NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. EMS responded and pronounced the mother dead at the scene.Later Wednesday, police announced Aponte's adult son was arrested in connection with her death.Police believe Steven Castro, 40, struck his mother in the head with an object during a "jealous rage."It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sparked the man's rage.Castro is now facing charges including murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom at WPIX. 949

NEW YORK — David Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, died Monday at the age of 93.Dinkins was elected in 1989 and served as mayor from 1990 to 1993, making him the first and only Black man to serve as the city's mayor.He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president.Dinkins defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the Democratic primary in 1989 and later beat Rudy Giuliani on his path to City Hall.In his inaugural address, he vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York" and declared, "we are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom."Dinkins was known for his reserved public demeanor and civility.He was an American voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions, and his policies as mayor reflected his support for South Africa.He also created the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, built a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and worked to create an all civilian police complaint review board.According to a city biography, Dinkins was sharply criticized for his handling of racial strife in Crown Heights, a boycott of Korean Grocers in Brooklyn and civil unrest in Washington Heights. He also dealt with sluggish economic growth.Giuliani succeeded Dinkins in 1993 after one term in office.After leaving City Hall, Dinkins remained active in city politics and taught public affairs at Columbia University.The NYPD said initial indications were that he died of natural causes.Dinkins was married to his wife Joyce for more than 65 years, and together they had two children.Joyce Dinkins died in October. NORTH READING, Mass. – An off-duty police officer in Massachusetts is being credited with saving three people from an early morning house fire on Tuesday.The North Reading Police Department says Sgt. Thomas Encarnacao had just finished his shift and was on his way home when he noticed flames emerging from inside the home.After alerting dispatch of the fire, Encarnacao entered the home to alert the residents. He was able to locate a man sleeping on a coach at the front of the house and helped him outside to safety, according to police.The man told Encarnacao and other officers who had arrived to help that there were two more residents in the home, a 13-year-old boy sleeping in a back bedroom and a man in the basement of the home.The man in the basement was able to get out on his own after officers alerted him, but police say first responders had to pull the boy out through a window of a smoke-filled room.All three residents were evaluated by EMS at the scene and didn’t go to the hospital. No firefighters were injured. One officer suffered a cut to his hand while attempting to breach a basement window.Firefighters were able to put the blaze out, but the house ended up sustaining smoke, fire and water damage. Police say the residents were displaced and are being assisted by family members.The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.“The work of the three officers this morning was truly courageous, and I am incredibly proud of them,” said Police Chief Michael Murphy. “Sgt. Encarnacao took decisive and immediate action, which very likely saved the lives of the residents inside the house. Once he got the first resident out, all three officers went back into the house, without protective gear, to look for additional residents. Their actions to get all of the residents out safely was truly heroic.” 1841
