The fossil of a large egg dating from the time of the dinosaurs has been found for the first time on the continent of Antarctica. In addition to its large size and unique location, this discovery is also challenging how scientists think about marine births millions of years ago.The details of the egg and its discovery were published this week in the journal Nature. The egg, measuring 11 inches long and 7 inches wide, was found back in 2011 by Chilean scientists, and sat in Chile’s National Museum of Natural History, labeled only as “The Thing.” David Rubilar-Rogers was one of the scientists who discovered the fossil and works at the museum. He reportedly showed it to every geologist who visited the museum, hoping someone could identify it. Julia Clark from the University of Texas at Austin visited in 2018.“I showed it to her and, after a few minutes, Julia told me it could be a deflated egg!” Rubilar-Rogers said. 933

The COVID-19 death of the speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives has raised fears that other members of one of the world's largest legislatures might have been exposed at their swearing-in ceremony last week. A medical examiner announced the cause of death Thursday of 71-year-old Dick Hinch. Hinch was found dead in his home.He was photographed at the outdoor swearing-in wearing a mask improperly, without it covering both his nose and mouth. Dozens reportedly attended without wearing masks at all. Several Republican lawmakers have tested positive after attending an indoor meeting in late November where many attendees didn't wear masks. One Republican representative says Hinch's death may be a result of “peer pressure exerted by those in the Republican Party who refuse to take reasonable precautions."At a news conference Thursday, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a fellow Republican, called Hinch a "tireless leader" and close friend. He then said Hinch's death was a "cautionary tale" about not wearing a mask properly.“For those who are just out there doing the opposite just to make some ridiculous political point, it is horribly wrong,” Sununu said. “Please use your heads. Don’t act like a bunch of children, frankly.”Other state Republicans were harsher in their messaging. Representative William Marsh, a retired doctor, posted on Twitter, “Those in our caucus who refused to take precautions are responsible for Dick Hinch’s death." 1479

The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is answering calls to "defund the police" by creating a new public safety department that will send unarmed social workers instead of police officers in response to some 911 calls. On Monday, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller (D) said his administration would form a new city department, Albuquerque Community Safety, whose personnel would respond to some emergency calls.Albuquerque Community Safety officials will respond to calls of inebriation, homelessness, addiction and mental health. According to Keller's office, the department will be made up of social workers, housing and homelessness specialists, violence prevention and diversion program experts.Officials hope the new department will keep such calls from escalating into violence and will allow police officers to re-focus their efforts to combating and investigating violent crime."We want to send the right resource to the right call," Keller said in a statement. "Especially where a social worker or trained professional can connect people with the services they need, instead of simply taking folks to jail or the hospital, which have been the only choices until now."According to The Washington Post, experts believe that the Albuquerque Community Safety department may be the first of its kind. Though calls to defund police departments have strengthened following the death of George Floyd in May, Keller says the city has been working for two years on to change the way Albuquerque handles some emergency calls.Activists who are calling for cities to defund police departments say that money would be better spent on community outreach. They also say that sending armed police into some emergency situations can escalate situations and lead to violence, especially against racial minorities and people of color. In recent weeks, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in dozens of major cities, calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.Floyd died in police custody after allegedly using a counterfeit bill to buy tobacco while intoxicated. After handcuffing Floyd, bystander video shows a police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, and three other officers face charges in connection with Floyd's death. 2412

The Daily Mail released leaked footage of the fatal Memorial Day arrest of George Floyd, who died while in the custody of Minneapolis Police. The Daily Mail did not indicate how it received the leaked body worn camera videos of the arrest. Prosecutors told CNN they are working to find the source of the leak. Several media outlets have sued prosecutors in order to gain access to the body-worn camera footage from the officers."The prosecution team is not the source of the leak. We will continue to take the strictest precautions to ensure a fair trial," Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said. The Daily Mail said the footage was taken from the body cameras of Thomas Lane and Alex Kueng. Lane and Kueng along with Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao were fired as officers and criminally charged for Floyd’s death. Chauvin is facing the most serious charges, which include second-degree murder. The other three former officers are being charged with aiding and abetting a second degree murder. Chauvin was the officer that held a knee to Floyd’s neck for several minutes, leading to his death. The footage shows officers pointing weapons at Floyd in order to get him to exit his vehicle and put up his hands. The video then shows Floyd pleading with officers not to shoot him.“I'm not going to shoot you,” Lane says. The footage showed Floyd in an apparent struggle with officers as officers repeatedly asked Floyd to sit.As Chauvin laid on Floyd’s neck, Floyd could be heard telling officers, “Tell my kids I love them. I'm dead.”To view the full video, click here. 1572

The FBI continues to warn the American public on cyberattacks and foreign actors who are allegedly working to sow doubt on the upcoming presidential election. This week, the FBI released a statement saying that cyber criminals and foreign actors are attempting to use online platforms to “manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.”These cyber criminals are hoping to sow doubt on the election by saying that data has been “hacked” or “leaked,” the FBI said. Some voter information is generally publicly available, and doesn’t need to be hacked or leaked. While the ballots themselves are secret, absentee ballot requests, names, addresses and similar information is generally public record.Last week, the FBI said that cybercriminals could take advantage of the likelihood several states will need additional time to count ballots due to increased mail-in voting and social distancing protocols. While a delay in results does not indicate any wrongdoing, the FBI warns that foreign actors could attempt to spread misinformation to cause distrust in the system while votes are being tallied.Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The FBI offered the following recommendations to voters:Seek out information from trustworthy sources, such as state and local election officials; verify who produced the content; and consider their intent.Verify through multiple reliable sources any reports about problems in voting or election results, and consider searching for other reliable sources before sharing such information via social media or other avenues. For information about final election results, rely on state and local government election officials.Report potential election crimes—such as disinformation about the manner, time, or place of voting—to the FBI.If appropriate, make use of in-platform tools offered by social media companies for reporting suspicious posts that appear to be spreading false or inconsistent information about election-related problems or results. 3463
