’s hoping to change that with a simple message.“You may be okay but the next person that you’re giving it to, will they be okay?” said Jocson.While the road ahead will still be long, there’s nowhere else she would rather be.“That’s why we keep going when at times we want to give up,” said Jocson. “Because you have that one patient that makes it worth it.”Paradise Valley Hospital tells ABC 10News their ICU is still under capacity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after a body was found floating in the ocean off the coast of San Diego Monday afternoon. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the body was discovered in the water approximately five miles off the coast of Mission Bay around noon. The body was found floating in the water with a life jacket nearby by a good Samaritan, the Coast Guard says. A second vest was also located in the water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man after finding more than million worth of narcotics inside his car.According to the agency, the incident began around 4 a.m. on October 4 when the 21-year-old man, a US citizen, entered the I-8 checkpoint.As agents questioned the man, a K-9 alerted authorities to the vehicle.After searching the car, agents found 36 wrapped packages under the driver’s side front tire.The brick-shaped packages were later found to contain 84 pounds of cocaine and four pounds of fentanyl pills.“Criminal organizations go to great lengths to conceal and smuggle dangerous narcotics in order to make millions of dollars. This is done without regard to the health and safety of our communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Authorities are looking for an inmate who walked away from a San Diego rehabilitation facility.Steven Vargas, 53, was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday after leaving the San Diego's Male Community Reentry Program, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Vargas had been given permission to leave the facility but didn't return when required.The facility allows eligible offenders with one year left to serve to do so in re-entry centers, providing them with rehabilitation services that assist them with substance use disorders, mental health care, employment, education, housing, and more. Officials said they were alerted that Vargas' electronic monitoring device had been tampered with just before noon Tuesday.Vargas was sentenced to four years in prison on May 6, 2019 for vehicle theft with prior vehicle related theft convictions and grand theft of a firearm. He was scheduled to be released on parole in June.Vargas is described as a Hispanic male, 6-feet tall, and weighs about 192 pounds. He was last seen wearing faded black jeans, black shoes, a blue shirt, and a charcoal grey sweater. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a car parked on the side of the freeway in Logan Heights early Monday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, The incident happened at about 3 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Oceanview Blvd.When fire crews arrived, the car was fully engulfed. Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly.When the smoke cleared, deputies found a rag in the gas tank and says it appeared the car had been set on fire intentionally.No injuries were reported.Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. 613
