For the first time in roughly four months, weekly jobless claims in the U.S. have risen. The Department of Labor’s latest reports shows 1.4 million people filed new jobless claims, compared to 1.3 million people the week prior.“People are overwhelmed by the news. They are overwhelmed when they see that a million extra people just filed for unemployment,” said Sarah Johnston, a job search strategist.Johnston runs the company Briefcase Coach and specializes in helping people find work in this job market.“The good news is my clients and I know from looking at LinkedIn’s update, people are getting jobs,” said Johnston.Finding a job right now, with such high unemployment, is not easy. It is competitive but--as Johnston teaches in a course with LinkedIn-- if you search in the “hidden job market,” you’ll find better success.“The hidden job market is all the jobs that are unadvertised online,” said Johnston.These jobs may be unadvertised because an employer may be planning a promotion or expanding but hasn’t announced that yet. If you can get to know the hiring manager before new jobs post, you have a better chance of topping their list of candidates.“Tip number one is to understand what your options are. You really need to know your target companies, who hires people like you for work that you want to do,” said Johnston.She recommends creating a “target list” of the companies you want to work for and find out who are the hiring managers.Then, move on to tip number two, which is seeing who in your existing network may know or have connections to those managers or someone in that list of companies.“The final tip would be to not be afraid of being proactive in your job search and making contact or reaching out or getting an introduction to a hiring manager at your dream company or companies on your target list,” said Johnston. “It only takes one conversation to change the entire trajectory of your job search.”Johnston’s in-depth course on navigating the hidden job market is available on LinkedIn. Former MLB players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo have been killed in a car crash in Venezuela, according to multiple media reports.  The two were teammates on a winter ball team in Venezuela at the time of the crash on Thursday. Castillo was 37 at the time of his death and finished his career with the Houston Astros. Valbuena, 33, most recently played for the Los Angeles Angels and was a sought after free agent in this MLB offseason.Details on what led up to the crash have not yet been released.   547

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State Senator Chris McDaniel is pre-filing a bill that would replace a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in the state Capitol Rotunda with a statue of Carl Brashear, a Kentucky African American Navy sailor and master diver who died in 2006.In 1970, Brashear became the first African-American master diver in the history of the U.S. Navy, despite having his left leg amputated in 1966. The film "Men of Honor" was based on Brashear's life.McDaniel says he'll call for 0,000 to erect a statue of Brashear. The Jefferson Davis statue would be sent to either the Kentucky Historical Society or Jefferson Davis Park under his bill."For the past decade, politicians of both political parties are getting behind the state's historical commission and encouraged them to take action," McDaniel said. "That is not leadership."Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear believes now is the time to remove the statue."I just want to make the statement that I believe the Jefferson Davis statue is a symbol that divides us," Beshear said in a news conference last week. "Even if there are those who think it's a part of history, there should be a better place to put it in historic context. Right now, seeing so much pain across our state and across our country, can't we at least realize that in so many of our fellow Kentuckians — we talk about compassion in terms of COVID, we ought to have compassion for all pain — can't we understand that at the very least it is so hurtful to them and doesn't that justify it not sitting where it does right now? A record 66 percent of respondents in this year's Gallup poll say they support legalizing cannabis, up from 64 percent last year."I think a lot of consumers are coming out of the shadows, and they just feel more comfortable talking about cannabis, learning about cannabis,” says Trey Fisher.Fisher, with Medicine Man dispensary in Denver, Colorado, says particularly of note in 2018, is the emerging client base of women and the elderly. "The elderly, they're just looking for relief,” explains Fisher. “They're just looking for a product that works, and they don't care about the social stigma anymore."Individual dispensaries are certainly seeing growth, but industry insiders say the pot business as a whole is still being held back."It’s still completely illegal under federal law, and that's sort of putting a damper on the whole industry,” says Raza Lawrence, a cannabis law attorney.Lawrence specializes in helping entrepreneurs obtain cannabis licenses. He says if the U.S. would follow Canada in decriminalizing pot on a national level, the business would explode.  “Once that changes, you're going to see a lot more corporations starting to jump into the fray, and its gonna look a lot more like other types of industries," Lawrence says.Both Lawrence and Fisher say that could happen soon, and they believe the move in Canada could put even more pressure on U.S. lawmakers."I think Canada is gonna really expedite that process a little bit," says Fisher. 1556
