A female teacher at a Pennsylvania middle school is on administrative leave after she could be heard on video calling a black man the "N-word" and using other racist language after a fender bender in the school parking lot.The incident happened Thursday at Drexel Hill Middle School, Upper Darby School District Superintendent Daniel McGarry said.The woman has been a teacher there since 2008, he said."Right now, this person is on administrative leave without pay," McGarry told CNN. "We're going to pursue it vigorously. According to the district, the student population of its schools is increasingly diverse: 46.6% are African American, 31.76% are white, 14.4% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 5.62% are Hispanic and 1% are other.The video, posted on Facebook, appears to begin after the accident and as a man says, "I guess she's done cursin' and screaming."The woman cuts him a look as she rubs the bumper of the truck she was driving. She can be heard saying the man is "probably on welfare too."The man says, "Not even a little bit. Six figures a year, ma'am."The teacher, who has not been publicly identified, calls that BS."It's because I'm young and I'm black, the reason why you would say that," he says."That's right, because you're black," she replies, as she continues to rub the bumper."Probably on welfare," he says, repeating her words."That's right," she answers. "Always looking to milk the system. And you see me, a white woman, so you think I got money.""Not even a little bit. Don't even look like you got it," he says. Cotton uses the app at least twice a week to help him while he's on the go. Rather than asking someone at the store for help, Cotton says this makes him feel more independent. A 9th grade student at Buffalo’s International Preparatory School in New York says she was forced to remove her hijab by an assistant principal.“He was like, ‘Take that thing off your head, you’re not Muslim or Arabian.’” That’s what Najah Travis claims assistant principal Marin Lyonga told her after pulling her to the side on Monday.She refused, and called her mother. When Luvita Franklin arrived she said she was speaking with a second assistant principal, Patrick Doyle, who told her it’s district policy to provide proof of practicing the Muslim faith to wear a hijab.In a recording of the conversation played by Franklin for our cameras Doyle can be heard saying “It is a district policy.” When Franklin asked whether it was new he replied, “It’s not new.”We send a transcript to representative from the school district. Buffalo Schools chief of staff Darren Brown says it is not a policy for the district that students are required to provide proof of religion.He says administrators are always free to inquire more about students’ religions and ask questions to understand more. After investigating this incident, Brown says the assistant principals asked to see proof of religion because they were familiar with Travis from a number of interactions, but had never seen Travis in a hijab before.Brown says administrators were worried about it being seen as offensive to other students, and wanted to ensure the hijab was not being worn as a fashion statement.“It wouldn’t matter if it was the first or the 5th time you’ve seen her wearing it, once she put it on her head, it shouldn’t have mattered,” said Franklin.In the recording with Doyle, he can be heard saying, “All she needs to do is bring a note saying she’s a part of the religion from somebody that’s a member of the (indistinguishable)…as long as that’s done, at that point she can wear it as much as she wants. Nobody will ever stop her. We fully support all religions.”Imam Pasha Syed at Jami Masjid says hijabs are not exclusive to the Muslim faith. Anyone, at any time can wear one. He also says even Muslims don’t wear hijabs daily.“It takes time. It doesn’t happen from day one. Some people may have to grow into it. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133
