CHICAGO, Ill. – Imagine a window providing a glimpse into the past – Europe in the late 13th century, 1930s America, life during the Revolutionary War. Then imagine that world fitting inside the palm of your hand. That’s what happens inside Jay Kupjack’s workshop. He is literally a giant, towering over his diminutive room recreations. “I guess you could call me a miniaturist, I suppose,” said Kupjack. Krupjack specializes in all things small. “The preferred scale everybody likes is 1/12th,” he explained. “So, it's an inch to a foot. That seems to work out. Not too small. Not too big.” Kupjack is the last of a dynasty of miniature artists. “It's some you know it's deliberate and it's delicate,” said Kupjack. Both his father, Eugene, and brother, Hank, dedicated their lives to the intricate Lilliputian artform. Everything is made by hand. “My brother liked doing ancient stuff,” said Kupjack. “He did Greek Roman, Egyptian. We don't go too far into the present. There's a 1940s diner.” Kupjack’s late father was the primary artist on many of the 68 Thorne rooms that have been on display at the Art Institute of Chicago since the 1930s. “This probably took about a year,” Kupjack said about an interior of a pirate’s cabin. HONG KONG – Hong Kong authorities on Wednesday withdrew an unpopular extradition bill that sparked months of chaotic protests that have since morphed into a campaign for greater democratic change. "As a result of the divided views of the public regarding the (extradition) bill, there have been conflicts in the society," Secretary for Security John Lee told the city's legislature. Lee said the administration decided to suspend the amendment exercise after studying the matter. “For this purpose I wrote to the president of Legco (Legislative Council) to withdraw the notice to resume the second reading of the bill,” Lee said. “And as a result, the Legislative Council meeting stopped handling the bill. Thereafter, the administration stated many times that the revision has come to a halt. For the purpose of spelling out clearly the position of the special administrative region government, in the accordance of Rule 64(2), I formally announce the withdrawal of the bill.” Pro-democracy lawmakers immediately tried to question him but he refused to respond and the assembly's president said the rules did not allow for debate.The long-expected scrapping of the bill was overshadowed by the drama surrounding the release from a Hong Kong prison of the murder suspect at the heart of the extradition case controversy.Chan Tong-kai told reporters after leaving prison that he was willing to turn himself into authorities in Taiwan, where he is wanted for the killing of his girlfriend. "So it was on our receipt and we did pay for it."Another day, she was billed for Red Bull energy drink."Just recently, on the 8th, a Red Bull was added at the end of the shopping cart," she said. "I guess they were thirsty and needed energy and decided to add on a Red Bull."She wonders how many others she's missed.Angel is executive director of a collection of group homes for the disabled, and orders groceries for them several times a week.It's those disabled clients, she says, who are being ripped off.Complaints increase as orders surgeA recent report in USA Today claims a growing number of customers accuse Instacart shoppers of stealing their groceries.Instacart's Facebook page has a number of complaints of similar mystery charges.It was pretty much inevitable that during a pandemic, with so many shoppers now ordering online and so many more people having to be hired to fulfill those orders, that we would see an increase in complaints.Instacart says orders have surged 300% this year, and it has hired tens of thousands of new shoppers to handle the load.It says each are thoroughly checked out before being hired, but says occasional errors and problems do happen.
