CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread has been stopped after a fire sparked near a canyon in Chula Vista Thursday evening. The fire started around 5 p.m. in a canyon on the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive. It is in a residential area near the San Miguel Mountain Trailhead.Video from the scene showed white smoke billowing from the canyon. (KGTV) — Upstairs in the visiting room he teared up saying this was a big misunderstanding.Thomas Escajeda, 61, is accused of threatening St. Rose of Lima church and a school at 293 H St. Tuesday, according to Chula Vista Police. Police says he threatened to harm parishioners attending a mass for All Saints Day on Thursday at 8 a.m.Escajeda, however, told 10News from jail Thursday that the accusations are a mistake. Escajeda, who has attended the church for a year, said he called the church with the idea to sell hot chocolate, coffee and maybe some donuts to warm the congregation up during the cold morning hours before service.He says it was the phrase, "I'd make a killing," that sent the person on the other end into a panic.RELATED: Chula Vista church receives threat against All Saints Day massThe mass and Thursday classes were canceled despite the arrest.If Escajeda did say those words the timing couldn't have been worse with the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh last Saturday.Thursday, he had one message — directed to his wife and stepdaughter."I miss them every day, even though I've been here for a day and a half, basically think before you speak," Escajeda said.10News has reached out to the church to verify Escajeda's story. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Nearly 5,000 people were without power Saturday evening in Chula Vista, according to SDG&E.The outage began about 7:30 p.m. with around 1,700 customers in the dark. It expanded to about 4,800 by 9:30 p.m., according to SDG&E's website.The power was restored at about 10 p.m. SDG&E did not provide the cause of the outage.This is a developing story. 10News will update when details become available.  445

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista’s controversial Drag Queen Story Time is moving to a different branch to accommodate the number of registrants, city officials said Tuesday. The event, which was supposed to take place at the Otay Ranch library, will now be held at the Civic Center library on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. “The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and programming at the City’s three libraries includes and reflects the diverse communities the libraries serve,” city officials said in a news release. “Hosting drag queens to read and relate with children promotes reading and literacy and sends a positive message of acceptance and tolerance.” A protest against the event was held Thursday, as opponents said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. Chula Vista Police intervened twice between both sides of the issue. (KGTV) - Parents in Chula Vista are horrified after finding out that dozens of children are taking part in what is being called an after-school fight club. Alain Tripp has lived across the street from Bonita Vista Middle School for more than a decade. Once the bell rings, he sees students walk along the canyon trail to go home. But lately, he has been noticing something else. “Every so often I see a group of 15-20 kids. They’ll be standing there and fighting,” Tripp said.Tripp is not the only one who has seen fighting just off campus.Other neighbors said they had witnessed dozens of kids running down the trail on minimum-day Fridays, to participate in organized fights at Discovery Park. One Bonita Vista Middle School student’s mother sent 10News a photo of what appears to be many students scattering after one of the so-called fights. Parents said the students then upload fight videos onto a secret Instagram account, seeking internet fame.“They just see a lot of people who are Youtube famous… A famous Youtuber popping up in their heads and stuff,” Tripp said. “I feel like every year, kids are trying to grow up faster.”Some neighbors told 10News that they have tried to stop the alleged fights, but they say these keep happening. Now, the school is stepping in. 10 News got a copy of the letter sent to parents from Bonita Vista Middle School Principal, Teresa Kramer. 1457
