NEW YORK, N.Y. – In a skyscraper, nearly 50 floors above a New York City, a group of women are gathering to ask for more. “We’ve barely budged in two decades,” said Kim Churches, CEO of the American Association of University Women. What’s barely budged are women’s salaries, still lagging far behind what men make in America. That’s where the “Ask For More” workshop campaign is stepping in. The American Association of University Women, along with numerous other groups, are holding free workshops across the country to teach women how to successfully negotiate a higher salary. The goal: to train 10 million women in the next three years. “Women make up half the labor force, yet it is still is a man’s world in how workplace hiring and promotions take place,” Churches said. “And it’s on us to really change them.” The numbers are sobering. For every dollar a man makes, women make an average of 79 cents on the dollar. It’s even worse for minority women: African-American women make 62 cents on the dollar; Hispanic women make 54 cents. “I found myself needing to ask for more money than I think I was getting,” said Samantha Hamidan, who is an immigration lawyer. Hamidan came to one of the workshops in New York City, after recently trying to ask for a raise. “I’m hoping to really be able to parlay these skills into asking for more money at the next position,” she said. RICHMOND, Va., — Hospitalizations and the number of cases connected to the coronavirus are decreasing, according to Henrico-Richmond District Health Director Dr. Danny Avula.Avula and city officials provided an update on the progress surrounding COVID-19 and evictions during a Monday afternoon press conference inside City Council Chambers. Avula said the progress has recently plateaued, but the city is in a better position compared to other states.“The pandemic is still very real. COVID-19 is real and what we don’t want to happen is that COVID-19 catches us slipping,” Mayor Levar Stoney said. There have been more than 2,200 positive cases reported in the city and 29 deaths since the start of the pandemic. No Richmonders have died from complications to the virus within the past two weeks, Stoney said.Dr. Avula said they are investigating a cluster of cases that stemmed from a party.About 50 people attended the party indoors and four people have tested positive, Avula said. He would not reveal where the party was held.“Now we are seeing the immediate impact of that. I think that serves as a cautionary tale that the virus is still out there. It’s going to spread when people congregate and we need to make really wise decisions at the degree we do that,” Avula explained.Richmonders can visit RVAstrong.org to find resources on testing. This article was written by Brendan King for WTVR. 1420

The game was suspended at halftime.Akron Public Schools Superintendent David W. James issued a statement: “We are grateful there was no one more seriously hurt tonight at the City Series football game at Ellet CLC. The shooting that occurred inside the stadium is great cause for alarm, and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”Board President Patrick Bravo issued a statement as well: "Our first concern, of course, is for the recovery of the victims, but let's be very clear about what happened. This was an act of violence brought right into a football stadium with parents and children out to enjoy the return of fall sports. As a community, we must work together to figure out a solution to gun violence. Our children deserve much better. Our community deserves much better."Anyone with information is asked to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490. This article was written by WEWS. 1905

A man convicted in the 1971 Black Liberation Army assassination of two NYPD officers will be released on parole in October, the widow and daughter of NYPD Patrolman Joseph Piagentini told Scripps station WPIX-TV.A state source confirmed the decision late Tuesday afternoon, saying 68-year-old Anthony Bottom, who now goes by Jalil Abdul Mutaqim, has been granted "an open release date of October 20, 2020 or earlier."Bottom's been in state prison since 1977, more than 43 years."I am very angry," widow Diane Piagentini said about the decision.Piagentini accused Bottom of being the most ruthless of the killers, who lured the two patrolmen, one Black and one White, to Harlem with a phony 911 call. Both NYPD officers were fathers. The three BLA members had come to New York from California specifically to assassinate police officers. When the officers responded to the housing project, they were ambushed from behind with a fusillade of bullets.Bottom shot Piagentini’s partner, 33-year-old officer Waverly Jones, first. Jones, who was Black, was shot five times."He (Bottom) shot him in the head and down his spine," Diane Piagentini recalled.Piagentini said Bottom then turned his gun on her 27-year-old husband, who had 22 bullet holes in his body when he was pronounced dead.“He (Bottom) used Joe's gun to complete the killing because they were running out of bullets," Piagentini said of her husband’s death. Two years ago, Piagentini had unsuccessfully fought the controversial release of Bottom's accomplice, Herman Bell.Parole commissioners at the time were staying true to an Executive Order from Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2011, which told the board to be "forward thinking" and focus more on a prisoner's rehabilitation instead of the original crime.During Bell's later parole hearings, he showed remorse. The third convicted killer, Albert Washington, had died in prison.Bottom has been in police custody for more than 49 years, ever since his arrest in California in August 1971. He was sent to New York State prison in 1977.A Refinery29 article published earlier this year said he was diagnosed with COVID-19 during the pandemic.A Sullivan County judge ordered a new hearing for Bottom in August. The prisoner appeared before the parole board on Sept. 11.Diane Piagentini had written to the board in August this year, begging for Bottom not to be released."He's a BLA militant," she said. "He wants to kill cops. He has not been rehabilitated."Piagentini wasn't allowed to face parole commissioners because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.Despite a move to release elderly prisoners during this pandemic, Piagentini said she doesn't believe that's the motivation for Bottom's release."It has nothing to do with COVID. It has nothing to do with his age."Patrolman's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, issued a statement to PIX11 Tuesday evening slamming the Parole Board decision, saying laws and mandates from Governor Cuomo and the state legislature have allowed for the latest in a long line of cop killers getting released."They knew that changing the parole guidelines would unleash more vicious killers like Anthony Bottom back onto our streets," Lynch said. "They have chosen to stand with the murderers, cold-blooded assassins, and radicals bent on overthrowing our society. We have now seen 16 cop-killers released in less than three years. We will continue to see more unless New Yorkers wake up and speak out against the madness being done in their names."Bottom had joined the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s, after the assassination of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.He believed that armed resistance was necessary to address systemic racism in society. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday the state's formula that will determine which school districts can reopen to students in September. The formula will be implemented between August 1 and August 7, based on COVID-19 data in each region. Schools in regions in Phase Four of their reopening at that time will be able to reopen to students if the region's daily infection rate remains 5% or lower over a 14-day average. After August 1, schools will close if their regional infection rate is greater than 9% over a seven-day average.Once reopening, schools must follow guidelines specific to their districts. The New York State Health Department has released its own guidelines, which will be used by districts to develop plans. The health department's guidelines include masks and PPE whenever students or staff cannot maintain social distancing (six feet of separation). It also includes guidelines on cleaning, screening, tracing, transportation and food service. You can read the guidelines here: Recovering, rebuilding, and renewing the spirit of our schools school reopening guidance from Adam Francis WKBW's Megan Erbacher first reported this story. 1182
