EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — A gas leak in the East County forced several businesses to abruptly close Friday, as crews worked to stop the leak. The gas leak occurred North Marshall Ave. and Petree St. at about 12 p.m. when crews with Helix Water District struck a gas pipe while installing a communications line, according to El Cajon Fire Department.A representative with the water district said HWD personnel arrived at the scene after the rupture had occurred and are not responsible for the damage.Crews evacuated a nearby shopping center, where customers at the Black Bear Diner were given five minutes to leave the area. The leak also forced a nearby Rock Church and school to evacuate. For four hours, several blocks were closed to motorists and MTS trolley and bus service were impacted in the area.SDG&E has since stopped the leak by pinching off a section of the pipe in another area. Crews plan to take an additional two hours to repair the damged section of the gas line.No injuries were reported. 1017

Dr. Anthony Fauci again broke with President Donald Trump on several key aspects to the administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic during a conversation at Georgetown University on Tuesday.Notably, Fauci said that while schools' goal should be to reopen in the fall, the decision should be left up to local districts in areas where the virus is surging."We should try as best as possible to keep kids in school," Fauci said. "...however, that's going to vary depending on where you are in the country."Fauci said in areas where the virus isn't prevalent; schools should feel comfortable reopening to students. But in areas where cases are spiking — Fauci identified Arizona, California, Florida and Texas as states where the pandemic is the worst — the decision should be left to local officials. He added that districts should "make a decision based on the judgment that the safety of the children and safety of the teachers is paramount."President Donald Trump has called for all schools to reopen in the fall, and threaten to withhold federal funding in districts that choose not to open to students. In addition, Fauci also broke with Trump on testing. While Trump has said as recently as Saturday that spiking case numbers in America are the result of a high volume of tests, Fauci pointed out that other troubling specifics are on the rise."There's no doubt it's both (the number of tests and the uncontrollable spread of the virus that are causing case numbers to rise)," Fauci said.He added that the percentage of positive tests to the total number of tests taken is on the rise in many parts of the country. He also pointed out the hospitalizations are also up throughout the country and added that deaths may rise in the coming days. However, Fauci added that he does not believe the average amount of deaths will rise to the level of where they were in the spring, adding that the average age of a COVID-19 patient is skewing younger than it was earlier in the pandemic. Finally, Fauci was asked who Americans should trust during the pandemic."Trust respected medical authorities...who have a track record of telling the truth," Fauci said. He included himself among the group of "respected medical authorities."The discussion was hosted both by Georgetown's Institute of Politics and Public Service and the Global Health Initiative.Fauci's comments come as the White House continues to sideline him from official briefings with the Coronavirus Task Force, of which he is a member. It also comes days after reports emerged that White House officials were "concerned" about Fauci's recommendations during the pandemic, including advice from earlier this year in which he urged Americans not to wear masks.Initially, Fauci did recommend that Americans avoid wearing masks in an effort to keep from emptying an already-depleted stockpile of personal protective equipment. He has since made an about-face and has urged all Americans to wear masks. He's also admitted that the mixed messaging has been detrimental in slowing the spread of the virus."We have to admit it, that that mixed message in the beginning, even though it was well-meant to allow masks to be available for health workers, that was detrimental in getting the message across," Fauci told NPR earlier this month. "No doubt about it."Meanwhile, other White House officials — like Surgeon General Jerome Adams — also initially recommended against the use of masks. President Donald Trump has also spread disinformation about the virus, and retweeted claims that "everyone is lying" about the disease — including the CDC.On Monday, Trump claimed that despite Fauci's lack of public appearances, the two still have a "good" relationship. 3723

Driving down a dirt logging road in rural Maine, paramedic Nathan Yerxa can’t help but take in the view most days. Looking out over the landscape here, it’s as if the sky and the land seem to merge.Yerxa is a paramedic for North East Mobile Health Services and stationed in Jackman, Maine, a small town in the northern part of this state home to about 700 people. From the edge of town, you can see the Canadian border in the distance, and on any given day, paramedics here are responsible for covering an area that’s approximately the size of the state of Rhode Island.“The remote landscape and difficult terrain make it difficult to bring resources to the area,” Yerxa said, as he drove through town in a Ford pickup truck that’s been converted to an all-terrain ambulance.Like rural communities across the country, getting patients to an emergency room in this area is a difficult, often time-consuming task. The closest ER is about 70 miles away, a trip that can sometimes take close to two hours. While Jackman does have a community health center, the facility can’t perform many emergency procedures most larger hospitals can.So, in an effort to save time and lives, the emergency room is being brought to Jackman in an innovative new way, harnessing technology and the expertise of paramedics likes Yerxa.“I think it’s one of those situations where what’s old is new again,” he said. The idea is a Critical Access Integrated Paramedic program. Paramedics here are receiving more training in critical care. While at the same time, that pickup truck Yerxa relies on is being outfitted with tools like satellite internet and a satellite phone. First responders even have heart rate monitors that can send data wirelessly to a doctor anywhere. The concept is simple. Using technology, paramedics can instantly connect to a doctor no matter where they take a call. From stitches to ultrasounds, paramedics in this region are bridging the rural healthcare gap by instantly connecting via video chat to a doctor who may be hours away.“It is in many ways like a high-tech home visit that you might have seen 60 years ago, but we’re also bringing urgent care services with us,” Yerxa explained.Finding new ways for rural communities to connect is a key component to the program's success.Nationwide 25 million people don't have access to broadband. The COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified the issue. In Maine alone, 36,000 telehealth calls were made last month up from 650 the same time last year. Many times, though, patients and doctors have trouble connecting because of poor internet connections.Town manager Victoria Forkus pushed hard for the program.“We were in a way forced to implement this new program early because of COVID,” she said while sitting inside Jackman’s town offices. The whole program is costing Jackman and surrounding communities about 0,000 a year to implement. Some of the money will come from a tax increase, which is no small feat in a town where the median income is just ,000.But out here, the program has overwhelming support.“What’s the dollar amount on one of my neighbors’ lives? What’s the cost of saving a community member? It’s priceless,” Forkus added. The concept of the program is gaining attention across the state.Jim Rogers, with Health Connect Networks based in Maine, is lobbying Congress hard to expand rural broadband connectivity. It’s something he says is now more imperative than ever given the pandemic.“People in these rural communities just don’t have adequate internet to support a telehealth consult,” he said.As for Yerxa, he sees the program as something other rural communities across the country can emulate.“Hopefully, we can now provide 24-hour coverage to patients in any of these rural locations.” 3770

Disney is allowing guests at Magic Kingdom to wear Halloween costumes for the first time during normal park hours. The park recently announced in a blog post that guests of all ages can wear costumes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31.In June, the park canceled its annual Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party because of the coronavirus pandemic. But this year, guests would be able to get into the Halloween spirit with costumes, themed foods, and merchandise, the park said.According to the park's website, costumes cannot contain sharp objects, they must be family-friendly, they can't have weapons, and anyone over the age of 14 cannot wear a mask with their outfit.Guests under the age of 13 can wear a mask, but it cannot cover the entire face, and their eyes must be visible. The park said costumes that "reach or drag on the ground" such as "full-length princess dresses" are not allowed. The park also added that all guests must still wear a face-covering while at the park. 978

Earlier this week, Russian president Vladimir Putin said that his country has produced a vaccine against the coronavirus, but American-based experts have expressed concerns over the efficacy of the vaccine, and whether the country cut corners in its production.Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with ABC News’ Deborah Roberts that he has concerns that the vaccine has not had a chance to be fully studied by scientists."I hope that the Russians have actually, definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective," Fauci said. "I seriously doubt that they've done that."Also in an interview with ABC News, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that while the US hopes to have a vaccine produced soon, it’s important to have a one that is fully vetted by science.“The point is not to be first with a vaccine, the point is to have a vaccine that is safe and effective for the American people and the people of the world,” Azard told ABC.Russian Direct Investment Fund, which is a Russian governmental agency, says that the vaccine has quickly garnered demand throughout the world, with 20 countries requesting the vaccine."We can confirm that 1 billion is the request, actually slightly more than 1 billion, is the amount of preliminary requests we received from more than 20 countries so far,” Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, said. While Putin did not confirm if he had taken the vaccine, he said that his daughter was received it.While the US has a number of ongoing trials, it appears that a vaccine is still months away from getting approved. And then getting a vaccine to millions of Americans could take additional time.President Donald Trump said he is ready to employ military resources in order to quickly distribute a COVID-19 vaccine. There is immense pressure on the US to produce a vaccine with more than 1,000 Americans dying from the coronavirus per day in recent weeks, according to Johns Hopkins University data.“I feel strongly that we will have a vaccine by the end of the year and it will be put in service maybe even as we get it because we are already set militarily, we are using our military to distribute the vaccine,” Trump said. 2284
