WASHINGTON, D.C. – A powerful memorial in Washington D.C. honored the more than 210,000 Americans who have lost their lives to COVID-19.The group COVID Survivors for Change organized the memorial, which featured 20,000 empty chairs on the lawn across from the White House. Each seat represented less than a tenth of those killed by the coronavirus in the U.S.The founder of the group, Chris Kocher, told CNN that organizers wanted to bring attention to the sheer size of the loss six months into the pandemic and highlight the country’s “lack of acknowledgment.”The event was held on Sunday, which the group declared a National Day of Remembrance.During the event, attendees listened to stories of people who have lost loved ones to the coronavirus. Grammy Award-winner and former U.S. Ambassador for Health Dionne Warwick hosted.“The loss of lives has grown daily, leaving us all directly or indirectly affected by this disease,” Warwick said. “It takes all of us to raise our voices — we know we can’t always rely on the folks in charge to hear us unless we say it loudly and clearly.”Organizers and speakers hope the event encourages lawmakers to develop a national plan for safety and recovery, CBS News reports. The event was organized before President Donald Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19 himself. He and several others have tested positive after attending the announcement ceremony for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. 1444
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As if 2020 hasn’t been crazy enough, an asteroid is projected to come close to Earth on Nov. 2, the day before Election Day.There’s no need to prepare a doomsday bunker though. NASA says asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, about 6.5 feet, and “poses no threat to Earth!”According to NASA, the asteroid has a .41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere and even if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size. The asteroid was discovered in 2018 by astronomers in California who are on the lookout for dangerous space rocks and other cosmic surprises, The New York Times reports.Asteroid 2018VP1 seems to be making headlines because of its proximity to the contentious U.S. election, but another small asteroid buzzed by Earth just this month and it came closer to the planet than any other on record, according to NASA.The SUV-sized space rock passed 1,830 miles above the southern Indian Ocean on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 12:08 a.m. ET.Since 2005, NASA has been assigned by Congress to find 90% of the near-Earth asteroid that are about 460 feet or larger in size.“These larger asteroids pose a much greater threat if they were to impact, and they can be detected much farther away from Earth, because their rate of motion across the sky is typically much smaller at that distance,” wrote NASA. 1333
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden is nominating the education commissioner in Connecticut to serve as secretary of the Department of Education. After initial reports, Biden confirmed Tuesday that he would like Miguel Cardona to take over the role that Secretary Betsy DeVos has held since President Donald Trump took office in 2017.Watch Biden introduce Cardona below:Cardona has served as his state’s commissioner of education since August 2019. Before that, he served as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Meriden, according to Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The 45-year-old began his career as an elementary school teacher and served as a school principal for 10 years. He also taught for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Educational Leadership.Cardona is a low-profile candidate who The Washington Post says has pushed to reopen schools and hasn’t been aligned with any particular side in recent education policy battles. When schools moved to remote learning this year, The Associated Press reports Cardona hurried to deliver more than 100,000 laptops to students across The Constitution State. In his announcement, Biden said Cardona will lead the administration’s efforts to invest in all students, support educators, and make reopening schools safely a national priority. They hope to safely reopen the majority of classrooms within the first 100 days of Biden’s term.Biden says Cardona will strive to eliminate long-standing inequities and close racial and socioeconomic opportunity gaps — as well as expand access to community colleges, training and public four-year colleges and universities to improve student success and grow a stronger middle class.Cardona’s parents are from Puerto Rico. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be another diverse member of the administration’s Cabinet, which Biden has promised will be the most diverse in U.S. history.Biden issued this statement about Cardona: 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump's re-election campaign has scrapped plans to hold a rally in Alabama next weekend, CNN and The New York Post have confirmed. The cancellation of the event comes amid concerns about the rising number of coronavirus cases in parts of the United States, including the South. The campaign never formally announced the plans for the Alabama rally, but Trump was slated to travel to the state ahead of the GOP’s Senate primary race between his former attorney general, Jeff Sessions, and former Auburn University football coach, Tommy Tuberville.Campaign officials ultimately decided against it as state officials voiced concerns about a mass gathering during the COVID-19 pandemic, CNN reports.A person close the Trump campaign told CNN there are currently no rallies on the horizon, but aides are scoping out possible venues for future events. The canceled plans come as Trump continues to complain about the low turnout during his first return to the campaign trail in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1029
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Convention is aiming to recast the story of Donald Trump's presidency over its four nights of events this coming week. Trump campaign officials involved with the planning process tell The Associated Press that the theme of the convention is “Honoring the Great American Story” and will feature speakers drawn from everyday life as well as cable news and the White House. The primary aim will be to draw a stark contrast with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Trump is looking to shift the campaign away from being a referendum on a presidency ravaged by a pandemic and economic collapse and toward a choice between vastly different visions of America's future. 719
