YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Scores of rescuers on Saturday night slowly made their way through dust-filled underground tunnels to continue searching for 16 miners who were trapped following a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan province.Twenty-one miners have been confirmed dead in the accident, local work safety authorities said, while 239 out of the 276 miners who were working underground escaped after the gas leak occurred at about 6 a.m. in a small coal mine in Yuzhou city."The thick dust in the shaft is hampering the rescue. We must clear the dust first. We have located the trapped miners already," said Du Bo, an engineer with the mine's parent company who participated in the rescue.He said more than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust were in the pit due to damage caused by the gas leak.The conditions of the missing miners remains unknown. Officials said the miners were located 50 to 80 meters down the shaft from the entrance to the pit."Fortunately, there was no gas explosion. Otherwise, the consequence would be disastrous," a rescuer surnamed Wang told reporters. He said most of the victims were believed to have suffocated.Officials said work crews are struggling to retrieve the remains of the victims from the mine.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp. It was hit by a similar gas and coal leak in 2008. Twenty-three people died in that accident.Ironically, miners were working underground to improve accident prevention measures when the gas leak occurred on Saturday.Billboards reading "Safety is a fortune of the family; Safety is of heavenly importance to our miners" hung at the entrance of the mine.Guo Gengmao, governor of Henan, and Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety, supervised the rescue efforts.Authorities are investigating the cause of the gas burst.The accident occurred as people around the globe watched in awe during the rescue of 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for more than two months. China's work safety officials and experts said there are lessons to learn from Chile's dramatic rescue."Mining accidents in China usually claim heavy loss of lives. The lack of modern emergency response systems is a key factor," said Liu Tiemin, a researcher with the China Academy of Safety Sciences and Technology.Gas leaks in China's coal mines left 341 people dead in the first half of this year.Of note, the fatality rates have actually decreased in recent months as the country's senior officials ordered the industry to strengthen safety measures.China closed 7,466 illegal mines in four years, from 2006 to 2009. BEIJING, Oct.12 (Xinhua) - Auto sales in China continued to expand last month, raising the forecast for annual sales to a record 17 million units this year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said here Tuesday.Sales of automobiles rose 16.89 percent in September from a year earlier and 24.69 percent from August to 1.56 million units, while auto production was up 16.94 percent year on year to 1.59 million units, said CAAM.In the first nine months of this year, auto production reached 13.08 million units, up 36.1 percent from a year ago.A total of 13.14 million units of domestically-made auto vehicles were sold in China in the same period, up 35.97 percent year on year.Sales for the Jan.-Sept.period are quite close to the total number of vehicles sold last year, when China overtook the United States to become the world' s largest auto maker and auto market with production and sales hitting 13.79 million and 13.64 million units respectively.China' s annual production and sales of new autos are likely to surpass 17 million units this year, CAAM predicted, matching the highest annual level ever reached in the United States.Although the expansion in the sector has brought in an industrial boom and played an important role in China' s domestic demand, it has also triggered widespread concerns over the country' s energy capacity, pollution levels and rising traffic pressures.For general citizens and city planners in China, the increasing number of traffic jams is the most obvious problem in enjoying a life behind the wheel.In Beijing, the rising number of private cars, along with heavy rainfall and a spurt in holiday travel, caused a record 140 traffic jams in a single Friday evening last month. TAIYUAN, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will flex its muscles to boost the low-carbon economy and green industry, in a bid to help upgrade the development mode of exports, said a senior government official Thursday.Gao Hucheng, Vice Minister of Commerce, said at an energy forum in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province, that China has risen to become one of the world's largest exporters, though it is not a strong exporter yet, remaining at the low end of the global value chain.China's exports leaped in recent decades, mainly dependent upon low labor costs and sales of energy and resources.Further, China needs to put more efforts into producing high-end products and improving their quality through low-carbon and green technologies to expand the share of green products in exports, he said.The global financial crisis hurt the world economy and promoted nations to look to green industry for new growth, he said, and adding strategic new industries could be "a new growth point" for China's foreign trade.China would encourage major products, technologies and services in new energy and energy-saving sectors to tap the global market and support enterprises to invest abroad, Gao said, without giving details.Further, he said there was "no land boundary" in terms of low-carbon and green technology and expected international cooperation in this field.China was opposed to protectionist measures in any form, he added.

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official reiterated on Friday that a peaceful resolution through consultation and negotiation was needed to handle disputes over the South China Sea.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), made the remarks in his keynote speech at the opening of the Xiangshan military forum in Beijing, which discussed Asia-Pacific security issues.Ma reiterated that China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea and the surrounding waters, and is committed to enhancing dialogue and cooperation with the parties concerned to maintain peace and stability in the region.He stressed that China had always guaranteed freedom of navigation in and flying over the South China Sea in accordance with international law."It is the common interests of China and other countries to maintain freedom and security of navigation in the region," he said.""We also believe that the overall situation in the South China Sea is stable," Ma said.
