The evacuation of passengers from a cruise ship off the western coast of Norway has come to an end as the vessel sails to port, Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement.Rescue teams airlifted 479 people from the vessel after it was stranded in stormy seas Saturday with 1,300 passengers and crew on board. Passengers disembarked with tales of terrifying conditions, with many having been tossed about by wind and waves for 20 hours after the vessel sent a distress signal. The Viking Sky cruise ship, which regained engine power on Sunday morning, is traveling to Molde harbor accompanied by two supply ships and one tug assist vessel. There are 436 guests and 458 crew still remaining on board.Twenty people who sustained injuries in the incident were being treated at medical facilities in Norway, or had already been discharged, Viking Ocean Cruises said."Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and well-being of our passengers and our crew," Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement, thanking Norwegian emergency services and local residents for their support.Rescuers were facing rough seas and waves as high as 6-8 meters (roughly 19-26 feet) as they worked to airlift passengers from the Hustadvika area on the western coast of Norway by helicopter. The Norwegian Red Cross, which was treating passengers from the ship at an evacuation center in Hustadvika, 1398
The Hubble Telescope can sure find some scary images of deep space in a video released by NASA on Monday. The images were of the twin galaxies AM 2026-424, which is a mere 724 million light-years away from Earth. That means the light we are seeing on Earth was emitted 724 million years ago. From Earth, the colliding galaxies appear to form the shape of a face, with two "eyes," which make up the core of the galaxies."Each 'eye' is the bright core of a galaxy, one of which slammed into another. The outline of the face is a ring of young blue stars. Other clumps of new stars form a nose and mouth," NASA said in a statement.""Although galaxy collisions are common—especially back in the young universe—most of them are not head-on smashups, like the collision that likely created this Arp-Madore system," NASA added. "The violent encounter gives the system an arresting 'ring' structure for only a short amount of time, about 100 million years. The crash pulled and stretched the galaxies' disks of gas, dust, and stars outward. This action formed the ring of intense star formation that shapes the nose and face." 1129
The holiday shopping season is upon us and it’s never too early to start scoping out gift ideas, especially for the children in your life. The Federal Aviation Administration will begin its own investigation of a deadly plane crash at an airport in Addison, Texas, in which a private plane crashed into a hangar Sunday killing all 10 people aboard, the FAA said in a statement.Addison spokesman Ed Martelle told CNN that the private plane was leaving the airport when it veered into the hangar before bursting into flames Sunday morning shortly after 9 a.m. local time.National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Bruce Landsberg told reporters during a news conference Sunday night that two victims were members of the flight crew and the other eight were passengers on the Beechcraft Super King Air 350 aircraft. The victims have not yet been identified as authorities are still notifying their families, Landsberg said.Members of the NTSB arrived on the scene to investigate the crash Sunday afternoon and began assessing the damage to the plane immediately, Jennifer Rodi, senior air safety investigator with the NTSB, told reporters. The plane suffered damage from the force of the impact and the fire that broke out after the crash, Rodi said.Rodi said the NTSB is aware of three videos of the incident and is currently reviewing them. She urged anyone else with video to send it to the NTSB for review. The plane was scheduled to fly from Addison -- about 15 miles north of Dallas -- to St. Petersburg, Florida, Martelle said. But just after take off the plane veered and crashed into a private hangar, damaging two aircraft inside, Landsberg said. The fire department was just 220 yards from the crash, Martelle added, so the response was immediate and the fire in the hangar was extinguished. No cause for the crash is known but a preliminary report is expected in two weeks, Landsberg said.Landsberg said the plane recently changed owners and the tail number information was not immediately available.Eight investigators with the NTSB arrived Sunday and five more specialists are on their way to assist in the investigation, Landsberg said. 2018
