Although Columbus was the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in the 10th century, the History Channel says he viewed the native people as obstacles.Columbus is accused of labeling the indigenous people as “Indians.” Other points of controversy revolve around the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native people to Christianity, and the introduction of deadly diseases.As a result of these points, Native Americans and other groups have protested the celebration of Columbus Day, viewing it as a celebration of the colonization of America, the beginning of the slave trade, and the deaths of natives from murder and disease.In the past few years, there’s been a movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which honors Native American histories and cultures. When you enter the building at Daybreak Senior Services, pictures of blushing brides and anxious grooms greet you.“This is such a historic place,” said Scott Rasmussen, as he looked at the dozens of pictures lining the walls.Although the fashion trends may have faded, the memories have not.For 50 years, the building was a reception hall. It was a place of celebration, a symbol of new life beginning. Now, it’s a home base for those not ready to give up on life.“It’s a gap that needs to be filled and that’s why we’re here,” said Rasmussen, who is the program director at Daybreak Senior Services.Some days, that means joining a rousing game of indoor badminton or laying down the law playing some board games.Instead of wedding gowns, everyone now wears masks. Though you can’t see the smiles, you know they’re under there."One of our participants loves coming here and she calls it, ‘the club,’” Rasmussen said. “She tells everyone that she wants to go to the club, and I think it’s because we’re doing cool stuff.”Sure, they are doing cool stuff, but the biggest goal for Rasmussen is to help seniors from feeling isolated and alone."It is a real thing,” Rasmussen said. "I’ve known seniors that get so depressed that they say they’d rather just be done than have to go through another week of this because it’s just too hard.”Rasmussen said there is a real need in our country to help seniors who aren’t quite ready for full-time assisted living but are not getting all they need at home."If you’re loved one is just staying home all the time, they’re missing out on a part of their life, where they'd still be growing even as an advanced age 65 to 105,” Rasmussen said. “We can always still be growing.”The adult day care partners with programs through the VA and Medicaid and participants can drop in whenever they want. Programs like this are available all over the country."We love all of our participants. We absolutely love them, and we love what we do here because it’s such a valuable thing,” Rasmussen said.COVID-19 may be affecting their numbers some, but Rasmussen says it’s even more reason for people to reach out to their loved ones and check-in.“You need to just ask those questions, because if you don’t ask you just have a feeling of despair and it just gets harder and harder and that makes it difficult on everyone,” Rasmussen said.There may not be a lot of dancing going on or tossing of bouquets but there is hope and commitment to keep on going. 2482
While traveling with his parents on route to Virginia from New Jersey, James Murray made an attempt to get on I-95 and make a smooth sailing trip to his destination.But, Maryland's weather and high winds had other plans."The rain was okay, and getting out of New Jersey was fine, but then we got into and crossed over Maryland and they closed I-95 down, it was crazy," said Murray.In a Facebook Live, Murray goes into detail about his tense situation.Murray says he recalls the traffic being stand still and officials forcing all the vehicles off of the interstate into a little town called Port Deposit.It was starting to hit the late hours of midnight and Murray's parents, who were also in the vehicle, began to feel worried that they wouldn't be able to find their way. With no hotels and no opened restaurants in the area, they all started to feel concerned while driving through the unknown town for hours.That's when Murray saw an opened restaurant called Jumbo Jimmy's and immediately pulled into the parking lot to enter the restaurant. He was then greeted by a woman behind the counter who told him that the restaurant's kitchen was closed. After the woman took a second glimpse at Murray and recognized who he was, she immediately told him that they'll be more than happy to open the kitchen to serve him."The people were so lovely, so lovely in this place, not just the people that worked there, but the patrons were so nice and friendly, and they treated my parents like a million bucks." Murray also goes on to share that many people in the restaurant extended their generosity and were willing to open their homes to him and his parents. He and his wife Veronica were in love with their little girl. I feel that loss every day,” said Veronica. Doctors found out too late that Francesca had whooping cough and they also found out how she caught it. “I had whooping cough. I don’t know where I got it from. I look back and wish that I would have known more about the way I could have protected myself and my family,” said Veronica. Babies cannot be vaccinated against whooping cough, but doctors recommend those who care for them are. Veronica says she asked why she wasn’t told this during her pregnancy. Companies walked back statements they made on Twitter or struggled to explain their actual relationships to Hannity -- in each case stoking the social media fires.Critics targeted companies that advertised on Hannity's syndicated radio show as well as his Fox News program after Hannity appeared to defend Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday. Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers, including a 14-year-old girl. He has denied the allegations.The firestorm began in earnest on Friday. Angelo Carusone, president of liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America, appealed directly to brands like Keurig to cut advertising ties with Hannity."Good afternoon @Keurig. You are currently sponsoring Sean Hannity's show ... please reconsider," Carusone wrote on Twitter.Keurig responded the next morning. The company said on Twitter: "We worked with our media partner and FOX news to stop our ad from airing during the Sean Hannity Show."Keurig's response was praised by Hannity's critics. "If you don't think through the media strategy carefully, you can expose yourself to criticism from other people -- including people you see as potential customers," King said.Schenkler added that brands may sometimes forget how public their Twitter interactions are."What [brands] might consider to be business conversations are just out there, and people forget that," he said.
