A 22-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man has been charged in the shooting death of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, the Jackson County prosecutor announced Thursday. During an afternoon press conference, authorities announced that Ryson B. Ellis, 22, has been charged with LeGend's murder. He faces one count each of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.Ellis was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday and booked in the Tulsa County Jail in Oklahoma.A woman who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, identified in a KCPD probable cause statement as the sister of LeGend's father, told police she had a child with Ellis, who she alleged had assaulted her a few days before the deadly shooting.After that incident, which didn't involve LeGend, the woman's brothers, including LeGend's father, confronted Ellis at his residence, where an altercation ensued.The woman also told KCPD investigators that she received threatened messages from Ellis through social media after Legend's murder.LeGend's family was on hand at a press conference to announce the charges.Charron Powell, LeGend’s mother, said that she is “grateful that we are in the steps to justice,” but also expressed remorse for her son’s suspected killer and the culture of violence in Kansas City.“This is a lose situation, for my family, and including his,” Powell said of Ellis. “We have to take it a step farther and calm the violence down.” BREAKING: 22-year-old Ryson B. (KGTV) - Naval Criminal Investigative Services announced Friday the arrests of two additional Marines and a sailor, bringing the total of troops suspected of human smuggling and drug-related offenses to 19. Sixteen of the service members were taken into custody Thursday at Camp Pendleton during Battalion formation, a gathering of some 800 troops, U.S. Marine Corps officials said. An additional eight troops were questioned about drug offenses unrelated to the arrests, said Maj. Kendra Motz, 1st Marine Division Communication Strategy Operations Director. Two of the detainees were later arrested, said officials.“The Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment will act within his authority to hold the Marines accountable at the appropriate level, should they be charged,” said Motz. (KGTV) -- The Department of Homeland Security is requesting US troops build temporary facilities to house up to 7,500 detained migrant adults, according to ABC News. The department would “loan and erect” the tents in support of ICE, the Pentagon told ABC. "DOD will not provide detention or custodial support for detained aliens at these ICE detention facilities," a spokesperson for the Pentagon said. "ICE is responsible for detention or custodial support."RELATED: TSA to deploy hundreds, including air marshals, to borderThe tents were requested at six locations along the border, but specific locations are unclear at this time. The announcement comes as the Pentagon shifted .5 billion to a counter-drug account that will be used to build roughly 80 miles of border wall, according to ABC.
