SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Call them the ghosts of summer vacations past: two mostly empty cruise ships remain anchored off the coast of San Diego, waiting for the green light to resume operations as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.Celebrity’s Millennium and Eclipse cruise ships have been anchored in San Diego since March, when the CDC suspended cruise ship sailings around the country March 14. That order has been extended to at least July 24.Several cruise ship companies have announced voluntary delays until September.After thousands of passengers disembarked from the Eclipse in late March, test results came back showing several passengers were COVID-19 positive.More than a month later, in May, 63 passengers remained quarantined on the Eclipse with hundreds of crew members.A third ship, the Disney Wonder, was anchored in San Diego for the first few months of the pandemic, but departed May 30, said Brianne Page, a public information officer for the Port of San Diego.For now, the Millennium and Eclipse are ghosts of their former selves. Instead, he's set up a Christmas tree farm in the parking lot of Grossmont Center, with a pop-up eatery right next to it. "We're just trying to stay busy and trying to make money to keep the employees working and myself to keep playing the bills," Boghosian said. This — just one of the unique things happening in 2020 at malls across the county — which normally are preparing all sorts of events to welcome holiday shoppers."We feel with our outdoor setting, our big, wide-open spaces to walk, shopping here is as safe as it could be in this time," said Trevor Moore, marketing director at Grossmont Center.Moore said the mall had to cancel traditional events, including Santa's appearances, in exchange for a series of socially distant ones. On Thursday, it held a blood drive with hundreds of appointments.But Moore said the holiday decorations are up, the music is playing, and the mall's giving out free masks.Larger retailers, such as Best Buy and Target, have spread out their Black Friday specials over days or weeks.
