A toddler was found in a cage during an animal rescue operation in Henry County.Henry County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s deputies raided a home with several outbuildings in the northern portion of the county Thursday.The child, who is under the age of two, was found in a cage in the same room as several large constricting snakes next to a box of live mice. The child was filthy, but unharmed and is now in DCS custody. A source said the reptiles could have easily killed the toddler.Deputies found several large marijuana plants and the group rescued more than 100 animals from the home.District attorney Matt Stowe says the child's parents and a grandparent were taken into custody. BALTIMORE, Md. – For 95-year-old Betty Cooke, her lifelong passion of turning metal into wearable works of art began in the 1940s. “I was always interested in making things, whether it's metal clay or whatever,” she said. “And I kind of took to this and I had a good feel for the simplicity of it.” It’s a simplicity celebrated not just at her Baltimore store, but also at the Baltimore Museum of Art. “They really stand out, they're really sculptural, they're really dimensional – they move on the body,” said Virginia Anderson, Baltimore Museum of Art Curator of American Art. Betty’s works are just one part of “2020 Vision,” a pledge by the museum in 2020 to only purchase art by female artists. “Of course, it was duly noted that this is this centennial of white women receiving the votes in the United States,” said Christopher Bedford, Director of the Baltimore Museum of Art. “So, we thought ‘well, this would be a great moment to analyze our collection, begin to understand some of our historical deficits.” How big are those gender deficits? A study last year published in the Public Library of Science looked at 18 major museums in the U.S. and found that 85 percent of the artists in their collections were white and 87 percent were men. This, despite the fact that half of the professional artists in the U.S. are women. At the Baltimore Museum of Art, the disparity is even more lopsided. “We have roughly four percent,” Bedford said. “Four percent of our collection is works by women.” Now, though, with 21 of their 23 curators being women, the Baltimore Museum of Art plans to spend at least .5 million this year, acquiring pieces by female artists – like those created by Betty Cooke. “This is a big moment for the women,” Cooke said. “I hope and I expect it to continue and I think it's pretty great.”Another recent study found that smaller museums seem to be doing better than larger ones, when it comes to buying works by female artists. Larger museums, though, point out that they often face not just financial constraints, but also by what art wealthy donors choose to offer the museums. 2126

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In a skyscraper, nearly 50 floors above a New York City, a group of women are gathering to ask for more. “We’ve barely budged in two decades,” said Kim Churches, CEO of the American Association of University Women. What’s barely budged are women’s salaries, still lagging far behind what men make in America. That’s where the “Ask For More” workshop campaign is stepping in. The American Association of University Women, along with numerous other groups, are holding free workshops across the country to teach women how to successfully negotiate a higher salary. The goal: to train 10 million women in the next three years. “Women make up half the labor force, yet it is still is a man’s world in how workplace hiring and promotions take place,” Churches said. “And it’s on us to really change them.” The numbers are sobering. For every dollar a man makes, women make an average of 79 cents on the dollar. It’s even worse for minority women: African-American women make 62 cents on the dollar; Hispanic women make 54 cents. “I found myself needing to ask for more money than I think I was getting,” said Samantha Hamidan, who is an immigration lawyer. Hamidan came to one of the workshops in New York City, after recently trying to ask for a raise. “I’m hoping to really be able to parlay these skills into asking for more money at the next position,” she said. Domestic workers often don't have basic legal rights and protections that most workers take for granted. That includes jobs like nannies, housekeepers and home care employees.Now, they’re hoping a new proposed federal labor law will protect them for the first time ever. Nurse June Barrett is used to taking care of others, but today, she feels she's taking a big step to take care of herself. Barrett traveled to Washington, D.C. with about 100 other domestic workers to rally for safer job protections. “He would touch me, kiss me, say horrible things to me,” Barrett says of one of her past employees. As a live-in caretaker, Barrett says she has worked for patients who would sexually harass her. “I suffered in silence,” she says. “I had to suffer all of that by myself.” For decades, federal labor laws have excluded domestic workers from many protections, which has had an impact on about two million nannies, house cleaners and home care workers. Nine states have passed bills to protect domestic workers but now, Congress will consider a bill to ensure those workers earn at least the minimum wage, get paid sick leave and overtime, meal breaks and stronger protections against harassment and discrimination.“We need to have a federal standard, a national standard, so that workers are protected in every state. Not just some,” says Monica Ramirez with the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Ramirez hopes for the first time in history, there will be legal protections for domestic workers in their work environments. It’ll be a historic bill that could provide domestic workers protections most other workers take for granted. “Why aren't we getting the protection that we need?” asks Barrett. “Why shouldn't we get the protection we need?” 1766
DENVER, Colorado — Cloud seeding can provide between 5% and 15% more snow to help ski areas, farmers and watersheds in the state, supporters say. "These observations show us that cloud seeding does work," said University of Colorado researcher Katja Friedrich, who has studied cloud seeding inside and outside of a laboratory. She worked with scientists who flew planes near moisture-rich clouds and injected them with silver iodide, a substance that causes moisture to become heavy and fall to the ground as snow. On a radar image, she pointed outlines of snow that later formed. The visible lines matched the pattern the cloud seeding plane had flown in the sky. Cloud seeding in Colorado aims to produce more snow, not rain. Friedrich said it's difficult to quantify how much additional snow is created. Cloud seeding doesn't make more clouds, but supporters believe it gets more snow out of an approaching storm. Planes can be used to seed approaching storm clouds. Ground seeders use propane to heat the air and also used in the mountains and Western Slope. Silver iodide is then added to the warmed air as it rises. The moisture, already in the clouds, bonds to the silver iodide. When it becomes heavy, it falls to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding has been happening for about 70 years in Colorado but is slowed in years when there is heavy snowfall. Cloud seeders operated during the 2018-2019 winter but slowed in places where significant snowpack accumulated. A man who owns a cloud seeding company on the Western Slope said the technology works well. Cloud seeder's viewpoint Cloud seeders dot highpoints in Colorado from the west to central part of the state. Ski areas hire Eric Hjermstad's Western Weather Consultants company to cloud seed early in the season, so there's more natural snow before opening day. He continues seeding until mid-April. He showed off a cloud seeder located at a recreation site north of Leadville. He can remote start the seeder, turn on the propane flame and add the silver iodide. 2040
