BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is pushing for the restructuring of major state-run news portals - including cctv.com and xinhuanet.com - to allow them to "establish a modern enterprise system," launch initial public offerings (IPO) and abandon the "iron rice bowl" concept.Ten major news portals are involved in a pilot restructuring project: the websites of state broadcasters China Central Television, Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, Beijing's qianlong.com, Tianjin's enorth.com.cn, Shandong's dzwww.com, Shanghai's eastday.com and Zhejiang's zjol.com.cn among others.The websites are currently affiliated to news organizations run by central and local governments.According to a symposium on the restructuring work Monday in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, the restructuring plans for people.com.cn and xinhuanet.com have been approved.The pilot project, initiated last October, covers shareholding reform, establishment of a modern enterprise system and IPOs to "strengthen the competitiveness" of the news portals.According to the symposium, the website operators have actively engaged in the development of search engines, cell phone news services, cell phone TV services, Internet TV, e-commerce, online cartoon games and other new media areas, which have strengthened their capacities.The operating income of people.com.cn and xinhuanet.com have witnessed "big growth," the symposium said.Domestic commercial news portals like sina.com.cn and sohu.com are listed overseas.The step is part of Chinese government's efforts to reform China's cultural industry in a bid to promote Chinese media and cultural enterprises' global influence and boost the nation's soft power.

NANJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- One fisherman was confirmed dead and 16 others were still missing after two boats capsized Wednesday night at sea off Lianyungang city in east China's Jiangsu Province, local maritime bureau said Friday.Rescuers discovered the body of the fisherman Friday afternoon, and were still searching for the missing people, although their chances of survival were slim, according to Lianyungang's sea search and rescue center.Of the 17, seven are from Anhui Province and the others from Sheyang County, Jiangsu.At around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a boat registered in Jiangsu capsized because of strong gale and high tide about 200 sea miles from Lianyungang, throwing 12 fishermen on board into the water.The other boat, with 11 people on board and in the same fleet, capsized as it attempted to save them.By Thursday noon, of the 23 fishermen, six have been rescued by a nearby fishing boat.

CHICAGO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chicago-based Boeing Company reported on Wednesday that its first-quarter net earnings were 519 million U.S. dollars, down 15 percent from 610 million dollars in the same quarter last year, citing the health care legislation charge.The aerospace and defense giant said in its first quarterly financial report that total revenues for the first three months were 15.22 billion dollars, down from 16.50 billion dollars in the prior year quarter while the earnings per share was down to 70 cents from 86 cents one year ago.Boeing indicated that the results for the quarter reflect solid performance across core businesses and a previously disclosed 20 cents charge per share on health care legislation, while the year- ago quarter results were reduced by 31 cents per share on a charge due to poor market conditions in commercial airplanes."With clear progress on the 787 and 747-8, solid financial performance and marked improvement in our customer outlook, we continue to draw on the positive momentum we saw at the end of 2009," said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer.Boeing's earnings guidance for 2010 is pegged at 3.50 dollars to 3.80 dollars per share, reduced from 3.70 to 4.00 per share due to the charge on health care legislation. Total firm orders for the 787 at quarter-end were 866 airplanes from 57 customers.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met here Thursday with President of Malaysian Senate Wong Foon Meng, vowing to enhance parliamentary exchanges.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China and Malaysia were close neighbors, and the bilateral ties had further developed since the two countries forged the strategic and cooperative partnership in 2004.The two countries had strengthened political trust, economic and trade cooperation, personnel exchanges, and coordination in international and regional affairs, he said.Malaysia is a member of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) and forged diplomatic ties with China in 1974."Expanding relations with Malaysia is in the interest of the two peoples and conducive to regional peace and prosperity, and will push forward the cooperation between China and the ASEAN," Wu said.He noted the NPC had maintained sound relations with the Malaysian parliament, but still closer cooperation and exchanges in different forms were needed.Wong Foon Meng voiced his hope to promote exchanges between the parliament members of the two countries.Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, also met with Wong Foon Meng Thursday afternoon.
