(KGTV) - Business leaders in Solana Beach are calling on the city government for more help as they try to recover from the coronavirus pandemic and its ensuing economic fallout.On June 10, the City Council agreed to set aside 0,000 of CARES Act funding to distribute as grant money to businesses with 25 or fewer employees.While business owners 10News spoke to say they're grateful for any help they can get, some feel it's not enough."We have 1,000 to 1,200 small businesses here in the city that would qualify," says Chamber of Commerce Co-President Ron Blumberg. "So, you do the math."City officials haven't decided how they'll divvy up the money, or what businesses will have to do to apply. They also haven't said how many businesses would receive the grants.But if the money is given out equally, or even pro-rated based on size, it would only amount to a few hundred dollars per business. Blumberg says he'd like to see the city combine that money with other business-friendly moves.Blumberg thinks the city could waive permit fees and restrictions to allow all businesses to expand to their sidewalks. He says they could also remove parking restrictions."Anything that the City can do, to allow businesses to do business under these really crazy circumstances," says Blumberg.The City Council says they're looking into options and has allowed restaurants to add seating on the sidewalks. But in their last council meeting, they decided not to close portions of Cedros Avenue to traffic, which would have allowed businesses in the popular design district to expand even more.Other business owners say they'd like the local government to play more of an advocate role, marketing the city and bringing awareness of what has reopened. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A construction worker was killed in an accident at Monte Vista High School hours after the topping out of the school's new multi-use facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the accident happened just before 2 p.m.Deputies say the 30-year-old man fell from a beam attached to a 30-foot platform. Deputies and emergency responders performed first aid on the construction worker, but he later died after being taken to the hospital. A second worker was also injured and taken to the hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time, according to the school district. CA-OSHA is investigating the incident and crisis counselors will be made available at the school Thursday. Since the beginning of the year, wildfires have burned over 3.2 million acres in California. Since August 15, when California’s fire activity elevated, there have been 25 fatalities and over 4,200 structures destroyed.In August, three of California’s four largest wildfires on record sparked. Currently, the largest, the August Complex fire burning east of Chico, stands at 803,489 acres.“We’re living in a world with greater wildfire risk from one-degree warming. Two degrees of warming will intensify those risks,” said Dr. Noah Diffenbaugh, professor of Earth System Science at Stanford University.Dr. Diffenbaugh says in the last 40 years there has been a tenfold increase in the amount of land burned by wildfires, and that number directly correlates to Earth’s warming from climate change.He says the science is pretty straightforward. As temperature rises fuels dry out more easily, which makes less-prone areas spark plugs for fires. Then add in the changes in humidity, wind speeds, and long-term weather patterns that are all affected by climate change and wildfires become larger, stronger, and more frequent.Seventeen of California’s 20 largest fires in history all started after the year 2000.“Very careful, objective, hypothesis-driven research has shown that about half of that increase in the area burned in the western United States is attributable to the long-term warming,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh.The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions says between 1984 and 2015, the number of large wildfires doubled in the western United States. It also estimates that for every one-degree rise in Earth’s temperature, the average area burned from a wildfire could increase by 600 percent in some places.“We have two of the three largest wildfires in California’s history burning right now so it is a simple fact,” said Dr. Diffenbaugh.The increase in fire activity also increases the strain put on resources.Recently, national fire managers raised the United State’s fire preparedness level to five, which is its highest level, making all fire-trained federal employees available for assignment. 2112

Sheriff's deputies in California were conducting an area check Wednesday when they came upon a large, rectangular box made of plywood -- and found three children living near mounds of trash and human feces.The box was on a property that had neither running water nor electricity and was surrounded by large holes, police said. There were also 30 to 40 cats inside a travel trailer and roaming freely, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.Police said deputies found that three children -- age 11, 13 and 14 -- had been living in the large plywood box for about four years. The box measured about 20 feet long, 4 feet high and 10 feet wide. The children, police said, were found with "an inadequate amount of food and were living in an unsuitable and unsafe environment." Children and Family Service responded and took custody of the children.The parents, Mona Kirk, 51, and Daniel Panico, 73, were arrested on charges of willful cruelty to a child. Their bail was set at 0,000. It is not clear whether the couple has an attorney or when they will appear in court.Cindy Bachman, San Bernardino Sheriff spokeswoman, said Panico was living in the trailer while Kirk was living in the box with the three children.Bachman said the children did not require any medical attention and deputies were not aware of any other abuse.San Bernardino County Capt. Get a sense for what it’s like to work in a role, what the requirements are and how much you’re likely to earn before you commit.You can avoid surprises by looking up a company’s Better Business Bureau rating, reading through the fine print on its website and checking out reviews on sites like SideHusl and Indeed.“Let’s say you’re interested in delivery jobs, and you’ve got DoorDash, Instacart and Postmates. If you’re a rideshare driver, delivery driver or mover, your personal auto insurance policy doesn’t cover you for commercial risk, Kristof says.“Some online platforms automatically cover you with a commercial policy. Others do not. So you should always look for that if you’re working for an online platform,” Kristof says.Still, that won’t necessarily cover you in all circumstances, such as when you’re en route to pick up an order. Talk to your insurance company to ensure you get the proper protection.You’ll also want to find out whether you’ll be classified as an employee or independent contractor. This determines how you’ll pay taxes and whether or not you’ll be entitled to certain benefits. Independent contractors need to set aside a portion of their pay for taxes themselves. Employers automatically withhold income taxes for employees and usually offer health insurance, 401(k) matches or paid time off.Weiler Reynolds says freelancers or contractors may also have to pay taxes quarterly, which can be a bigger time investment.Don’t forget to make safety a priority.
