BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices declined at a faster rate last week as weather remained good and local governments stepped up efforts to ensure supplies.According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Tuesday, the prices of 18 types of vegetables for the week ending November 21 declined 2.6 percent from the previous week, and the pace of the fall accelerated from the previous week's 0.8 percent. The ministry said that radishes, cucumbers and celery were among the vegetables that witnessed the largest fall in prices, dropping 11.1 percent, 10 percent and 7 percent respectively week-on-week.This was good news for the Chinese government as it strove to ease inflation and keep rising prices in check.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation, surged to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the CPI, soared 10.1 percent last month. However, according to the MOC report, China's meat and cooking oil prices during the period of November 15-21 edged up because of rising demand. Prices of pork and beef rose 2.2 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, week-on-week.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman on Wednesday said Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to Washington later this month will be "exciting and historic.""State visit is the highest level of welcome that is accorded to a foreign head of state. Hu's state visit is a very exiting and historic time in U.S.-China relationship," Huntsman told a press briefing on Wednesday.Hu will pay a state visit to the United States from Jan.18 to 21 at the invitation of U.S. President Barack Obama."It is the first time that the two heads of state meet when they represent the two largest economies...Their influence is derived from the world, not form a region," Huntsman said. The ambassador said it was noteworthy that over the years Obama and Hu had met 7 times and developed a "friendly, cordial and confident" relationship. He hailed efforts on both sides to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive U.S.-China relationship, citing the high-level meetings like Strategic and Economic Dialogue, Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade as well as some cabinet-level visits like Defense Secretary Robert Gates' just concluded trip to Beijing. In a relationship that is as mature, direct and candid as U.S.-China relationship, there will inevitably be some areas of disagreements, Huntsman said."Divergences are largely outweighed by areas of convergences," he said.Ambassador said the United States and China would increasingly find common ground."As both countries are on the world stage, they will see a similar level of responsibility in terms of problems and deal realistically with the issues that confront the world, ranging from Iran nuclear issues and Korean Peninsula tensions to economic rebalance and climate change," Huntsman said.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in charge of culture and publicity has called for innovations in reforming China's culture sector and for greater efforts in promoting the development of related industries.Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday while addressing a meeting of local publicity officials, according to a statement given to Xinhua on Saturday.Authorities should work for creating a "cultural atmosphere that improves scientific development and promotes social harmony," the official said.He added that efforts should be made to improve people's understanding of the importance and necessity of transforming China's economic growth mode and of the CPC Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015).The Proposal was adopted last month at the Fifth Plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee.Further, Liu urged authorities to map out a blueprint for the reform and development of China's culture sector, in accordance with that proposal.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- "I can't afford an apartment, a car or a wife, but it never occurred to me until now that I can't even afford vegetables or fruit," said Gao Lei, a 30-year-old renter in Beijing."I went to a grocery store yesterday only to find that even apples, the cheapest fruit, are sold for 4 yuan half a kilogram, doubling the price from two months ago," said Gao.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. The hike was mainly due to a 10.1-percent surge in food prices. Food prices have a one-third weighting in China's CPI calculation. An employee puts bags of sugar on to shelves at a supermarket in Beijing. The price of the commodity has doubled in China since the beginning of the year. Though Gao is slightly exaggerating his hardship during the current inflation, price rises, particularly of life necessities such as grains and vegetables, do force Chinese low-income groups into a rough time.Jiang Peng's family is hard-hit, as he and his wife both are laid-off workers and have two daughters in college. Jiang, however, has a new job, working as a janitor in Jinan-based Shandong Economic University.Jiang's family makes some 24,000 yuan (3,600 U.S. dollars) a year, half of which goes to paying tuition for their two college girls, with the majority of the rest covering their daughters' living expenses."We spend each penny carefully, because we try to save as much as possible for the kids. Now as price goes up, we find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet," said Jiang. The only vegetable Jiang and his wife have these days is cabbage, since it is the cheapest of all vegetables.Jiang said prices have dropped slightly due to government price control efforts, but it is not making a big difference yet, and prices of some daily necessities remain high, not showing signs of a decrease."We have fried dough sticks for breakfast, and even its price rose from 3.5 yuan per half a kilogram to 4 yuan, never falling again," said Jiang. For the poorest families, the government already made decisions to dole out temporary subsidies to help them cope with rising living costs.Jin Hong, mother of a fifth-grader in the city of Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province, now has to pay 15 percent more for her son's lunch at school. Jin's household monthly income stands at less than 1,000 yuan."I hope there will be no more increases, otherwise I will not be able to afford the school meals for my son," said Jin.p Jin's family is entitled to a 100 yuan subsidy given by the local government, which is due on Dec. 10. "Now, we are counting on the subsidy," she said.Students from poor families are also feeling the pinch, and they are paid great attention in the Chinese government's ongoing price control efforts. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued a statement on Nov. 23 detailing various measures to institute price controls, including keeping prices stable in student cafeterias. Also, an earlier statement issued by the State Council, China's Cabinet, ordered local governments to offer subsidies to student canteens and increase allowances for poor students. He Ming, a student from a low-income family at Nanjing-based Southeast University, now sneaks out of classes earlier to make it to the cafeteria before all low-priced dishes are sold out.Low priced dishes are the vegetables, since meat is usually more expensive in China, and they are priced at one yuan per dish."In order not to only swallow rice for the meal, I have to quit part of the class. Though the cafeteria still serves low-price dishes, despite price hikes of vegetables lately, they serve less."He has a monthly living allowance of 300 yuan, which is given by his parents.

BELGRADE, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Celebrating 30 years of cooperation and fraternal relations between the capitals of Serbia and China, an art exhibit entitled "The Beauty of Beijing" was opened in the Old Palace in Belgrade on Tuesday.Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas extended a welcome to the visiting Beijing delegation, underscoring years of cooperation and cultural exchanges."For us the bridge we are going to build together is important, along with our cultural components which will complement our desire for Belgrade in 2020 to be the European 'cultural capital'," said Djilas, making reference to the 1,507-meter bridge over the Danube River to be constructed by Chinese firms. The total value of the contract is 170 million Euros and its completion date is 2013.The original cooperation agreement between Beijing and Belgrade was signed in October 1980, with the aim of boosting cooperation in the fields of economics, urban planning, utilities, health, education, culture, tourism and sport.Ma Zhipeng, senior advisor to the city of Beijing, said cooperation between the twin cities has been expanding over the last three decades. He said the art exhibit, with its 50 paintings divided into four thematic sections, would allow the citizens of Belgrade to become more familiar with the Chinese capital."On the occasion of the festive celebrations, in addition to the exhibition, the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce and Beijing signed an agreement on cooperation, which will provide a platform for economic cooperation between the two cities," said Ma.In addition to the art exhibit, the Orchestra "Huaxia" performed a collection of classic Chinese musical pieces with traditional instruments.
