BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin called for closer financial ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan while meeting with Fredrick Chien, the head of a Taiwan finance delegation here on Thursday.Jia, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that financial cooperation was crucial for the cross-Straits economic bond. BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- CNC World, the English-language channel of Xinhua News Agency's TV arm, CNC, will reach cable television audiences in Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, according to an agreement signed Friday between CNC and South Africa-based MIH Group.The English-language channel of China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC) will be available to 4 million African families through MIH's cable network.Xinhua President Li Congjun met Koos Bekker, founder of MIH, before the signing of the agreement. Both sides expressed their hope CNC will be a competitive and influential international media organization.On Thursday, Xinhua signed an agreement with Eutelsat Communications to extend the coverage of CNC to all of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, through Eutelsat Communications' Eurobird, Hotbird and W7 satellites.CNC World broadcasts English news programs 24 hours a day and covers breaking news and major political, economic and cultural news from around the world.Launched in 2009, CNC has developed into a television network with satellite services in the Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and Africa.It is also expanding its cable television and new media services and provides news programs to about 300 domestic and overseas television organizations.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) channeled more than 1 billion yuan (about 151.8 million U.S. Dollars) raised by the lottery to public welfare programs in 2010, according to a statement issued by the MCA Tuesday.China's government-run lottery raised 30 billion yuan for public welfare funds in 2010, according to the MCA.Half of the funds were allocated to welfare projects administered by central authorities, including the MCA, and half to welfare projects organized by local governments.The quota for the MCA to use at its own discretion was 1.053 billion yuan, which was mainly directed for improving the welfare of the aged, the disabled, children, and those impacted by natural disasters.Of the 1 billion yuan, 604 million yuan went to providing care and rehabilitation to the aged and the disabled.Additionally, 417 million yuan went to welfare programs for children, including providing care and rehabilitation to disabled orphans, children suffering cerebral palsy, AIDS-impacted children, and providing shelters to homeless juveniles, among others.The rest of the fund went to government procurement of social services, and retrofitting incineration and burial infrastructures in the underdeveloped west and central regions.

LUANDA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said here on Thursday that China would help Angola in diversifying its exports to China as part of the efforts to boost trade relations between the two countries.Zhong made the pledge during his meeting with Angolan Minister of Trade Maria Idalina Valente to explore ways of further expanding trade and economic ties between the two countries.Zhong said China has attached importance to developing ties with Angola, the largest trading partner of China in Africa, and the 2010 visit to Angola by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping brought Sino-Angolan ties to new highs.The Chinese official said crude oil was almost the sole product of Angola which ended up in Chinese markets despite the fact that trade volume between the two countries amounted to some 25 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, and the Chinese government has decided to reduce or waive tariffs on Angolan exports to China from January 1, 2011 to encourage Angolan businessmen to export more products to China, including agricultural produces, fish and other marine products and diamonds.Zhong said China and Angola have made substantial progress in bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, basic infrastructures and agriculture, and the Chinese government has encouraged Chinese enterprises to invest in Angola and make technological transfers to the African country as well.For her part, Maria Idalina Valente said Angola welcomed China's proposal to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation on the basis of the strategic partnerships hammered out during Xi Jinping's visit to Angola.The Angolan minister said the biggest challenge faced by her government is to diversify its oil-dependent economy and to build up industrial and manufacturing capabilities in the national economy.She said Angola is trying to improve its investment conditions and hopes to reach an agreement with China on the protection of investments by the year 2012.The minister said her country is also keen on learning from China's development experiences in setting up special economic zones and zones of processing products for exports.Zhong arrived in Luanda earlier in the day for a two-day work visit to the African country.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to the United States is vital to pushing forward bilateral ties, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhang Yesui said Saturday.In an interview with Chinese journalists in Washington, Zhang said this year marks the 40th anniversary of the rapprochement between the two countries as well as the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century.Zhang noted that China-U.S. relationship is at a critical period, with two countries making strides in vigorously developing cooperation in various areas, while new challenges arise. At such a time, the visit of President Hu next week will be especially meaningful in pushing forward bilateral ties in the new era.China-U.S. relations have maintained general stability and achieved marked progress since the establishment of diplomatic ties, which has become one of the most important bilateral relations in the world, he said.The two countries have conducted constant communication and dialogues, maintained close economic and trade relations, witnessed frequent exchanges of personnel and enjoyed a wide range of cooperation fields.
