BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Ministry of Education plan to open an online recruitment service for the first time to mobilize college graduates this year, a move seen as an effort to sharpen the army's high-tech edge.The PLA plans to recruit some 150,000 college graduates this year, according to a statement released after a meeting held Thursday by the PLA General Staff Headquarters and the ministry.Last year, China announced a series of preferential policies to encourage more young people with higher education to serve in the army, including a one-off payment of up to 24,000 yuan (3,500 U.S. dollars) for the student-turned soldiers. The money, paid by the central government, roughly equals the tuition cost of a four-year university education in China.Some 130,000 college graduates applied to join the army in 2009 and more than 100,000 were recruited, statistics from the statement show.Moreover, the age limit has been extended to 24 for those with a bachelor degree. BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities Wednesday launched an emergency response plan to help victims of the rainstorms and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has left at least 30 dead.The China National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated a level IV emergency response plan and dispatched a working team to help guide relief work in the flood-hit zone.Heavy rains began pounding many places in Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.
