BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainfalls have ended in South China's flood-battered Provinces and water levels of major rivers in Jiangxi and Hunan provinces are receding, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) Sunday.However, flood prevention work must not slow down since risks remain, said the SFDH.Also, water levels in Jiangxi Province's Ganjiang River and Poyang Lake remain higher than normal warning levels and water in Hunan Province's Dongting Lake is still rising.Persistent heavy rains that have devastated parts of south China had, by Saturday, left 379 dead, and 141 missing, and resulted in economic losses estimated at 82.4 billion yuan, the SFDH said.The torrential rains and ensuing floods have affected 68.7 million people in 22 provincial-level regions along with 4.36 million hectares of farmland, said the headquarters.

CHANGSHA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Six men were trapped underground after being overwhelmed by a coal gas leak in central China' s Hunan Province Wednesday. Three of the men remain missing, a government spokesman said.Rescuers have confirmed that three of the trapped miners are alive as rescue crews had contacted them with underground communication systems, according to a spokesman from Jiahe County Government.h The trapped workers were gas inspectors and repairmen, the spokesman said.The accident took plane at noon Wednesday in a 30-meter-deep shaft at the Tianxin Mining Company located in Jiahe County of Hunan Province, which is a legal mining company owned by the local township.A tunnel to reach the trapped men has been completed and the rescue work is continuing.The cause of the accident is under investigation.

GUANLING, Guizhou, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a rain-triggered landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province had risen to 13 after rescuers recovered another two bodies Thursday night, rescue headquarters said.Some 2,000 people continued the rescue operation, but the chance of survival for the other 86 villagers was slim after being buried under mud for three days, rescuers said.More bodies are expected to be found as rescuers comb the ruins."It is almost impossible for any of the trapped to be alive now. We are doing our utmost to retrieve the bodies. CHENGDU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday reopened a key road leading to a mudslide-hit county in southwest China's Sichuan Province, which local officials called an important step in speeding up relief and rescue efforts.Traffic resumed on National Highway 213, linking the provincial capital Chengdu to Wenchuan County, on Sunday afternoon after emergency crews worked for nine days to clear the mudslide sludge and debris on the highway.On August 13, mudslides struck parts of Wenchuan, cutting a section of the highway after torrential downpours pelted the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba.At least 15 people have been killed and 31 remain missing, according to the latest available government figures.Wenchuan was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and neighboring provinces in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.Heavy precipitation is particularly dangerous in terrains once shaken by earthquakes, which then become more vulnerable to geological disasters, said Hao Liping, the head of the provincial meteorological bureau.
