So how do you Make it in San Diego on Tax Day? We found an expert who can help.It's the worst sticker shock imaginable. You're used to a little something back from the government every year in the form of a refund, but suddenly you find yourself with a hefty bill. And the feds don't look kindly on late payments."I always tell people: if you owe money, the first step is don't panic," says Ariel Jurow-Kleiman an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of San Diego. Jurow-Kleiman should know. She's helped people in this situation many times before as a tax attorney and now teaches tax law at USD. Here's the problem."The Federal tax laws were changed in a way that will dramatically affect California residents," explains Professor Kleiman.And that's probably what hit you, too. Many itemized deductions you used to get were either tossed out or capped. "It used to be you could deduct all of your state income taxes," adds Jurow-Kleiman.Now those California income taxes are capped at ,000. And your house, the interest on the mortgage was capped too - double whammy. So, if you owe, here's the first step: do not put off filing. "Absolutely, it is so important to file your taxes on time even if you think you're going to owe," says Professor Kleiman, emphasizing the point. There are penalties for filing late: 5% of your tax liability and up to a maximum of 25%. So, let's say you owe 00 and didn't file for a month, that alone will cost you at least an extra . So, file right away, and pay what you can now."There is interest, it fluctuates, right now it's 6%. It compounds daily so every day, every week that you owe there is a little bit more interest that's added on," warns Jurow-Kleiman.That compound interest can accrue quickly but Professor Kleiman says there are options. You could file for an extension and pay the full amount later. Or you could work out an installment agreement but know some fees could be tacked on. In some cases, paying off your taxes with a credit card could be cheaper than the interest from the government."If you're considering owing money to the government versus owing money to a private lender,” adds Professor Kleiman, “It's very often better to borrow money from a private lender and pay your taxes."However, Professor Kleiman adds that’s not always the case. She advises avoiding payday lenders or someone who charges very high-interest rates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Keeping kids active, while also letting them follow their passion, is a top priority for a lot of parents.But often it comes at a cost. A new study from CompareCards.com shows that 46% of parents spend more than ,000 a year on activities for their kids, and 27% spend more than ,000. "As much as we love our kids as parents, and as much as we want them to pursue their dreams, life is expensive in 2019," says Matt Schulz, an Industry Analyst with CompareCards.com. "Parents are spending an awful lot of money to keep their kids in these activities."According to the study, 62% of parents admit they go into debt to pay for it all. 64% of parents say the costs cause them added stress.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Community colleges offer free tuition to San Diego students"It's important to support your kids and teach them to follow their dreams," says Schulz. "But you also have to be able to do so without ruining your own dreams."One San Diego parent thinks she has a way to help. Jessica Mendez is trying to launch an online marketplace where parents can trade used sports equipment to help defray the costs."Every season, kids grow," says Mendez. "Every few months you have to purchase new cleats, a new bat to grow with them."Mendez has four boys that have been involved in all kinds of sports. As they've grown, old equipment has piled up in her garage. Mendez thinks she can have the site up in about a year. She also asked other family members to chip in some money instead of buying toys for birthday or holiday gifts.White says her family spends -6,000 a year on registration, travel and all the other costs associated with extracurricular activities. But it's worth it."I want them to be well rounded and exposed to many opportunities," she says, adding that the activities keep her kids away from doing anything that may get them into trouble.The study also found that nearly 80% of parents believe their child's activities could one day lead to income, whether in the form of a scholarship, job or side-hustle.Schulz says it's also essential to involve your children in discussions about how their activities factor into the budget."It makes sense to be open and honest with your kids about the cost of these things," he says. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays.
