A poll commissioned by CNN and conducted by SSRS showed a majority of Americans are embarrassed by how the US has responded to the coronavirus pandemic, and are angry about the way things are going in the nation. The poll conducted August 12 through 15 was released on Wednesday.The poll surveyed 1,108 Americans, 31% of whom are Democrats, 27% of whom are Republicans, and the remaining 42% being either independent or a third-party supporter.The poll has a 3.7% margin of error.Here are the highlights:68% of Americans are embarrassed by America’s coronavirus response, compared to 28% who say they’re proud51% said they’re “very angry” about the direction of the country; 27% said they’re somewhat angry57% said there should not be in-person learning in their community, compared to 37% who said their local schools should be open for in-person learning49% said that pro sports should not be played, compared to 46% who say games should be playedAs far as marks on President Donald Trump, 51% approve of his handling of the economy, compared to 44% who disapprove. While most Americans approve of his handling of the economy, 62% said he could be doing more to combat the coronavirus.The number of Americans who are personally impacted by the virus has also increased in recent months. When the poll was last conducted in June, only 40% of Americans said they personally knew someone who was infected by the virus. A trio of guitars designed and played by the late Eddie Van Halen sold for 2,000 at auction earlier this week, according to Rolling Stone and Billboard.Van Halen's guitars were among the top-selling items at Julien's Auctions' annual Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock 'n' Roll Auction.According to Rolling Stone, a custom Van Halen guitar designed in conjunction with guitar tech Matt Bruck sold for 1,250. A Texas jail guard suffered a heart attack two years ago, and if not for a group of inmates, he could have lost his life, WFAA-TV reported.Gary Grimm of Weatherford, Texas is thankful for those inmates who gave the now 52-year-old retired jail guard a second-chance at life."Instead of overtaking me and taking my gun, and killing me or taking a hostage and escaping, they looked at me as a human being," Grimm told WFAA. The inmates reportedly had to knock down a locked gate to get to Grimm after they realized he was having a medical emergency. The group of eight inmates were able to get the attention of others in the jail, who were able to help Grimm seek medical attention. Grimm never got the opportunity to personally thank the inmates as they were transferred to other institutions."I get emotional. If they wished harm for me, all they had to do was sit there and do nothing," Grimm told WFAA. Grimm said he treated inmates the way he would want to be treated. Perhaps, that is why they came to his aid when he needed it."I don't care if they're a drug user, hot check writer, or child molester. They're still a human being. I don't have to like what they did, but it's not my position to be the judge and jury," Grimm told the station. 1275

A relatively new term we're hearing to help stop the spread of coronavirus is “support bubble.”It’s essentially described as a safer way to socialize and support each other. It’s when family members in different houses or close friends agree to socialize in person, but only with each other to limit the risk of infection.“So, when you join a bubble, you're taking on additional risk and the amount of risk you're taking on is that difference between you and the person with the highest risk in the group,” said Cyrus Shahpar, an epidemiologist with Resolve to Save Lives. “So, it’s important to be vigilant and trust those in the bubble.”Part of a support bubble agreement is that everyone practices the same things outside the bubble, including not forming other bubbles. You should also agree to how long the bubble will last. Obviously, the less people, the lower the risk.It’s also a good strategy for families that need help with things like childcare or taking care of an aging relative.Even professional sports teams and other businesses are somewhat following this theory, setting up things like safe hotels and doing things like testing anyone that comes in.“Then, you tell them they can’t leave the place and inside have to be careful about interaction, then you could theoretically say that’s a safer place than outside the hotel,” said Shahpar.Support bubbles could also help limit virus spread even if someone inside the group were to get the virus, because you already know who the close contacts are.“As we navigate through uncharted waters, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We don’t know how long it’s going to last. So, if this helps us maintain our sanity throughout this pandemic, I think it’s a good idea,” said Shahpar.Other countries and some U.S. counties using the support bubble model are seeing success in lowering cases. 1861
