A Denver family is trying to raise million in order to cure their son with a rare genetic disease. Doctors told Amber Freed that her 2-year-old son is one of 34 people in the world to have this rare neurological genetic disease. “The disease is so rare, it doesn’t even have a name,” Freed said. “It’s called SLC6A1, because that is the gene that it effects.” The disease causes Maxwell to have trouble moving and communicating, and soon it will only get worse. “The most debilitating part of the disease will begin between the ages of 3 and 4,” Freed said. “So, we are in a fight against time.”Maxwell has a twin sister named Riley. “I noticed early on that Maxwell wasn’t progressing as much as Riley,” Freed said. “I noticed he couldn’t use his hands. The doctors told me that every baby can use their hands. That’s when I realized there was something wrong with him.”After multiple visits to the doctor, Freed was able to find a genetic specialist to give Maxwell a diagnosis. “He looked at me and said, ‘Something is very wrong with your son. I don’t know if he’s going to live,’” Freed said. “My soul was just crushed. It was a sadness I didn’t even know existed on earth. You never think something like this could happen. I left my career, and I had no other choice but to create my own miracle and to find a treatment forward to help Maxwell and all those others like him.” Freed searched for scientists trying to create a cure, which she found at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “We’re working with diseases where kids are born with a defective gene,” said Steven Gray, an associate professor at UTSW in pediatrics. “Our approach is to replace that gene to fix the condition at the level of their DNA. We’re taking the DNA that those patients are missing and packaging that into a virus and use that virus as a molecular delivery truck to carry those genes back in their body and fix their DNA.” “It’s a rare disease, no one has ever heard of it,” Freed said. “But one rare disease messed with the wrong mother.” Freed said she has raised million to help with research for the cure and will need an additional million, in order to let Maxwell and many others continue to enjoy life. “I want Maxwell to have every opportunity that children should have in this life,” Freed said. “When he is having a good day, I just try and soak him in as much as I can. A crash near Knoxville, Tennessee, spilled more than 17 tons of M&M's onto an interstate ramp.Police said they responded to the tractor-trailer crash on the Interstate 40 east exit ramp around 5:32 a.m. Friday.Candy company Mars Wrigley said the truck was transporting the candy from a manufacturing plant in Cleveland, Tennessee. Police believe that the driver of the tractor-trailer, whom they did not name, swerved to miss hitting something on the exit ramp.The truck then plowed into a ditch and hit the concrete barrier on the left shoulder before rolling onto its passenger side. It came to rest after it clipped a second tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder.The Knoxville Fire Department responded because crews had to remove the driver from the cab of the overturned truck. Research shows the number of mass shootings has created an increased level of anxiety for a growing number of people. That’s the case for Mila Johns, who doesn’t leave her Maryland home as much as she used to. Johns feels defenseless and gripped by fear that she could become the next victim of a mass shooting. “I've changed my day-to-day routine,” she says. “I don't go to the movies. When we go out, I know where the exits are. I sit with my back to the wall. Sometimes it's easier to just not deal with it and stay home.” When she does go out, Johns went as far as buying a trauma pack—which includes trauma pads, sterile gloves, duct tape, bandages, dressing and antiseptic—to take with her. Johns’ 13-year-old daughter also carries on her backpack when she goes to school. “Sadly, that's where she's most likely to have to use it, it feels” Johns says. “And that's just heartbreaking.” Johns knows some people may feel she's overreacting, but she points out that research shows the amount of mass shootings in the U.S. this year has outpaced the number of days. That's according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group. It qualifies mass shootings as four or more people shot or killed, excluding the shooter. A Phoenix couple is accused of forcing a day laborer at gunpoint to have sex with the female suspect, police say.Phoenix police on April 8 responded to a call from a man saying he was sexually assaulted by a couple at a home. According to court documents, Brenda Acuna Aguero, 39, picked up a day laborer and told the man her husband needed help moving some items at their home. When they arrived at her house, Aguero reportedly told the man that, "it was her fantasy to have sex with a laborer." The victim initially thought Aguero was teasing, but when he realized she wasn't, he told her he was not going to have sex with her. At that point, police say, the woman's husband, 45-year-old Jorge Francisco Valenzuela, came into the room with a rifle. Valenzuela allegedly placed the rifle on the victim's chest, and "told him he was going to have sex with his wife, or he would shoot him."The victim had sex with Aguero as Valenzuela filmed video and took pictures, and allegedly directed the victim to different sexual positions.Police say Valenzuela later stole the victim’s Mexican visa and driver's license, and forced the victim to call his wife so Valenzuela could get her phone number.Valenzuela allegedly told the victim to come back the next day to get his visa and license and have sex with Aguero. He then threatened to send the video to the victim's wife if he didn't comply, records show.Later the same day, Valenzuela allegedly demanded the victim returned to his home for another sexual encounter. When the victim arrived with a friend, Valenzuela sent the pictures to the victim’s wife.The victim contacted police, who arrested Valenzuela and Aguero at their home.
