BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will offer greater financial support to education for ethnic minority groups in the next decade, says a national education plan released Thursday.The Outline of China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) says allocation of public educational resources shall favor minority-inhabited areas."Speeding up educational development for ethnic minority groups is of far-reaching importance for promoting socioeconomic development among the people and in the areas inhabited by them, and for enhancing unity between people of different ethnic backgrounds," the outline says.Efforts shall be made to promote coordinated development of all kinds of education at all levels in minority-inhabited areas, it says.Border counties and impoverished counties in ethnic autonomous areas shall be supported to meet government standards for the construction of school buildings for compulsory education, with special efforts devoted to building boarding schools, it says.Development in senior middle school education in the minority-inhabited areas shall be speeded up. Support shall also be granted to areas with poor education in a bid to renovate, expand or build senior middle schools, it adds.No effort shall be spared to expand vocational education in minority-inhabited areas, and more support shall be granted to secondary vocational education in these areas, according to the outline.And more support shall be granted to educational development for ethnic minorities with small populations, it says.Efforts shall also be made to advance bilingual teaching, open Chinese language classes in every school, and popularize the national common language and writing system.However, minority groups' right to be educated in their native languages shall also be respected and ensured, it says.Schools in minority-inhabited areas shall get more help from their counterparts in other parts of the country under a "pairing-assistance" program, it saysThe education for ethnic minority groups has seen marked progress in recent years, it says.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A new round of rains started to pound the mudslide-flattened Chinese town of Zhouqu Monday night, which has increased the possibilities of new mudslides occurring.The weather bureau in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, which administers Zhouqu County, issued a rainstorm warning Monday night, warning about the likelihood of new geological disasters.Rains started pounding Zhouqu at around 10 p.m., which, according to Gansu's provincial weather bureau, could last for five days and precipitation in some regions may reach 60 to 80 mm.The massive landslide on August 8 killed 1,254 people as of 4 p.m.Monday, with 490 still missing.Residents are ferried by a boat in landslide-hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug. 16, 2010. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rescuers to race against time to search survivors after catastrophic mudslides hit a northwest China county and left nearly 1,300 people missing Sunday.At least 127 people have been confirmed dead and 1,294 others were reported missing in rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning."For those who were buried under the debris, now it's the most crucial time to save their lives," Wen stressed during a meeting held at the county government late Sunday night.He said the search and rescue work must not be halted as long as the possibility for finding survivors still exists.He instructed the rescuers to locate places where most people were buried or trapped and to clean the sludge as soon as possible.Wen also demanded that traffic, power supply and telecommunication in the county should be resumed as soon as possible."And people who have been evacuated should be taken good care of," Wen stressed.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan.
