High school students across the country could soon receive training on how to stop bleeding during an incident like a school shooting, and the federal government is offering a big grant to make this happen.This week, Clay High School in Oregon, Ohio became one of the few schools to add Stop the Bleed kits in 90 classrooms, thanks to the proposal of student Nick McNeal.McNeal brought the idea to his school’s student government program, and after much persistence, his school passed out the kits to all teachers earlier this week."Now it's a matter of, how can we keep our kids safe in addition to education," says school principal James Jurski.Now, the Department of Homeland Security wants to make sure even more teachers and students are prepared to do what they can to minimize casualties in the event of a school shooting. Officials are offering .8 million to anyone who can come up with a trauma-training program that could be utilized on a national scale.The program, called “School-Age Trauma Training (SATT),” seeks to “deliver free to the public, lifesaving trauma training to high school age students for mass casualty events.”Jurski says in 2018, it's just a necessity that schools prepare for these situations, but he admitted it is frustrating that it has come to this.“Every teacher in the building went into education to educate students,” explains Jurski. “And I don't think there’s a time, at least when I went to school, where safety was even mentioned in our training. Good Samaritans and authorities rescued a couple in their 70s whose vehicle crashed into a Long Island canal following a collision with another vehicle Monday.Police say it happened when a Ford pickup truck and a Subaru were involved in a motor vehicle crash at Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, New York. When the Subaru backed up following the crash, police say it collided with a Mercury.The Mercury crashed through a fence and fell into a canal.Video shows the moment the car was partially submerged in the water.Five good Samaritans and two Suffolk County police officers jumped into the water to rescue the couple.Joseph Abitabile, 78, was driving the Mercury. He was rescued from the vehicle, along with his wife, Delores, 76, who was unconscious.An off-duty Lake Success police officer administered CPR, restoring the woman's pulse and breathing back to normal.The Abitabiles, one good Samaritan, the two Suffolk County officers and the driver of the Subaru were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. (AP) — A magnitude-4.7 earthquake has struck a wilderness area of central California.The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor occurred at 12:42 p.m. Tuesday and was centered about 16 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Hollister. The quake occurred at a depth of 6 miles (9.6 kilometers).The epicenter area is in a rugged mountain range, with agricultural areas to the west.Late Monday, the San Francisco Bay Area was rattled by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake.That quake was center near Pleasant Hill, northeast of Oakland but was felt widely.More than 67,000 people posted to the U.S. Geological Survey's citizen reporting web page.Veteran seismologist Lucy Jones says the two quakes are too far apart to be related. 741

HORTONVILLE, Wis — Benshot, a northeast Wisconsin company that produces glassware embedded with bullets, gifted handguns to staff as an early Christmas present. The company staffs 16 full-time employees and gifted the handguns as an effort to promote personal safety and team building, according to the The Post Crescent.Owner Ben Wolfram told the paper that this is the first time in their three years of business that they've gifted guns to workers. HONG KONG — Hong Kong Disneyland Park is closing temporarily following the city’s decision to ban public gatherings of more than four people because of the coronavirus pandemic. Disney officials posted on the resort’s website that the Hong Kong park was closing Wednesday until further notice. The resort’s hotels will remain open with adjusted levels of service. Hong Kong’s leader, Carrie Lam, announced new coronavirus-related restrictions Monday and she urged the private sector to put in place work-from-home arrangements for employees. The Hong Kong park and Shanghai Disneyland closed in January because of the virus. Shanghai Disneyland reopened in May, as did the Hong Kong park last month. 707
