SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego-based group of environmental activists launched a 100-day campaign today calling on the region's congressional representatives to support the so-called Green New Deal to mitigate the effects and exacerbation of climate change.San Diego 350 hopes to convince Reps. Susan Davis and Scott Peters, D- San Diego, and Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, to support the resolution by inundating their offices with calls and postcards from constituents between now and the August congressional recess.Reps. Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, and Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, are already co-sponsors of House Resolution 109, which supports the drafting and adoption of a Green New Deal. The proposal would reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a net-zero level, invest in infrastructure and shepherd the country's economic and energy sectors away from fossil fuels and coal by 2030.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, first proposed the concept and introduced the resolution in February."Over 80 years ago, (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and the Democratic Party created a bold plan to address the biggest economic crisis our nation hadever faced,'' said Masada Disenhouse, San Diego 350's executive director. "Thestakes are even higher now.''San Diego 350 organized demonstrations at Peters' and Hunter's offices in February to call on them to support he proposal. The organization has also held sit-ins and delivered petitions to members of the county's delegation asking them to co-sponsor the resolution.To date, Davis, Peters and Hunter have not done so. Last month, Peters proposed a divergent plan to stem the tide of climate change, which he called a climate playbook. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage suspect was behind bars today in connection with the 7-month-old slaying of another young man in a Southcrest- area neighborhood.Raheem Malik Meals, 18, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering 20-year-old Ismail Abouabid on Jan. 15, according to San Diego police.Patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident in the 4000 block of Boston Avenue shortly before noon that day found Abouabid mortally wounded behind the wheel of a parked vehicle, bleeding from the head, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Abouabid, who had recently relocated to San Diego from Erie, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.Witnesses told investigators three male teenagers had been with the victim just prior to his death and walked off toward a nearby park just before he was found.Police initially reported that Abouabid had been shot to death but later backed off from those statements.``The mechanism for the (victim's) injury is not being released at this time,'' Dobbs said Tuesday.The lieutenant also declined to disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying or reveal what led investigators to identify Meals as a suspect in the case. 1186

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Customs and Border Protection agents, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, intercepted two smuggling boats, arrested six people and seized roughly 528 pounds of methamphetamine and 941 pounds of marijuana off the coast of San Diego over the weekend, authorities reported Tuesday.The first apprehension happened around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, when agents detected a panga-style boat traveling northbound off the San Diego coast, according to CBP officials. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour helped CBP agents chase down the boat, which was eventually halted around 12 nautical miles west of Oceanside when agents fired shots into the suspects' engine.Agents arrested four people from the roughly 28-foot boat and seized 528 pounds of methamphetamine.The second seizure happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the crew on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock responded to a report of a suspicious vessel and boarded a fishing boat that was docked at the San Diego Bay channel.CBP agents also responded to the vessel and found two people who did not have proper documentation to be in the United States. The agents took the two into custody and towed the boat to U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego, where a canine team allegedly found 941 pounds of marijuana wrapped in cellophane packages in the boat's center console. 1347

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County environmental health officials issued a water contact closure Friday along the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to sewage-contaminated water. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the closure Friday afternoon following rainfall this week that caused contaminated water in the Tijuana River to flow into U.S. waterways. County officials regularly issue beach closures after rainstorms due to contaminated flows from the river. The closure extends along the shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border to the southern end of Seacoast Drive. County officials have placed water contact closure signs to alert beachgoers of the water's contamination. The signs will remain in place until water sampling meets state health standards. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a large commercial building in the Morena area Friday, causing extensive damage and sending a thick plume of smoke into the air near Mission Bay.The blaze in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard erupted about 5:40 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.Police closed down the north-south street to through traffic while firefighters worked to subdue the intense flames.Crews were still working to get the blaze under control as of 6:30 p.m. and trying to get inside the two-story structure to check on a report there might be someone inside, according to SDFRD public affairs.There were no immediate reports of injuries. 677
