The campus will get a new 2-story building, featuring 26 state-of-the-art classrooms, as part of a "Whole School Modernization" project.Other aspects of the project include renovations to the existing cafeteria and library media enter, as well as a new HVAC system for the auditoriums and science classrooms."We'll have classrooms that represent 21st-century learning spaces," says SDUSD Facilities Communication Supervisor Samer Naji. "You're talking about flexible furniture so that the students and teachers can be creative with the way they use their spaces. You're talking about state of the art technology, voice amplification systems, smart boards that the teachers and students can all use."The administration offices will also be moved to a different part of campus, creating a more easily identifiable entryway for visitors."Right now it's a large priority for the campus that we have a secure entry," says Naji. "This ensures that, during the day when kids are in class, there's only one way in and one way out of campus."Security has been at the forefront of many SDUSD projects in the wake of school shootings across the country. District officials say they want to make sure all campuses only have a single entry for visitors. The new layout at PB Middle School will accomplish that goal.The building opened in 1931. Over the years, upgrades and expansions brought it to its current 13.8-acre footprint.Money for the project is coming from voter-approved Propositions S & Z. As part of the renovation, the current two-story library & classroom building will be torn down. Demolition begins in July. The work will be done in two phases, so the school can keep enough classrooms on site to accommodate students.Unfortunately, some of the murals on the current building will be lost in the demolition. The school's principal says they want to work with students and community members to design new murals for the new building.In 2017, SDUSD completed work on a new joint-use athletic field at the Middle School. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As coronavirus cases increase across the country, there is a concern about staffing in hospitals across Southern California.Not only are hospitals dealing with patients they typically see during this time of year, COVID-19 patients are adding stress to thinning resources.“If these trends continue, we’re going to have to much more dramatic—arguably drastic—action,” said Governor Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday.Currently, 74 percent of ICU beds are occupied in Southern California. State health officials protect it to be at 107 percent capacity by December 24th.“I have a guarded concern about the direction that we’re moving in,” said nurse practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr of the rising cases.Gambles Farr said she is not only worried about staffing numbers, but also the physical and mental health of her colleagues. “The staffing issues have always been something that we've dealt with in the ICU because of the critical acuteness of our patients and the burnout of staff,” she said. ‘In these unprecedented times with COVID in the pandemic, what we're seeing is that nurses are picking up a lot more overtime and shifts.”Early in the pandemic, the state created the California Health Corps. It asked for those with health care experience to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. Thousands, including retired workers and nursing students, volunteered to help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s superintendent of schools announced a new plan to study the role and impact of police on school campuses.During a Wednesday morning virtual press conference, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said he wants to speed up research in examining how police at schools affect students.“We need to set clear standards that police officer should never be dean of students or disciplinarian for student behavior,” Thurmond said.Schools may still need police on campus to respond to situations such as active shooters or bomb threats, Thurmond said, but he was clear that officers should never treat students like criminals.In the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and as people across the U.S. call for systemic change in the role police play in all of our lives, Thurmond is organizing a task force to study police presence at schools.“We should have more restorative justice programs, focus on de-escalation, programs that focus on intervention that can be done by those who have the ability to use peacemaking skills to reduce violence,” Thurmond said.San Diego County is no stranger to police-related controversy on local school campuses.In 2016, a fight at Lincoln High School ended with school police using Tasers and pepper spray on students. One officer and four students were hospitalized, and two students were arrested.In 2018, a campus police officer slammed a student at Helix High School onto the ground. With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, the guidelines include things like physical distancing and wearing a mask when not eating or drinking. There are specific guidelines for counties in the purple tier, like San Diego County. Counties in the purple tier are required to gather outdoors. Health officials recommend no more than three households and limiting the gathering to two hours or less. Infectious disease specialists say the guidelines are strict, but necessary to slow the spread of the virus. Other recommendations include having guests frequently wash their hands and having only one person serve food and beverages, with a mask on. Older and at-risk individuals are advised not to attend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews were able to extinguish a fire in Clairemont Friday afternoon reportedly started by a crash. According to California Highway Patrol, the blaze started on Boyd Avenue near Genesee Avenue. San Diego Police say at 5:24, a suspect hit several vehicles on Balboa and Mount Alifan Drive before taking off.
