BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader on Thursday urged the cultural industry to make greater efforts to improve China's capacity to communicate internationally and boost cultural exchanges between China and other countries.     Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said when visiting the 16th Beijing International Book Fair, the cultural industry was a new area of growth with tremendous potential.     Praising achievements made in the sector despite the global downturn, Li said it should strengthen international communication and promote China's brand names effectively and professionally.     The Beijing International Book Fair, initiated in 1986, is one of the world's four largest book fairs. This year, the five-day fair has attracted 1,800 publishing houses from nearly 60 countries and regions. BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chairman Ning Gaoning of China National Cereals, Oils & Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), said Sunday the corporation's total investment in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would reach 10 billion yuan (1.46 billion U.S. dollars) over the next five years.     Ning made the remarks during his visit to the Xinjiang-based subsidiary companies of the corporation, the country's largest oil and food producer.     Currently, COFCO's accumulative investment in the region is about 5 billion yuan, focused on tomato processing, sugar manufacturing, and beverages.     Ning said the corporation would double investment over the next five years due to confidence in the region's growth potential, but did not say for which the future investment would be targeted.     In 2005, COFCO made an investment in Xinjiang's Tunhe Investment Co., Ltd. by taking over a 37.2 percent share of Tunhe. So far COFCO Tunhe has become the largest tomato ketchup producer in Asia, and the second largest in the world.

CHENGDU, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin has urged local governments in southwest China's Sichuan Province to boost post-quake reconstruction in the areas jolted by a massive earthquake last year.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks during his inspection tour to Sichuan Province from Aug. 14 to 18. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said Saturday it is drafting a development plan for the emerging industry of energy conservation and environmental protection.     The commission said in a statement posted on its Web site that the move is aimed to counter the impact of the global financial crisis by "accelerating the cultivation of emerging industries and aiming at a commanding height in future economic competition."     The development plan on the sector covers energy conservation, sustainable use of resources and environmental protection, according to the statement.     Technologies, equipment, products and services concerning energy conservation and environmental protection would be involved in the plan, it said.     The commission revealed no further details on the plan.
