SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — October historically spells fire danger for San Diego and Cal Fire is asking everyone to be ready.The Cedar Fire started Oct. 25, 2003, and burned 280,278 acres. The Witch Creek-Guejito and Harris Fires started Oct. 21, 2007, and burned 288,430 acres. People lost their lives in both fires.Cal Fire Captain Issac Sanchez said it's extremely important San Diegans are prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice. "Be ready to evacuate, have your defensible clearance space done. Not only do it, but do it responsibly. Do it first thing in the morning when temperatures are low and humidity levels are relatively high," Sanchez said.The weather contributes to a dangerous cocktail, increasing October's potency."You have that combination of fuel and weather really giving a one-two punch to us pretty consistently," Sanchez said.The Valley Fire in September reminded San Diegans of how quickly a spark can grow out of control and how fast evacuations can happen.Next week's weather doesn't look good, according to Sanchez. "It's going to be warm, it's going to be dry and there's going to be some sort of wind blowing from the east," says Sanchez. "That's the kind of combination that gets folks nervous around here."The good news is firefighters are coming home from working in northern California and will be standing by, in addition to Marines and Sailors."A strike team of Type 6 Fire Engines is just getting back to San Diego from the Creek Fire in Fresno," Sanchez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 100 homeless people will soon have a warm place to sleep at night. Thursday morning, the fourth bridge shelter opened its doors in East Village. Each shelter focuses on a different group of the homeless population. The new shelter, located on 17th St and Imperial Ave., is specific to high-risk people including the disabled, elderly, or those with medical conditions. “I can’t tell you in words, but it feels so good to get off this concrete,” says David Tharp, who has been living on the streets for the past three years. Our stuff is not going to be stolen. No one is going to attack us in the middle of the night.” There will be a total of 128 beds offered at the shelter. Nearly 20 agencies will be on-site at times providing services to fit individual needs. The city has now opened four shelters in the last two years, following the large Hepatitis A outbreak, bringing nearly 800 homeless people off the streets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – One person is dead following a shooting at a Midway-area adult store, according to police.The shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. on the 3600 block of Midway Drive at Kemper Street, near the back of the Home Depot.When they arrived, authorities found the body of a 65-year-old woman inside the store. The woman had trauma to her upper body, according to police. Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was reportedly assaulted while inside the business.The possible suspect was described as a white man last seen wearing a navy blue shirt and navy blue pants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of the top brass at the San Diego Sheriff’s Department is facing an allegation of inappropriate conduct, Team 10 confirmed.A San Diego Sheriff’s spokesperson confirmed that Assistant Sheriff Rich Miller received a complaint and released this statement to Team 10:"The Department has received a complaint alleging inappropriate conduct by Mr. Miller. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously.  As a result, an investigation is underway.  Mr. Miller is currently using accumulated leave time until his planned retirement date.  We cannot comment further based on the pending investigation." 686

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New information from the Census Bureau shows that San Diego’s housing growth isn’t keeping up with our growth in population.Within the year spanning between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, San Diego saw its population increase by nearly 13,000 people.According to the Census Bureau, though the population has increased, the number of new homes being built is actually slowing down.When you compare housing growth between 2000 and 2007 and housing growth between 2010 and 2017, San Diego County saw a major decrease in growth of new housing. San Diego was also ranked the 11th most populated city in the United States, according to the new data.
