The United States has reached another grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll has surpassed 170,000, Johns Hopkins data showed Monday morning.On Sunday alone, deaths in the U.S. rose by over 480, according to a Reuters tally, with Florida, Texas and Louisiana reporting the most fatalities.The U.S. continues to lead the world in deaths and the number of cases reported, with at least 5.4 million people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in the country. Johns Hopkins shows the next highest country is Brazil, with over 3.3 million diagnosed and 107,000 dead.Citing a national ensemble forecast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last Thursday that estimates show the U.S. could reach 200,000 deaths from COVID-19 by Labor Day weekend.The head of the CDC says the pandemic could become even more dire in the months to come. Director Robert Redfield told WebMD that “this could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we’ve ever seen.”The reason? Redfield points to the combination of the COVID-19 surge and flu season. The Trump campaign has dropped a central part of its lawsuit that seeks to delay the certification of election results in Pennsylvania, the state which proved to be the tipping point for Joe Biden in clinching the presidency.On Sunday, the Trump campaign dropped a portion of a lawsuit that alleged that more than 600,000 mail-in and absentee ballots were processed without Republican poll-watchers present. The claim has been a central part of President Donald Trump's argument that the 2020 election has been beset by widespread voter fraud.The Trump campaign's lawsuit now only focuses on claims that Republicans were "illegally disadvantaged" because some voters in Democratic-leaning counties were afforded the ability to fix mistakes on their mail-in ballots, a process called "curing." The Washington Post reports that the issue would likely only affect a small number of votes.Ballot curing is a process that takes place in several states. According to The Associated Press, there is no provision in Pennsylvania state law that prevents counties from affording voters the opportunity to cure ballots.Biden currently holds a lead of about 70,000 votes over Trump, with nearly all of the votes counted.Despite his campaign's altered lawsuit, Trump on Sunday continued to claim on Twitter — without providing evidence — that poll watchers "were thrown out of vote counting rooms in many of our States."Late Sunday evening, Trump tweeted, "I WON THE ELECTION!" a claim that quickly prompted Twitter to add a clarification to his message clarifying that "official sources have called this election differently." 1622

The toy run in December is usually one of the big ways Children's Hospital Colorado gets donated toys. But because of COVID-19, the supply of toys is down considerably. So the hospital reached out to some riders, and Sunday, they got a special delivery to help replenish that supply.Kids at Children's Hospital know when they hear those Harley engines roar, toys are on the way."Any motorcycles coming up to the hospital, the kids plaster themselves the windows. They love to see the bikes riding up," volunteer Bob Cuculich said."That's why we do it. It's things like this that make it all worthwhile," organizer Eddie Dane said.But it's not December when this toy run usually happens."Because of COVID this year, the hospital reached out to Rocky Mountain Harley Davidson, because we're a sponsor to the toy run and have been for years," Dane said.Dozens of bikers answered the last minute call to help."They're not reusing toys. So we are are going to replenish their supply and do the best we can to get them some more toys to last them until December," Dane said.They didn't know how many bikers would show. They just knew they needed to try to help the kids."There's a huge need," Cuculich said.But the roars were there, filling up the bins, and they hope more toys can be brought. Just no stuffed animals right now."Plush toys right now, they are just too hard to keep clean, and infection control just makes it a challenge to be able to give those to the kids," Cuculich added.The bikers hope this special delivery makes the kids happy and lasts until the main ride in December. A YouGov study conducted this year says a third of people ages 18-24 aren’t sure our planet is round."If you believe we live on a globe, I know you're deceived." Welcome to the Flat Earth International Conference. “NASA has obviously lied to us on numerous occasions,” says Wendell, a conference attendee.Most of the people gathered at the conference held in Denver, Colorado believe Americans live on a lie. The flat Earth believers think pictures of the earth are fake and astronauts are actors. Social media sites like YouTube have made the flat earth theory more available in recent years. Some of those accounts have tens of thousands of followers."If you do trust your senses, you're seeing things different than what you're being fed," says Debra Auden, who traveled from Texas to the conference.Dr. Ka Chun Yu, the curator of space science at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, says he was really surprised when he heard about the number of flat-earthers."We've known for over 2,000 years that the earth is more or less a sphere, a ball or a round shape."This is how the Greeks knew the earth was round. They realized that if you had sticks in the ground and you were able to measure their shadows on the same day, the lengths of the shadows would actually be different," Dr. Yu says.But to flat-earthers, science's facts are fiction. Flat Earth believers say an ice wall keeps us from falling off the surface.So, why do flat-earthers believe there would be such a lie about a round Earth? The romaine lettuce outbreak has many consumers thinking about where their crops are grown.One rooftop greenhouse company in Chicago says their lettuce is safer and longer-lasting.Jenn Frymark, the chief agriculture officer and manager of Gotham Greens, pulls out a head of lettuce and immediately starts to eat it."No, you don't need to wash it,” Frymark says. “We don't have that on our package, but there's no reason for me to wash it. I never wash any of our lettuce at home. It's amazing; nothing touches it; it’s so clean.”Here at Gotham Greens, lettuce is grown differently.  They do it hydroponically. That means it’s grown without soil, but in a nutrient-rich water. Instead of a traditional farm field, this lettuce is grown on rooftop greenhouses.Their space on Chicago's south side is the largest rooftop greenhouse in the country.  Because of the controlled environment, crops can grow in a third of the time of a traditional field.“We're giving this plant everything it wants: the right day temp, the right night temp, the nutrients, CO2 levels, air circulation, the water,” Frymark explains. “I mean, these are very coddled plants and they have everything they need, and they can just grow in this perfect environment and reach maturity very quickly.”Gotham Greens sells to grocery stores in the Chicago and New York metro areas, as well as select Whole Foods stores. The product goes from the greenhouse directly to grocery shelves in a day and a half.The company’s lettuce also lasts longer than the traditional grocery lettuce out here. Frymark says their product can last up to two to three weeks in the fridge. Additionally, Gotham Greens prices are comparable to other organic produce.Frymark also says their method dramatically lowers the risk for foodborne illness.“There [are] no manures, there’s no water sources that could be contaminants,” she says. “We don't have birds and animals getting into the field.”She says the company is expanding and plans to open more rooftop greenhouses in the near future. 2053
