BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet) --Chinese companies Thursday denied allegations by a Zimbabwe trade union that said Chinese construction firms had violated labor laws there by underpaying and abusing local staff.Ge Yizhong, deputy general manager of Zim Nantong Construction, which is currently operating in Zimbabwe, told the Global Times that local workers his company had hired were satisfied with their working conditions, including salaries."There is no ill-treatment of workers at my company. We have provided protective clothing to local workers and pay them according to the regulations set out by the local trade union," he said. "We have adjusted working hours to meet workers' demands. BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, China's cabinet, announced Sunday a slew of measures to rein in rising commodity prices to ease the economic pressures on the people.Local governments and departments are required to boost agricultural production and stabilize supply of agricultural products and fertilizer while reducing the cost of agricultural products and ensuring coal, power, oil and gas supplies, the State Council said in a seven-page circular.The cabinet urged local departments to step up vegetable-planting efforts while stabilizing winter vegetable production and strengthening grain and edible-oil production field management to ward off supply shortages.To reduce delivery costs, road tolls for vehicles transporting fresh- and live-farm produce will be forbidden from Dec. 1, the circular said.The cabinet also ordered local authorities to continue to reduce the prices of power, gas and rail-transport for chemical-fertilizer producers while ensuring coal supplies for power generation companies and increasing production of oil -- especially diesel -- to guarantee sufficient supply.Local governments must temporarily disburse subsidies to needy people and increase allowances for poor students and student canteens, the circular added.Local authorities were ordered to establish coordinated social-security mechanisms that promise a gradual rise in basic pensions, unemployment insurance and minimum wages.Local departments were also ordered to adjust prices promptly and to impose temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials where necessary.Market monitoring will be intensified to clamp down on hoarding and speculation in major agricultural products, the circular added.Chinese decision makers have made price controls a top priority, as the consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in the 12 months to the end of October. The hike was mainly due to a 10.1-percent surge in food prices. BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen of 17 Vietnamese crew members were saved by a Chinese rescue team after strong winds sank the Vietnamese ship, the Hung Cuong 168, near Minjiang estuary in the East China Sea on Friday evening, the Chinese rescue center said.According to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC), the Vietnamese ship, which was overloaded with 5,200 tonnes of stone materials, had an engine breakdown this afternoon and overturned at around 5:00 p.m. due to high winds, with 17 crew members falling into the sea.Being alerted about the accident, China's East China Sea Rescue Bureau and the local maritime search and rescue center in the coastal Fujian Province sent professional salvage vessels and helicopters to the scene where they rescued 13 sailors, as of 6:18 p.m.The rescue team is still searching for the remaining four sailors, according to the CMSRC.

LANZHOU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Nitric acid that spilled from a crashed truck in a northwest Chinese city Monday has caused no contamination of the Yellow River -- China's second longest river, local officials said.Workers had cleaned up tons of acid that entered a roadside drain in a four-hour operation after the accident in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, said a spokesman of a work crew tasked to clean up the chemical.Tests show the spill did not pollute the environment near the Yellow River, he said.Officials with the city environmental protection bureau said they would keep monitoring the water quality of the Yellow River.A truck carrying 14 tonnes of nitric acid overturned and caught fire on Liuzhong Highway near Lanzhou at noon on Monday. One driver was killed while the other was seriously injured.
