BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday.The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week.The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15. A fresh spell of heavy rains has pounded Guangxi since June 14, triggering floods in some regions of Guangxi.A statement on the center's website urges officials in several provinces, including Fujian, Zhejiang and Guangdong, to prepare for "possible floods and geological hazards".Guangxi flood control and drought relief headquarters said on Wednesday that, as of Tuesday, the death toll from the recent spell of bad weather had climbed to 10 in the province, with 15 missing, and direct economic losses of nearly 400 million yuan (.8 million). The rain had also damaged 61 roads, ruined 66 dams and destroyed 1,170 houses.

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Xinhua) -- China represents a huge opportunity for American businesses, and the relationship between the two countries should not be portrayed as a zero sum game, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said on Wednesday."There are so many opportunities for trade to benefit both China and the United States," Locke said at a Senate Finance Committee hearing."I have seen those benefits first hand over the last 20 years, as Commerce Secretary, as an attorney in private practice, and as the governor of Washington State, where I helped double exports to China during my tenure."According to Locke, thanks to strong Chinese demand growth and recovery in prices of agricultural products, now the U.S. exports to China are growing faster than overall U.S. exports."We should neither underestimate the importance of the China market nor the potential it holds for American exporters who tap into it."During the same hearing, Ron Kirk, the U.S. trade representative, also hailed the opportunities provided by the China's growing economy."Thanks to China's strong recovery from the global recession, we have seen double digit growth in a variety of export sectors, ranging from high-end manufactured goods and chemical products to agricultural goods like soybeans," said Kirk.

SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.

  

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China will hold a series of activities under the title of "Chinese Culture Year" in Italy this year in a bid to advance bilateral exchanges and cooperation, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Thursday.Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said the cultural activities are to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Italy.Liu, also secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, made the remarks when meeting with Massimo D'Alema, president of the Italianieuropei Foundation and former prime minister of Italy.Liu said, the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership was in good shape, citing frequent high-level exchange, enhanced political mutual trust and expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Trade between China and Italy had continued to grow over the years, as each side had benefitted greatly from cooperation in science, technology, environment protection, culture, education and agriculture, he said.Liu said to celebrate 40 years of official ties this year, the countries should advance cooperation and exchanges in the areas of trade, economy, science, technology, education and tourism.D'Alema expressed the wish to further expand Italy-China cooperation in all fields.

  

GUIYANG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Tuesday proposed that China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) study the feasibility of educational integration at a proper time to ensure the supply of skilled people for the development of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area.Liu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the first China-ASEAN Education Minister Roundtable Conference and the third China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province.China and ASEAN should make efforts to integrate their educational resources, remove obstacles preventing student exchanges and encourage the recognition of academic degrees conferred in respective countries, so as to enhance the attraction and competitiveness of higher education in the region, she said."The Chinese government has always attached great importance to educational exchanges and cooperation with the ASEAN nations," she said.The two sides had established a comprehensive partnership of cooperation in education and developed new methods of educational exchanges with regional characteristics.
