CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A U.S. Marine was fatally injured in a tactical- vehicle accident at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps announced Monday. The serviceman was one of three members of the elite Marine Raider Regiment involved in the accident, which occurred during a training exercise on Saturday, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command.The critically injured Marine was airlifted to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead Sunday night, Mannweiler said. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after U.S. Customs and Border Protection says he tried to smuggle more than 200 pounds of liquid methamphetamine into the U.S. According to CBP, the 36-year-old man tried to enter the U.S. at the Calexico Port of entry Tuesday night around 11 p.m. The man was referred to a secondary inspection point when a K-9 alerted agents to the gas tank area. Upon further inspection, CBP discovered 222 pounds of liquid meth worth 6,000. “Drug trafficking organizations have one goal in mind, which is to get their product across,” said Officer in Charge, Sergio Beltran. “Concealing narcotics in gas tanks is one tactic and by utilizing our layered enforcement, we were able to stop this before it plagued our communities.”The man was arrested and the drugs and vehicle seized. 826

(KGTV) — The grandmother of the 17-year-old who's accused of stabbing Lisa Thorborg to death on a Carlsbad hiking trail in November doesn't believe her grandson could have committed the crime.Christie Hernandez said that she talked to her grandson, Haloa Beaudet, just after Tuesday's virtual court hearing where new surveillance images were revealed and the judge allowed the release of the teen's name. Images of his face have been ordered to remain withheld from the public."[He said] 'I'm strong. I'm going to be positive. You and papa [don't need to] worry. "Most people have seen us on top of the hill, on top of the Flower Fields. Certain times of the day, you might notice a beautiful crystal piece, sparkling at the top of our building. Still, most people aren't aware they can come and visit, it's probably one of the best-kept secrets in Carlsbad," said Cathryn Ramirez, Director of Global Business Development at the Gemological Institute of America. The Institute is the global headquarters of the GIA. The non-profit is home to a museum, research lab, and school. Students come from around the world to study gems and jewelry design. "We have not only our education campus here, but we have our laboratory where we do grading of gemstones, we do research here, and it's our corporate offices as well," said Ramirez. The GIA houses more than a thousand gems and pieces of jewelry. Tours are available by reservation. Another one of Carlsbad's best-kept secrets is a short walk from the GIA. CARLSBAD (CNS) - A Carlsbad man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly killing his roommate.Patrol officers responding to a report of a death in the 2500 block of West Ranch Street at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday found a 40-year-old woman dead in an apartment in the neighborhood near the intersection of El Camino Real and Tamarack Avenue, police said.Her name was withheld pending family notification.Detectives questioned the woman's roommate, 44-year-old Brehon Roy Quigley, then arrested him, Carlsbad police Lt. Jason Jackowski said. Quigley was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of murder.Police declined to release details on how the victim died and would not disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying."The investigation into what occurred and why is ongoing," the lieutenant said.
