Before last week, membership in the National Rifle Association meant gaining access to a broad range of discounts. From special rates on auto insurance policies to cheaper flights when you booked through its website, the NRA's discount program offered a lot of perks. But in the wake of a massacre at a Florida high school on February 14, activists flooded social media with calls to end corporate partnerships with America's most powerful gun lobby.Since Thursday, more than a dozen brands severed ties with the organization. In a statement, the National Rifle Association called the decisions "a shameful display of political and civic cowardice.""In time, these brands will be replaced by others who recognize that patriotism and determined commitment to Constitutional freedoms are characteristics of a marketplace they very much want to serve," the statement said.NRA members still have access to other perks, such as a free gun-owner insurance plan and options to save on travel costs. But the listings on the organization's "Member Benefits" page have dwindled. Here's how it all went down.Thursday, February 22The First National Bank of Omaha said it will stop issuing an NRA-branded Visa card. A bank spokesperson said "customer feedback" prompted a review of its partnership with the NRA, and it chose not to renew its current contract.Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental, which are all owned by Enterprise Holdings, announced the brands would stop offering NRA membership discounts on March 26.Friday, February 23Symantec, which makes the Norton anti-virus software and owns the identity theft protection company LifeLock, announced it "has stopped its discount program" with the NRA.Hertz made its announcement in a tweet. "We have notified the NRA that we are ending the NRA's rental car discount program with Hertz," the company said.MetLife said it will stop offering NRA member discounts for home and auto insurance policies.SimpliSafe, which makes home security systems, "discontinued our existing relationship with the NRA," CEO Chad Laurans said in a statement.Related: Bank of America wants to talk to its customers who make guns Avis and Budget Rent a Car, which are owned by Avis Budget Group, said through a spokesperson that the brands will stop offering discounts on car rentals to NRA members beginning March 26.Allied and North American, two moving-van lines that are both owned by Sirva, said that the brands "no longer have an affiliate relationship with the NRA effective immediately."TrueCar, a car buying service, said late Friday that it would end its deal with the NRA as of February 28.Saturday, February 24Delta Air Lines announced Saturday morning that it's ending discounted rates for NRA members. "We will be requesting that the NRA remove our information from their website," the company said in a tweet.United Airlines followed a short time later, saying the company will no longer offer discounts on flights to the NRA annual meeting.Paramount RX works with a third-party vendor to provide a prescription drug discount program to NRA members, but the company said in a tweet Saturday that it is "working with that vendor to discontinue the program and remove the offering."Starkey, a company that makes hearing aids, announced Saturday evening that it has decided "not to renew our discount program with the NRA" and asked the organization to "remove our information from their website."  3467

Beginning in 2024, there will be new standards for nominees of the coveted Best Picture Academy Award. The changes are meant to encourage equitable representation and “better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience,” according to the Academy. In order for a film to qualify to be a Best Picture nominee, they must meet two of four new representation and inclusion standards. It’s part of Academy Aperture 2025, an initiative by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that sets specific inclusion goals for the organization and the films it recognizes.Movies wishing to be considered for Best Picture in 2022 and 2023 will need to submit a form attesting to their inclusion and representation practices, however meeting the specific Academy standards will not be required until the 96th Oscars in 2024.The standards include having at least 30 percent of all actors on-screen from at least two underrepresented groups, having a storyline or theme that centers on underrepresented group(s); as well as efforts behind the camera like having representation from underrepresented groups in creative leadership and department head positions, overall crew composition, and paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities for underrepresented groups.“The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.”Another change fans will notice in 2021, the Best Picture category will be limited to ten nominees, rather than a fluctuating number year-to-year.Here is the full list of standards from the Academy. Band-Aid is doing its part to address racial disparities by introducing a line of bandages in light, medium and deep shades of black and brown skin tones. The brand, owned by Johnson & Johnson, made the announcement on Instagram last week, saying the intent is to “embrace the beauty of diverse skin.”“We are dedicated to inclusivity and providing the best healing solutions, better representing you,” the brand continued.Additionally, Band-Aid said it will be making a donation to Black Lives Matter as a first of many steps to help address systemic racism.A Band-Aid spokesperson told CNN that it will be a 0,000 donation, in addition to the million that its parent company has committed to fight racism and injustice in the U.S. over the next three years. While Band-Aid’s new line is a step in the right direction, other brands have been doing this for some time now.For example, Tru-Colour Products was founded by a white father in 2014 who wanted to celebrate his adopted black son’s identity. Another example is Browndages, a black-owned bandage company founded by a husband and wife who were trying to fill a void in the market.Band-Aid itself has sold multiracial bandages in the past. In 2005, the brand launched its Perfect Blend products, but the company discontinued them because of “lack of interest at the time,” Band-Aid told CNN. The company still sells Perfect Blend products, but they’re clear.“We stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues, collaborators and community in the fight against racism, violence and injustice. We are committed to taking actions to create tangible change for the Black community,” Band-Aid said. 1663

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s launching a new membership program called Walmart+ that can save customers money and time.Walmart+ members will receive unlimited free delivery from stores, fuel discounts and access to tools that make shopping faster, the company said in a press release.Membership will be available to all customers on Sept. 15 and it will cost a year or .95 per month, a similar price point to Amazon Prime. The Walmart+ membership also includes a 15-day trial period.Amazon, one of Walmart’s biggest competitors, has been offering Prime since 2005 and has racked up more than 150 million members, so the retail giant has an uphill battle to catch up, The Associated Press reports. The initial list of Walmart+ benefits are below:Unlimited free delivery: In-store prices as fast as same-day on more than 160,000 items from tech and toys to household essentials and groceries. This service was previously known as Delivery Unlimited – a subscription service that allows customers to place an unlimited number of deliveries for a low, flat yearly or monthly fee. Current subscribers will automatically become Walmart+ members.Scan & Go: Unlock Scan & Go in the Walmart app — a fast way to shop in-store. Using the Walmart app, customers can scan their items as they shop and pay using Walmart Pay for a quick, easy, touch-free payment experience.Fuel discounts: Fill up and save up to 5 cents a gallon at nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express fuel stations. Sam’s Club fuel stations will soon be added to this lineup.Walmart says the list of benefits will continue to grow over time. These benefits come in addition to the retailer’s existing customer offerings like free curbside pickup, NextDay delivery and two-day delivery. Walmart will continue to have delivery options with a per-delivery transaction fee so customers can choose the service that’s best for them.“Customers know they can trust us and depend on us, and we’ve designed this program as the ultimate life hack for them,” said Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer. “Walmart+ will bring together a comprehensive set of benefits where we see the greatest needs from our customers and where our scale can bring solutions at an unprecedented value.” 2300
