KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Last week, a Kansas City couple’s special day took a horrifying turn when the groom-to-be accidentally dropped the ring he was in the process of proposing with into the water beneath the picturesque bridge he and his bride-to-be were on.Seth Dixon and Ruth Salas’ friends got into the pond at Loose Park to find the lost gem, but their search was unsuccessful.Giving up hope of finding the wedding ring, the couple searched for a way to replace it. A friend started a GoFundMe page after video of the incident went viral, and the couple was eventually invited onto 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' for a do-over, complete with a custom-built set made to look like Loose Park and a brand new ring.Little did they know, hundreds of miles away, back home in Kansas City, a complete stranger had taken it upon himself to find their precious lost treasure.“I wanted to make sure they got it back before somebody else found it and had the opportunity to not give it back,” Michael Long said.Long lives in Springfield, Missouri, and made the 170-mile trek to Loose Park three different times to make sure Dixon and Salas got their ring back.He said he was scrolling through Facebook one day when he came across the viral video. Knowing he had the ability to find the ring, he went to search the water.Long dove for the first time on Thursday. He searched using only a metal detector and no scuba gear, bobbing up for air and back down to the pond floor for an hour and a half before calling it quits for the night. But he didn't give up.Long came back on Saturday, and this time searched for three hours until he finally pulled the diamond from the pond.Long searched the pond at Loose Park to make sure Dixon and Salas got their ring back.Long said he contacted a friend of the couple about 20 minutes after his discovery and made arrangements to get the ring back to Dixon and Salas as soon as possible.The couple finally got their ring back on Tuesday, thanks to Long.He said he felt compelled to help in the situation even though he didn’t know those involved personally because he wanted everyone to know that there are still good people out in the world.He also said he wanted there to be peace of mind that the couple got their ring back rather than someone stealing it or it remaining lost.Long’s other finds from his dives? KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Music teacher Matt Ketteman's classroom at Longview Farm Elementary may feel a little different now — quieter, with fewer kids and more protocols. But his mission to spread joy is as loud as ever."'Cause if there's anything we all need a little bit of right now, it's a little bit of fun," Ketteman said.When Ketteman won Teacher of the Year for the Lee's Summit R-7 School District, it also looked a little different. He found out while at home alone on a Zoom call.Ketteman also earned recognition as one of seven finalists for the Missouri Teacher of the Year award. He had previously been named one of 15 semi-finalists.Usually, as Teacher of the Year, he'd make a speech at the annual teacher's convocation, but that wasn't possible this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he knew he had to do something special.He called up his colleagues and fellow members of a fun musical group, the LSR5 Band, for help."Hey, what do you guys think about putting a video together to bring everyone together in a digital way that is fun and exciting?" Ketteman asked them.They all agreed. And they did not disappoint.They created a music video using the song "Break My Stride," but changed the lyrics around a bit to reflect what's going on today with COVID-19 and schools.The teachers dressed up in full '80s attire and wigs. They recorded each of their musical pieces on a green screen and another colleague edited it all together.Ketteman's wife, Kim, makes an appearance in the video, too.They sing, "Teaching today is just the strangest scene. A virus called corona kept us all working from home-a. So here's my tip to help your year start clean. When you're facing challenges that are unforeseen just say, ain't nothing gonna break my stride, nobody gonna slow me down, oh no, I got to keep on moving.""So that's what I focused on, just being positive and sending those encouraging, uh, dance moves out into the community," Ketteman said.The video has been shared all around the district, the state, and the country."He has a lot of enthusiasm and a passion for teaching and so it sparked that and ignited that passion in everybody else as we got ready," Longview Farm Principal Kim Hassler said.Ketteman has been teaching for 17 years. Right now, he teaches kindergarten through third-grade students in-person. Students in fourth through sixth grades are learning from home, but he helps them learn songs and how to keep rhythm by using their hands, or they make their own instruments.His classroom is full of instruments on the floor and walls, along with fun learning stations. LA JOLLA, Calif. (CNS) - Thousands of University of California service workers are expected to begin a three-day strike Monday at campuses and medical facilities across the state, including at UC San Diego's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla.Service workers represented by Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize a strike if no progress were made in negotiations.UC officials have repeatedly criticized the union for calling the strike, accusing it of rejecting an offer of "fair, multi-year wage increases and excellent medical and retirement benefits."In light of the impasse, the university system last month imposed contract terms on the union for the 2017-18 fiscal year, including 2 percent pay increases. The UC's latest contract offer to the union included annual 3 percent raises over the next four years, according to the university.The union denounced the move to impose contract terms, responding by issuing a notice of a strike set to last until Wednesday."We've bargained in good faith for over a year to address the widening income, racial and gender disparities that front-line, low-wage workers at UC are living every day," AFSCME Local 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger said. "Instead of joining us in the effort to arrest these trends, UC has insisted on deepening them -- leaving workers no option but to strike."UC officials said in a statement that they "strongly disagree with AFSCME's decision to strike, which will negatively impact patients, students and the UC community.""We are doing everything in our power to limit disruptions on our campuses and medical centers to ensure our patients get the care they need and our students the services they deserve," according to the UC.The UC insisted that its service workers -- including custodians, gardeners, food service workers and facilities maintenance staff -- are compensated at or above the market rate, "and in some cases, by as much as 17 percent higher than comparable jobs."The university Monday said it currently pays workers anywhere between just over ,000 for food service to more than 1,000 for a respiratory therapist.University officials said the union is demanding a 6 percent annual wage increase, "which is twice what other UC employees have received."They said their final offer included, in addition to the pay raises, a lump-sum payment upon contract ratification, health benefits consistent with those of other workers and continuation of pension benefits for existing employees.
